Tech Review: Xbox’s Wireless Headset Delivers A Solid Experience Worthy of Its $99 Price Tag

Xbox Wireless Headset Review

The gaming headset market is an extremely crowded one, with tons of options for gamers to choose from. Xbox has decided to throw its name into the hat with its own premium headset that delivers a solid user experience.

Microsoft’s $99 headset is a sleek yet simple offering that takes its cues from the next-gen console the Xbox Series X while working with other consoles like the Xbox Series S, older Xbox One models, plus Windows PC and comes with features that make them stand out among the crowded field of headsets from other companies like HyperX, Turtle Beach and Sony.

Simply Sleek

Xbox Wireless Headset Review

Immediately you will notice the very sleek design once you take the headset out of the box. Like the Xbox Series X, the headset has a matte finish that, unfortunately, is very prone to collecting fingerprints. But, the headset is very attractive with nice details like the Xbox logo on the right earcup and the signature neon green rings around each earcup that definitely lets you know this is an Xbox peripheral.

One feature that I absolutely loved is the fact you can adjust the volume and game/voice balance by simply turning the spinning dials located on each ear. The right ear handles the headset’s master volume, while the left ear lets you fine-tune the voice chat and game balance. You can easily restore it to a neutral setting by turning the dial to the middle. A click will let you know that has been achieved.

Xbox Wireless Headset Review

Unlike many other wireless headsets, Xbox decided the fewer buttons, the better, and on this matter, we agree. There is one long green power button that doubles as the pairing button located on the left earcup. On the right earcup, users will find the single USB-C port to charge the headset.

Xbox Wireless Headset Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / Xbox Wireless Headset

Microsoft boasts that you can get about 15 hours of gameplay out of the headset, and for the most part, that is accurate. If you happen to run out of juice during a gaming session, you can plug the headset in for about 30 minutes, and that will give you about four hours of use.

You can also link multiple devices to the Xbox Wireless Headset at one time, so basically, you can take a call while playing at the same time. One convenient but also annoying feature is the fact Xbox Series X or whatever console the headset is connected to will turn on when the power button is pressed. Something to pay attention to when you want to use the headset to listen to music or take a Zoom call.

As for comfort, the Xbox Wireless headset is lightweight and very comfortable to wear but will have to “broken in” first. The earpads feature soft memory foam covered in faux leather with similar padding underneath the headband to ensure a comfortable fit during long gameplay sessions.

Mic Check 1, 2

Xbox Wireless Headset Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / Xbox Wireless Headset

The microphone is long and narrow plus can be adjusted but not removed. It can be muted via a single button located underneath it. A LED indicator is located on the tip of the mic that gives you an indication that the mic is muted or not. If the light is on, your mic is hot. When the light is off, the mic is not in use. There is a smart feature called “auto-mute” that is supposed to silence your mic when you’re not talking. While it does “work” I highly recommend just pressing the mute button just to be safe.

Xbox Wireless Headset Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / Xbox Wireless Headset

When it comes to performance, the Xbox Wireless Headset delivers quality voice chat when used on Xbox. Over PC, it’s okay, but there is room for improvement. We recommend sticking with HyperX’s headsets when it comes to that department.

Super Bass

Xbox Wireless Headset Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / Xbox Wireless Headset

When it comes to sound, the Xbox Wireless Headset will not have you asking where the bass is? Because it’s present and accounted for. While playing games like Doom Eternal, Outriders, the explosions and gunfire sounded very heavy, and while the rock-heavy soundtrack from Doom Eternal hits pretty hard. While playing MLB The Show 21, how well voice comes through on the headset, the play-by-play chatter, and background crowd noise is crystal clear.

If that is something you’re not feeling, you can adjust it via the Xbox Accessories app. The Xbox Wireless Headset also works with Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone:X to enhance your sound experience. Windows Sonic is built-in, while Dolby Atmos and DTS Headphone:X require a separate subscription purchase through the Xbox or Windows store.

Final Verdict

Xbox Wireless Headset Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / Xbox Wireless Headset

While they are not on the same level as Sony’s Pulse 3D Wireless Headset, which gives gamers a next-gen experience in the sound department, Xbox’s wireless headset is definitely a solid pickup for $99. You get a bunch of premium features without having to break the bank as you normally would have to for a good wireless gaming headset.  There is still room for improvement, but it’s nothing a few software updates can’t correct.

Like the Xbox Series X, the Xbox Wireless Headset is also sold out everywhere, so keep checking retailers for restocks.

