On this date last year, 46-year-old George Floyd was being arrested after being accused of using counterfeit money when he was murdered by former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin, who is currently serving time in prison for Floyd’s death. Three other officers, Tao Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane will be going to trial together on March 7, 2022, to face their charges in relation to Floyd’s death.

Even within the Hip Hop community, it is hardly known that George, a Houston native, was one of the founding members of the late DJ Screw’s Screwed Up Click, a Hip Hop collective of emcees who joined the pioneering DJ in creating the “chopped and screwed” sound. H-Town natives that have seen notoriety for their music including Trae Tha Truth, Lil Flip, Lil Keke, Fat Pat, UGK, Devin The Dude are all Screwed Up Click members and affiliates. Big Floyd became a part of this collective in 1994 and was recognized as a local freestyle hero.

Chris Ward, a mainstay in the SUC, spoke about Big Floyd to Pitchfork, saying, “Big Floyd was already a Southside legend in Houston when I met him, because of the Screwed Up Click. DJ Screw was the radio for the city. Big Floyd was already on tapes, and already cool with the guys, and cool with DJ Screw.”

Floyd’s murder set off a tidal wave of international protests against police brutality and forced legislators to create bills for police reform including the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020.

Even though George Floyd’s family received a $27 million settlement from the City of Minneapolis, the fight for justice against police brutality continues as Black and Brown people are injured and killed by the people who are sworn to serve and protect them.

Paul Wall Recalls Meeting George Floyd During Screwed Up Click Days, Talks Raising Biracial Children

Paul Wall joined forces with Red Bull Music Studios for the release of his Subculture album.

The 11-track project is accompanied by a 14-minute vlog that shows the intimate, BTS process of the collection.

“A lot of the times in my recording sessions, I’m either solo or people are just there for the vibe,” says Paul in the video below. “There usually aren’t a lot of professionals around to bounce ideas off of, so it’s been a great experience creating with y’all.”

In an interview with Two Bees TV, the Houston rapper explained the energy on the frontlines of the Black Lives Matter protests that he attended. “It was a combination of a lot of energy. But I think the main energy is fed up. People are fed up with being lied to. Fed up with being mistreated and put aside.”

George Floyd was one of the focal points of the demonstration, and he also was affiliated to DJ Screw’s iconic, Screwed Up Click. Paul recalls having “the privilege and the blessing to meet him on a few different occasions. Always a good dude, big dude. You know, him being from the screwed up clique… anybody period who came out of the screwed up clique, we hold them to a higher level of love and admiration.”

Paul continued, “with him passing it was something we all took hard. Him being from Houston for 1, but him coming out of that screwed up clique … It just makes him as an individual all more relatable to all of us in Houston. Although I got to see him a few times, meet him a few times, and got to take pictures with him a few times, it was something we all felt when he passed on so tragically.”

Although Paul Wall is privileged because of the color of his skin, he still experienced police brutality and has to prepare his biracial children to live in a world that doesn’t love them.

“With my kids, I try to be open and honest about it. Especially Being that my son is 14 and he’s my size. so if out and about he’s not looking like a kid, he’s looking a grown man. And he been looking like that. And I have to think about that when I think about Tamir Rice and these other young men that were killed.”

The late DJ Screw contributed an enduring wrinkle in the Hip-Hop ecosystem with the creation of the “chopped and screwed” style. Now, a new series depicting the Houston, Texas legend’s life and legacy is slated to make its debut soon.

As reported by VIBE, DJ Screw, born Robert Earl Davis, Jr., saw his name rise in the Houston streets after introducing the slowed-down remix style in the 1990s and also the hundreds of the official Screwtape mixtape series.

Filmmaker Isaac “Chill” Yowman is the mind behind All Screwed Up, the name of the series which focused on Screw’s life. The series stars  Rosha Washington, Paigion Walker, Kyle Mosely, Marqus Clae, Phill Wade, Dean Will, Omete Anassi, Diamond Lyons, LaShae Boone, and Rodrick Randall.

More from the YouTube description from All Screwed Up‘s trailer:

All Screwed Up is a compelling new series centered around the legendary DJ Screw, born Robert Earl Davis Jr.. Not only was Screw a groundbreaking DJ, he invented a signature style that has transcended more than 2 decades of pop culture and spring-boarded the career of dozens.

His slow pitched “Chopped & Screwed” technique has been featured in Academy Award & Golden Globe Award-winning films and on dozens of multi-platinum, Billboard topping songs.

In 2000, DJ Screw passed away reportedly from a codeine overdose at the age of 29. In the wake of his passing, the largest regional chopped and screwed sound made its way into other city scenes and gave outside observers a first-hand glimpse into the Houston subgenre.

While it isn’t known when or where All Screwed Up will be hitting a streaming service or a related medium, a trailer for the series can be viewed below.
