Today in Hip Hop History: Jungle Brothers Released Their Debut LP ‘Straight Out the Jungle’ 31 Years Ago

On this day in Hip Hop history, the Jungle Brothers released their debut LP Straight Out the Jungle.  As the first project of the illustrious Native Tongues collective, other members include De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and Black Sheep, this album opened the door for a new type of conscious rap. With their Afrocentric influence and sample heavy production, the Jungle Brothers were able to create a unique sound in a saturated New York Hip Hop scene.

Coming at the end of the gold roped, tracksuited and Kangol Golden Age of Hip Hop this album ushered in a new era. Through a new style of sampling and almost no regard to the flamboyancy of mid-80’s rap, this album became a true trailblazer. The trio’s adventurous take on Hip Hop led to them exploring otherwise uncharted waters. Their jazz and house influence created a new lane for Hip Hop crossovers left behind by Def Jam’s obsession with rap-rock. The group’s lyrics were also a a healthy and needed change to the genre. Prior to it’s release, rap was mostly dominated by MC’s rapping about how much better they could rap than everyone else. The Jungle Brothers came with bars to enrich the mind and soul of their listeners rather than stroke their own ego. Songs like “Straight Out of The Jungle” and “Black is Back” were some of the first rap songs with an overtly pro-Black message.

Commercially, the album was a quiet success, peaking at only #39 on the Billboard 200. Critically however, this album was highly regarded as a new beginning for Hip Hop. Publications across the board hailed this album was a fresh take on rap as a whole. This album kicked off a new counter-culture in Hip Hop. Fans began to leave behind their flashy get-ups for dashikis and leather African pendents fueled by a new sense of blackness and cultural pride. Thanks to the Jungle Brothers and their debut, the early 90’s became the Hip Hop equivalent to the late 60’s of rock ‘n’ roll.

Today In Hip Hop History: Boogie Down Productions Dropped Their Debut LP ‘Criminal Minded’ 32 Years Ago

On this date in 1987, “Blastmaster” KRS-One, DJ Scott La Rock, “The Human 808” D-Nice and the rest of the Boogie Down Productions crew released their highly anticipated debut album Criminal Minded on B-Boy Records.

With the “South Bronx” vs. “The Bridge” aka BDP vs. The Juice Crew beef on wax was at its height, the Criminal Minded album proved to be one of the most important instructional projects for up and coming emcees on how to take out the top dog and start your own reign. As KRS mentioned in the QDIII Beef documentary, if MC Shan wouldn’t have responded to “The Bridge Is Over”, one of the premiere singles from the album, there probably would not have been the rise and success of KRS and BDP.

With Boogie Down Productions aligned with DJ Red Alert on the FM dial at 98.7 KISS and The Juice Crew siding with the one and only Mister Magic and Marley Marl on 107.5 WBLS, it also began the early radio wars, which is actually the origin of the HOT 97 and Power 105 battle on the dial.

Tracks that will forever be etched in Hip Hop history include intellectually adept “Poetry”, the street sagas in “My 9mm Goes Bang” and “P Is Still Free”, the late Scott La Rock inspired “Super Hoe” and the extensive lyrical lesson in the album’s title track. Ironically, Scott Sterling, better known as DJ Scott La Rock, was killed less than six months after the album’s successful release.

Following Scott’s death, KRS began dropping socially conscious singles and albums, prompting Hip Hop’s “Stop The Violence” movement and the iconic, star-studded “Self Destruction” single.

Stream The New Good People LP. It Features Great Guests Including Large Pro & Lil Fame

The Good People are two Hip-Hop purists. Together, DJ/MC Emskee and producer/MC The Saint make music with throwback sensibilities that refuses to pander. The music feels good, is accessible and it sounds really good. That is especially true of Good For Nuthin’, the just-released LP that features Large Professor, M.O.P.’s Lil Fame, Brand Nubian’s Sadat X, the Cella Dwellas, and Kool DJ Red Alert.

Their fourth album follows a trajectory of limited edition vinyl releases, label partnerships, and past collaborations with Prince Po, JR & PH7, and others.

Large Professor Confirms That Main Source Is Making New Music

Well, it took more than a half decade to record their proper follow-up to 2012’s Gone For Good, but on January 15 this twosome shared their fourth album, Good For Nuthin’, and was it was worth the wait. They clearly took their time putting this LP together. From the head-nodding beats that are so much more than just simple loops (listen to the vibraphone solo on “Get Up” for reference), to the lyrical fitness, to the uplifting messages, it’s obvious this was a labor of love for these two grown-up B-Boys. The guest line-up here also illustrates that they respect good Hip-Hop from any era.

On “Self Destruct” The Good People straight up channel B.D.P., while on “This Far” they tackle the ridiculous state of the music industry with the Cella Dwellas help, and “Mahalia” is full of social commentary that should be mandatory listening in schools. Regardless of how dope those joints are, the pinnacle of this offering are the two celebrations of Hip-Hop music and culture, “Headphones” (with captivating production) and “Off The Block.” The former, a video single (embedded below), captures the listening experience that has connected so many of us to great music amid challenging times.