HHW Tech Review: Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Pro Has One New Feature That Puts It In A Class By Itself

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz83

I loved Samsung’s Galaxy Buds+ and appreciated the follow-up Galaxy Buds Live. Now the company is kicking off the new year with the even more impressive Galaxy Buds Pro.

Samsung’s clear answer to Apple’s AirPods Pro has arrived and quickly has become one of the items I HAVE TO CARRY WITH ME when I hit these socially distant streets.

Design & Quality

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz83

I love two things about Samsung, the company listens to its customers and constantly learns from its previous models and applies that to new designs. That continues to be the case with Galaxy Buds Pro, with  Samsung deciding to take design aspects from both the Galaxy Buds+ and Galaxy Buds Live to bring the Galaxy Buds Pro to fruition.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz83 (Pictures left-right, Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Buds Pro, and Galaxy Buds+)

The Galaxy Buds Pro flawlessly combines the in-ear design with silicone tips that Galaxy Buds+ wearers loved with the Galaxy Buds Live open-air design, which compliments the matte and glossy finish. The buds’ shell has also been revamped. Samsung states the reasoning behind this decision is to “reduce the contact area between your ear and the buds, improving comfort and minimizing any clogged-up feeling.” The Galaxy Buds Pro also no longer sticks out from your ear as much while being worn.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz83

I am glad Samsung decided not to bring back the Galaxy Buds+’s wingtips. There were complaints that some customers experienced discomfort after extended wearing, and I can vouch for that issue. The Galaxy Buds Pro instead features three silicone tips that come in different sizes that are not as long as previous designs that allow for a much more discreet look while wearing them. A small section of mesh acts as a windshield while making voice calls and covers one of the three built-in microphones.

I appreciated the Galaxy Buds Pro’s secure fit you get after just a simple twist of the buds into your ear. The buds feel totally stable when in-ear and never give you a clogged feeling even after hours of use. The Galaxy Buds Pro also has an IPX7 rating for water and sweat resistance. So if you sweat like Patrick Ewing in the fourth quarter of a Knicks game, you don’t have to worry about your Galaxy Buds Pro becoming a victim of your perspiration.

New Features, Noise Canceling, Microphone & Sound Quality

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz83

A better fit isn’t the only thing the Galaxy Buds Pro is giving wearers. There are really some pretty amazing features as well. The Galaxy Buds Pro has two-way speakers in each earbud, an 11-millimeter woofer, and a 6.5mm tweeter, which is bigger than what the Galaxy Buds+ offered but smaller than the Galaxy Bud Live’s single 12mm driver. That, of course, was done on purpose to deliver “the most comprehensive sound in the Galaxy Buds line yet.” I must say Samsung does deliver on that.

The Galaxy Buds Pro delivers a crisp sound experience that can be adjusted through the Wearables app. I love to use the dynamic equalizer setting, which delivers richer bass and brings more life to the songs in your playlist. The active noise cancellation is much improved in the Galaxy Buds Pro. It does a great job in tuning out the noise around you, easily putting the buds in discussion with Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds, Sony’s WF-1000XM3 earbuds, and the AirPods Pro in that department.

But what separates the Galaxy Buds Pro from those other devices is its new “voice detect” feature. Basically, the buds will automatically lower your music and switch to ANC (active noise canceling) mode when it detects your voice. With the help of a “voice pickup unit,” the buds sense your jaw movement letting the buds know that it’s you talking and not someone else nearby. It’s honestly the best feature of the Galaxy Buds Live, and honestly, I can’t see myself using any other wireless buds or headphones that don’t have this feature.

For voice calls, the Galaxy Buds Pro uses a three-microphone system in tandem with beamforming to help isolate the wearer’s voice from the environment. The Buds Pro’s new lower-profile design and the mesh covering the chamber help reduce wind noise while on a phone call outside. The clarity for voice calls has also been improved and to complete the hands-free experience. I have never been a big fan of Samsung’s voice assistant but have warmed up to it.

Battery Life

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz83

Battery life is the only department where the Galaxy Buds Pro comes up just a bit short compared to previous models. To be such an exceptional wearable device, the Galaxy Buds Pro’s battery life is just average, giving you 5-hours of playback with ANC activated and just eight with it off. With the charging case, you max out at 18 hours, and with ANC deactivated, 28 putting it on par with every other pair of wireless buds out. But the Galaxy Buds Pro falls short of the 11 hours of playback that the Galaxy Buds+ gave wearers.

Still, the Galaxy Buds Pro’s 61mAh battery should be sufficient enough to help you make it through a day.

