Timbaland Details the Time He Almost Overdosed on OxyContin

When the phrase ‘super producer’ is uttered, not many names come to mind. Names like: RZA, Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, The Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri, and Kanye West are among the high ranks that have earned the title. Today however, we celebrate the birth of one who help to shape the scope of both Hip Hop and R&B in the late 90s and early 2000s. Timothy Zachery Mosley a.k.a. Timbaland was born on this day [March 10] 49 years ago.

Timbaland is responsible in large part for the success of artists like Missy Elliot, Aaliyah and Ginuwine. Timbaland helped shape a Hip Hop culture in his home state of Virginia and through his production and organization of local artists. He has even crossed over into pop, working with acts like Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, to create a sound and culture that helped bridge the pop culture gap to allow for more and more trans-genre collaboration.

Missy Elliott has achieved much in her 30-year career (and still going), including becoming the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. Now the Virginia native can add another historic first in her record books as she’s set to receive the MTV Video Vanguard Award at this year’s VMAs.
Elliott will add a feather to her career cap when the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award is handed over to her at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony. The talented singer, songwriter, and rapper will also perform at the event for the first time since 2003.

“Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,” Bruce Gillmer, Head of Music and Music Talent at Viacom and Co-Brand Head at MTV International said in a press statement. “Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”

Past recipients of the award include Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Kanye West. The Grammy Award-winning artist has been in the game for over three decades and has sold a whopping 30 million records over that time. Adding to her list of accolades, Elliott was the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Missy Elliott is the First Female Hip-Hop Artist to Be Inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame

It’s not even two weeks into 2019 and Missy Elliott is already leading the charge of women breaking barriers in Hip-Hop as this weekend, she received the honor of being the first female Hip-Hop artist to be inducted into the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame. Joining Jay-Z and Jermaine Dupri, Elliott is one of the few rappers to receive an induction into the legendary hall of fame.

According to Songwriters Hall of Fame Chairman Nile Rodgers, “I’m very proud that in my first year as Chairman of the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame that we are recognizing some of the culturally most important songwriters of all time. The 2019 slate of inductees represents diversity and unity across genres and gender, highlighting our dedicated mission to honor music creators who have enriched our lives. These are writers who in their time literally transformed music and helped make what’s happening today possible.”

To qualify for induction into the hall of fame, a songwriter must be a published writer for a minimum of 20 years with a notable catalog of hit songs. Missy Elliott, who has been active in the industry since 1997, has attained “unprecedented success, including U.S. sales in excess of 30 million. Missy’s six studio albums have each been RIAA platinum certified or better, marking her as the only female rapper to achieve that remarkable accomplishment” according to a statement from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Additionally, the induction committee made note of not just her solo success, but also of her numerous collaborations with other legendary artists such as Beyonce, Ciara, and many more as well as her stunning Super Bowl halftime performance in 2015. The committee also praised her work with former First Lady Michelle Obama for her role in the creation of “This Is For My Girls,” an all-star anthem to female empowerment as part of Obama’s Let Girls Learn initiative.

The Hall of Fame’s 50th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner will take place on June 13 in New York City.