Another new feature the Galaxy Buds Pro now have is automatically switching between your Samsung devices. Apple AirPods Pro users were already enjoying this feature. It’s a welcomed late addition and will allow you to switch the Galaxy Buds Pro between your Galaxy phone or tablet. Sadly it won’t work it Samsung’s laptops, but that’s an issue that could be addressed with a software update.

Final Verdict

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro Review

Source: Samsung / Galaxy Buds Pro

Despite average battery life and the fact the buds only can be fully taken advantage of on a Samsung Galaxy device, the Galaxy Buds Pro is, in my opinion, the best wearables out right now. For $199.99, you are getting your bang for your buck with features like “voice detect,” exceptional active noise cancellation, great sound thanks to Samsung’s long partnership with AKG, and an attractive pair of buds that don’t stick out like Apple’s AirPods when in-ear.

I have been a big fan of Samsung’s wireless buds, and they continue to improve on the design with each new model. I don’t know how the Korean tech giant can improve on Galaxy Buds Pro when it’s time to unveil a new pair of wireless buds, but that’s a bridge I’m sure the company is fully capable of crossing when it gets there.

The Galaxy Buds Pro is available right now in three colors Phantom Black and Phantom Silver, and Phantom Violet, and costs $199. If you preordered Samsung’s new flagship new Galaxy S21 model, you could get a pair for free as a preorder bonus that you will surely appreciate.

HHW Tech Review: Google’s Nest Audio Is The Best Midsize Speaker On The Market For Only $99

HHW Tech Review: Google Nest Audio

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

There are plenty of smart speaker options on the market to choose from right now. Google hopes it’s Nest Audio will be the one that will grab your attention and help smarten up your homes.

Does Size Matter?

Amazon, Sonos, Apple, and Google all offer consumers wireless speakers in small, midsize, and large options that help determine where you will place them in your house. Google aims to give you a great midsize option with the Nest Audio, the replacement to the 2016 Google Home that could work in any room situation. The Nest Audio’s rather strange pillow-like shape doesn’t throw off the decor of whatever room it’s placed in, be it the living room, bedroom, or kitchen, thanks to its mesh design that does come in an assortment of color options.

Even when it’s not paired with another speaker, the Nest Audio still manages to deliver superb sound quality to fill whatever room it is in. Using just a mono speaker setup (75 mm woofer and 19 mm tweeter), the Nest Audio manages to compete with the likes of Amazon’s new Echo and will have you jamming out while doing whatever tasks at the time.

Don’t Let Its Simple Design Fool You.

Looking at the Google Nest audio, its design doesn’t blow you away due to Google keeping things very simple aesthetically wise. Outside of the four hidden LED lights that appear when you wake the speaker or adjust the volume, it’s nothing to marvel at. What matters is what’s on the inside of the smart speaker that helps it stand out from the rest.

The Nest Audio has 3 far-field microphones that do an excellent job at picking up my voice accurately when issuing commands like inquiring about the weather or telling it to play a specific song via YouTube Music or Spotify. I noticed I had to shout when trying to talk over the music playing at the time. I was also reminded that I still have Issa Rae as my voice assistant.

On the top of the Nest Audio are hidden touch controls that allow you to lower or raise the volume or start and stop songs. The touch controls are a tad bit sensitive, but you probably won’t use them that much. If you’re one of those people worried about your speaker secretly listening to you, Google added a simple switch on that easily mutes the mic.

Final Verdict

For only $99, I believe Google has the best midsize smart speaker out right now with the Nest Audio. It’s easy to set up and use and pair with other smart devices around your home. If you’re in the market for a smart speaker or looking for that perfect Christmas present, you can’t go wrong with Google’s Nest Audio.

You can head here to pick one up right now and even save $30 when you purchase a second Nest Audio via Google.

HHW Tech Review: Vissles 3-In-1 Wireless Charging Mat, A Decent Fill-In For The Canceled AirPower Charging Mat

Vissles Wireless Charger

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

Apple fans were very disappointed when it was announced the AirPower charging mat was canceled. Stuck in limbo, Vissles has stepped up to the plate with its 3-in-1 wireless charging mat.

Design

Vissles Wireless Charger

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

Right out the box, you will notice that the device is very light, nothing extraordinarily fancy, and entirely made of plastic. But that don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s poorly made device. The hole which lights up when your phone is placed on the mat is where your Apple Watch charger will go. I do not own Apple’s smartwatch, so I wasn’t able to utilize it. On the back of the device is a  USB-C power port.

If you are an Apple Watch owner installation of the charger is very easy. Included with the charging mat is an opening tool that will help you open the device without damaging it. Once opened, you just run the Apple Watch’s cable through it and connect with the USB port located inside. You have to make sure the charging cable is 1m for a proper fit.

Vissles Wireless Charger

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

Also included is a wireless lightning plug that works with your AirPods and magnetically attaches to the charging mat.

Performance

Vissles Wireless Charger

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

As far as charging your devices, to take advantage of fast wireless charging, you need to plug it into a power strip or electrical outlet to get the device’s full output. The charging mat not only works with Apple devices, but other QI enabled wireless charging devices. Pictured above, my Samsung  S20+ works perfectly fine with the charging mat. I was disappointed to see that my Galaxy Fit smartwatch does not work with the device, though.

Final Verdict

Vissles Wireless Charger

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

Costing at $45, I wasn’t blown away with the Vissles 3-in-1 Wireless charger. My biggest complaints are definitely the fact the Apple Watch charger is not built-in and the fact my Samsung Galaxy Fit watch did not work with the charging mat. Outside of those issues, the Vissles 3-in-1 Wireless Charger is a decent purchase for someone looking for a charging mat that has the “Apple look” and reliably charges your device when you use it.

If you are interested in buying one, you can head here and use code VISSLES to get 20% off your purchase.

HHW Gaming Review: ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ Campaign Remastered Is A Love Letter To COD’s Single-Player Mode

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered

Source: Activision / Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered

Call of Duty fans was surprised to hear that Activision was dropping a remastered version of 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s campaign. But is it worth taking your attention away from Modern Warfare and Warzone’s multiplayer fun?

Personally, I fell in love with the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise playing the game’s campaigns before I got into the insanely-popular multiplayer mode. The once well-written stories stopped slapping for me honestly after Modern Warfare 3, which fans to this day still despise.

When the news of Modern Warfare 2’s campaign being remastered was officially announced, I jumped for joy because the game’s campaign is high on my list as a favorite. Immediately when I jumped into the game, I was very impressed with the job Beenox did with the game on the technical side. The game looks absolutely stunning in 4K on PS Pro as a timed PlayStation exclusive, but at the same time, some of the stages do feel a bit dated.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered

Source: Activision / Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered.

My opinion is a tad bit biased being that I played the original Modern Warfare 2, so if this is your first time, you might be more blown away than me playing the game.

But for the most part, Beenox has managed to resurrect the strengths that made Modern Warfare 2’s campaign a fan-favorite among COD players while enhancing other aspects of the game. There was definitely a lot of oh sh*t moments as if I was playing the game when it first launched. Whether it was being reminded that iconic Keith David and Lance Henrikson lent their voices to the game or the plethora of action-packed moments. Thrilling events like battling out the favelas of Brazil, the snowmobile escape, pushing back invading Russians in US suburban neighborhoods will have you on the edge of your seat.

One of my favorite MW2 moments is holding off waves of Russian solders using a drone strikes from the roof of a fast-food restaurant; it was a welcomed trip down memory lane.

I was also reminded how I loved the multiple breach moments where you bust into a room, and everything slows down, allowing to stylish take down bad guys.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered

Source: Activision / Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered

It was still shocking to see Washington DC. in shambles as you try to take back the capital while taking on Russian invaders inside The White House.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered

Source: Activision / Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered.

I was pleased to see that the infamous “No Russian” mission was brought back in its entirety. In it, you are sent on an undercover mission where you are tasked to take out a terrorist act. If you don’t have the stomach to shoot innocent civilians, you don’t have the pull the trigger. The mission does get uneasy when you have to start shooting back at police officers who are trying to stop you. Like the 2009 game, if you do not care to play the mission, you can choose to skip it.

Final Verdict:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is nothing but a love letter to what made the franchise great, its single-player campaign. 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot also managed to recapture that once missing energy. This game successfully reminded me why the 4-6 hour campaign is top 3 in the game’s long history. If you never got a chance to play MW2’s campaign mode, now is your chance for only $19.99.

If you have been dying to replay Modern Warfare 2’s single-player campaign, then this game will suit you very well.

HHW Tech Review: Samsung’s Galaxy Buds+ Builds On What Was Great In The Previous Model

Samsung Galaxy Buds+

Source: Nagina Lane / @PhotosByNae

Samsung’s first iteration of the Galaxy Buds was easily my favorite truly wireless accessories when they arrived. So the million-dollar question, of course, is, could the company deliver a better product with the  Galaxy Buds+? The answer is an emphatic yes.

Design and Quality

Galaxy Buds+

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

On the design front, Samsung didn’t change anything. In fact, if you held both models in your hands without the cases, you wouldn’t be able to tell them apart. Where they differ slightly is the charging case thanks to a glossier finish, which doesn’t make holding the case a problem but does leave tons of fingerprints if you want to consider that an issue.

Galaxy Buds+

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

As for the buds, they are still made from plastic, which could give them a “cheap” feel, but the Galaxy Buds+ are designed that way for a reason. The all-plastic design help the Galaxy Buds+ feel lightweight, comfortable, and, most importantly, affordable. Included with the Galaxy Buds+ are pre-installed medium ear and wing-tips that else help provide a nice tight seal when you wear them.

Samsung Galaxy Buds+

Source: Nagina Lane / @PhotosByNae

There are also three extra pairs allow users to find the right fit, which will help them provide the best sound from the buds as possible.

New Features, Sound & Microphone Quality

Galaxy Buds+

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

Where the Galaxy Buds+ differs from its predecessor is underneath the hood thanks to a new dual-driver system with each earbud having its own tweeter and woofer. AKG fine-tunes the sound system in the earbuds and helps delivers great crystal clear sound with minimal distortion.

Another great new feature the Galaxy Buds+ have is Spotify integration. To use it, you have to download the Galaxy Wearables app and integrate your Spotify account with it. Once you have done that, you can reassign the touch gesture to receive recommended songs. The feature does not work on iOS, unfortunately.

The Galaxy Buds+ also feature a new three-microphone array system. There are now two external mics and one internal microphone that works together to provide clearer voice transmission. The two external mics zero in on your voice while blocking out ambient noise. During my test, I was quite pleased with the results and was told my voice was crystal clear.

Pairing the buds with your Galaxy smartphone is easier than ever. If your device is running Android 7.1.1 or later with the latest version of the SmartThings app installed, you will be greeted with a pop-up window that will guide you through the rapid pairing. If you don’t have either, you can still pair the buds by just going straight to the Bluetooth menu and “Galaxy Buds+.”

As far as connection strength, the buds utilize its Bluetooth 5.0 firmware very well and provide users with a 10-meter wireless range with reliable connection strength, whether you’re using an iPhone or Android device.

Battery Life

Samsung Unpacked 2020

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz

When it comes to battery life, the Galaxy Buds+  are king in this department. Most true wireless earbuds are the jig when it comes to lasting all day, Samsung’s devices walk it like they talk it. The Buds+ boast an impressive 12 hours of battery life, but if you really clock them 11 hours 44 minutes.

When they do run out of juice, you can throw in the charging case and get a quick 1-hour charge just off a 3-minute charge. Now you only get one full charge off the case, which is a bummer, but since its Qi-certified, you can utilize the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s wireless power share or other wireless charging methods.

Verdict

Samsung once again delivers with Buds+ and builds off what made its predecessor great. For $149, the Galaxy Buds+ are a steal due to what they offer users. From Spotify integration, the new mic array system, and the fantastic battery life, these are truly the best set of wireless earbuds on the market. So, if you’re looking to upgrade your Galaxy Buds are or just need a new pair of wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Buds+ are a perfect choice.

HHW Tech Review: Samsung Makes A Strong Statement With The Galaxy S10 Plus

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus

Source: MoNae Mayweather / Hip-Hop Wired

Samsung’s new lineup of Galaxy smartphones are finally launching, and Hip-Hop Wired got the chance to take the S10 Plus for a test run. I walked away thoroughly impressed with the company’s latest premium flagship phone and its new features.

The Galaxy S10 when it officially launches March 8 will come in three offerings the entry-level S10e starting at $749, the mainstream model S10 for $899 and the premium offering S10 Plus for $999. Being an iPhone user for the past 8 years using a Galaxy phone was quite weird, but I must admit I found myself opting to use the S10 Plus more than 8 Plus thanks to all of its awesome tweaks. So let’s break down what makes the phone the best Android phone on the market.

PROS

The Screen

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus

Source: MoNae Mayweather / Hip-Hop Wired: Galaxy S9 Plus on the left, Galaxy S10 Plus on the right

Immediately when you pick up the S10 Plus, the first thing you will notice is its remarkable screen to body ratio. The phone features a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display which is the biggest screen ever on Samsung device. The handset now has a 93.1% screen ratio which allowed the tech giant to squeeze in more pixels and at the same time reducing the bezel.

Samsung’s new Infinity-O display is absolutely beautiful allowing you to switch between a natural or vivid look, but you can’t go wrong with either choice. The Galaxy S10 Plus’ screen is highly detailed thanks to a 1440 x 3040 QHD+ resolution alongside its tall 19:9 aspect ratio providing an impressive 526ppi pixel density. When you first power on the phone the screen’s resolution is set to Full HD+ (2280 x 1080) by default but still provides clear and detailed pictures and text and can run 4K movies or graphics and while conserving battery life. If you really want to bring out the details in your Netflix movies or gaming, you can bump it up WQHD+ (30340 x 1440).

The Galaxy S10 Plus is also the first phone alongside the S10 to have HDR10+ support that allows for fantastic contrast and color which also enhance those movies or videos, or you watch your phone.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus

Source: Bernard Smalls / Hip-Hop Wired

Owners will also notice that the annoying notch where the front-facing camera would be placed and is now replaced with a laser-cut hole in the top right corner of the phone that houses the phones TWO front cameras. If you are worried, it will be an eye-sore I am happy to report you won’t even notice it at all despite being bigger than some single camera notches. One thing I love about is that it allows for more notification icons across the top of the screen and it while watching movies it completely disappears thanks to a black bar being applied.

The Cameras

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus

Source: MoNae Mayweather / Hip-Hop Wired Galaxy S9 Plus on the left, Galaxy S10 Plus on the right

Except for the phone’s battery, the cameras are the most essential feature now and days and Samsung has always delivered in that department and on the S10 Plus they have outdone themselves. The new Pro-Grade triple camera system in the back and the dual front-facing camera will impress the avid smartphone photographer in you.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus

Source: Bernard Smalls / Hip-Hop Wired: Photo taken using Galaxy S10 Plus’ 12MP lens

The Pro-Grade triple-lens rear camera system includes a 12MP conventional lens, a 12MP optically zoomed telephoto lens and the new 16MP ultra-wide lens that allows you get even more subjects in your shot and take stunning landscape shots. Scene Optimizer returns and is much smarter and can recognize 10 new categories which help the camera adjust the settings like brightening up the scene. Shot Suggestions also will you give you hints suggesting different angles to fix photos thanks to the phones neural processing unit. When using it, I found it very helpful thanks to an on-screen reticule that will help you center your shot and flash “best shot” once the settings are perfect.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus

Live Focus (Samsungs depth effect feature) is back and better than ever thanks to the addition of three different blurring tools. Alongside the standard background blur effect, there is now Spin, and Zoom that adds different blur effects to your photo and a final option called color point that keeps the desired subject in color while turning the background black and white. The amount of blur can be easily adjusted after you take the picture with an on-screen slider.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / Hip-Hop Wired

The dual front-facing features two cameras, a 10MP and an 8MP camera that allows Live Focus for your selfies. You can also apply the same new depth effect options as mentioned above. The only drawback is the photos taken with the front cameras in low light situations look soft-looking and due to the camera software trying to reduce camera noise. But to be fair Samsung’s phones are not the only ones with that issue.

Video also looks really good as well thanks to the camera being able to record in HDR10+ and now offering Digital Video Stabilization on the rear camera system which allows for smooth action footage even though your moving. Samsung hopes this could give GoPro a run for its money with this latest upgrade.

Battery Life and Wireless Power Share

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus Review

Source: Bernard Smalls / Hip-Hop Wired

Under the hood the S10 Plus sports a big 4,100mAh all-day intelligent battery and for the most part that is the case with moderate use. My work day consists of me being on my phone a good portion of the day, so that means Twitter, Instagram, checking Gmail and streaming music on Tidal and my phone held a decent charge by the time I got home and was at 45%.

I am sure if your day includes movie streaming, increasing the phones brightness, heavy camera usage and bumping the phone’s graphics up to WQHD+ (30340 x 1440) could put even more strain on the phone’s battery. I did notice that the phone did optimize itself based on how I used significantly increasing the battery time. There are also Bixby Routines that can also help save battery life as well.

One of my favorite features on the phone is Wireless Power Share that turns the phone basically into a charging mat. While Apple is still playing catch up in this department, Samsung is clearly ahead of the curve, While the S10 Plus is not the first smartphone to have this tool see the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, its the most readily available phone to feature the tech. I put it to the test on a friends iPhone, and it worked seemingly and it the best part is it stopped charging the phone when it hit 30% battery life.

Wireless Power Share bridges the divide between Apple and Samsung phones for the sake of sharing juice if there isn’t a power outlet in sight.

Fingerprint Sensor

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus

Last but not least, the in-screen ultrasonic fingerprint reader works so smoothly, and it’s cool. Samsung wised up and moved the scanner from the back of the phone and placing it in the screen. Once you register your fingerprint, you can tap the screen and an on-screen image of a print that will show you where to place your finger.

Now you may have some issues at first unlocking the phone through the scanner but because you have to place your finger firmly over the scanner for it to work. Once you figure that it will come naturally to you in no time. I definitely seeing Samsung improving the in-screen reader’s accuracy with more updates over-time.

The Bixby button not so conveniently located to volume button is annoying at times especially when trying to raise or lower the volume. You won’t really need to use it because you can operate Bixby with your voice. Speaking with Michael Yaeger a member of Samsung’s Products team he did reveal that an update is coming soon that will allow users to reassign the Bixby button which is a relief.

If you’re not a season Samsung Galaxy owner and are transitioning from the iPhone to the S10 Plus, the phone can feel very weird in your hands. I noticed that I would mistakenly pull out the Apps edge menu while scrolling or watching a video or sometimes while typing I would accidentally hit the wrong keys or close the screen. As time went along and I got used to holding the phone, it happened less and less, but Galaxy newbies might find it troublesome.

FINAL VERDICT

Despite being the most expensive model until the upcoming 5G model and Galaxy Fold drops, it still offers you so many features like super fast performance, an easy to use interface plus a free pair of wireless earbuds all while still being cheaper than Apple’s current premium smartphone model. The S10 Plus is the best Android phone on the market and worth every penny and if you are a fan of the Korean tech giants smartphones, you will be delighted with the phone.

While it might be a lost cause trying to lure Apple fans away from the iPhone the S10 Plus makes a pretty good case as to why they should give the phone a try. The lure of incredible battery life, great cameras, and wireless charging are quite enticing, hell it has this iPhone owner thinking of ditching my 8 Plus altogether because it’s that impressive. Samsung’s S10 Plus is definitely up there with Google’s Pixel 3 and owners will be quite pleased once they get the smartphone in their hands.

HHW Tech Review: Audeara A-01 Wireless Headphones Deliver A Tailored Listening Experience Just For You

Audeara A-01 Headphones Review

Source: MoNae Mayweather / iOne Digital

A great pair of headphones come with many features to give users the best sound experience ever. But what if they could supply you with a unique sound experience perfectly tailored to your exact hearing capabilities? That’s precisely what Audeara’s A-01 headphones aim to do.

The brand is the brainchild of two Australian doctors Dr. James Fielding and Dr. Chris Jeffery who wanted make medical-grade audiograms more accessible to those suffering from hearing loss. They started Audeara in 2014 and launched a Kickstarter campaign last year raising $100,000, which led to them creating the A-01 headphones. The company was kind enough to send over a pair for me to experience and try out on the streets of NYC.

PROS

Tailored Sound

Straight out the box, the sound quality isn’t excellent, and that is on purpose and easily fixed. The headphones main function is activated through its companion app. Once booted up and paired, you will be allowed to create profiles tailored to your hearing. The app has three hearing exams: a Standard test that only takes 3 minutes, High Detail that takes 5 minutes and Ultimate Precision that takes 10 minutes.

If you want to get the full experience out of the headphones, I highly suggest you take the time to complete the Ultimate Precision test. Utilizing a series of tones set at different frequencies the exam will determine your hearing threshold for each ear. The more extended test will produce more accurate results and once completed the app will then upload the results to headphones via Bluetooth. The app will give you the option of applying your profile in different percentages ranging from 0% -100%.

No experience is the same, and the hearing your songs after completing the test with the sound profile applied is impressive. If you are one of those people who like their headphones to be extremely loud, then the A-01’s are not for you. These headphones were designed to preserve your hearing while giving you a premium listening experience at the same time.

Design

You won’t be blown away by the headphones plain matte black look, at first, the A-01’s look like any generic pair of headphones if it wasn’t for the logo on the side. But that aside, the Audeara A-01’s are very lightweight and sturdy and fit very comfortably. There are large L and R’s emblazoned on the inside of the cups rather than the usual small markings on headphones to let you differentiate left from right which is vital when taking your hearing test on the app.

CONS

Button Layout

The buttons on the A-01’s are painfully small leading to you possibly pressing the wrong the one when trying to activate the headphones features or adjust the volume. Switching on ANC (automatic noise control) can be a hassle but fortunately, the sound quality is so good you will rarely need to switch on the feature at all. I would like to see them possibly adding the ability to control the noise control feature through the app to alleviate that issue.

Battery Life

Audeara A-01 Headphones

Source: MoNae Mayweather / iOne Digital

Audeara boasts the A-01’s will give users up to 65 hours of listening time in flight mode with the line in with ANC activated. 35 hours in regular mode with ANC on and the Audeara effect and 45 hours in Eco Mode with Bluetooth and Audeara effect activated.

Sadly in my experience that wasn’t the case, I got a decent 20 hours with the ANC not activated cause again it’s really not necessary saving you some battery life.

Final Verdict

For what it’s worth Audeara literally delivered prescription headphones for the most part. The A-01’s could work wonders for someone who has hearing issues to experience music like they never could before with other headphones. This is just a first step for the company and it made some impressive strides with its first model. I would like to see more capabilities with the app as mentioned above like being able to control the automatic noise control feature instead of using the button and auto power off function like Samsung’s AKG headphones would help battery life.

Initially, $380 now listed at $249 the Audera A-01’s are very solid and worth a try if you’re looking for a pair of Bluetooth wireless headphones outside of Beats By Dre, Sony and Bose. If you’re not impressed with the product, the company does offer a 60-day guarantee which is a great cushion.

Audeara is definitely onto something here with A-01’s, and I am definitely intrigued to see what the company comes up with in the future with its next model.

HHW Tech Review: Cotodama Lyric Speaker Canvas

Cotodama Lyric Speaker Canvas

Source: Bernard Smalls / Hip-Hop Wired

I’ve seen and used many wireless speakers but nothing quite like the Cotodama Lyric Speaker Canvas. Sound quality isn’t what sets this speaker apart from the rest, it’s the devices ability to display the lyrics from songs you’re listening to on the front display.

COTODAMA Joins Abbey Road Red + Announces Lyric Speaker Canvas

Source: COTODAMA

When I was first presented with the opportunity to get a hands-on review, I said yes immediately. When it finally arrived I didn’t expect the speaker to be as big it was I must admit. The device is about 19″ wide, 15 3/4″ high, and 4 3/4″ deep, it’s a bit heavy weighing about 11 pounds so you definitely should place it somewhere very sturdy. You definitely don’t want this bad boy dropping for one particular reason I will get to later in the review.

PROS

Lyric Sync Technology

The speaker’s ability to display lyrics is its most significant and most fantastic feature. Cotodama wants users of their products to believe in the power of lyrics, and this Lyric Speaker Canvas is a great tool to help accomplish that goal. The Japanese company’s “Lyric Sync Technology” works flawlessly. I really wanted to see if it could seamlessly switch up languages and tested it by playing Cardi B’s hit single “I Like It” and it I was very impressed.

Sound

Thanks to Japanese creative agency, Tom’s lab, the Canvas Lyric Speaker delivers impressive room-filling sound. Vocals come in very crisp, so the speaker is definitely not just something to look at.

Design and Setup

The Lyric Speaker Canvas is designed to look like two record sleeves just casually sitting on your shelve or mantle. Its a simple look for a device that injects life into your home through music both visually and sonically. When people come into your apartment or house and see the lyrics flashing across I guarantee they will be amazed.

As far as setup, the speaker can be easily set over your Wi-Fi connection using either via iOS AirPlay, or Google Cast on Android. You can link the speaker to Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music, AWA, Google Play, and Utapass.

CONS

Price

I don’t consider this much of setback because the speaker is impressive. Like its $4500 predecessor, the Lyric Speaker Canvas is expensive and will cost you $1700. But for a fantastic piece of technology that is hand designed and considered a functional high-art concept to decorate your home with I definitely understand the price.  I definitely would like to see Cotodama somehow make a much more affordable model because I honestly feel everyone should be able to experience it or at least something close.

Slight Delay

Depending the on the speed of the song, I did notice there was a slight delay with the speaker trying to keep up and displaying the lyrics. It eventually caught up, but it can be noticeable at times.

Missing Lyrics

Cotodama does have an impressive library of songs in its database that will display the lyrics when you play them. But there are still some songs that will not show lyrics. You can submit the songs yourself, and it does seem they work pretty quickly to get them into the system. For example, Meek Mill’s song “What’s Free” was not available upon its release but about 2 weeks later when I played it the lyrics for the record was showing.

Final Verdict

The Cotodama Lyric Speaker Canvas is a piece of technology you will never see yourself getting bored with. It gives listeners a new way to experience the music they love and visually observing the lyrics from your favorite Jay-Z or Biggie record flash across the screen in different variations never gets old. If you have the coins to spare it would be a purchase you wouldn’t regret. For more information on Cotodama’s products, you can head to the website.
