Today In Hip Hop History: The Source Magazine Remembers Digital Underground’s Shock G Three Years Later

Hip Hop legend Gregory "Shock G" Jacobs

On this date in 2021, Gregory Jacobs aka Shock G of the legendary Digital Underground, passed away in his home in Tampa, Florida. He was 57 years old.

Shock helped co-found DU in 1987, which spawned the career of one of Hip Hop’s most prolific icons to date; Tupac Shakur. Also, Jacobs’ self-created alter ego Humpty Hump made up the classic “Humpty Dance” that helped popularize the group in 1989.

Shock G was found dead in a hotel room and it has been revealed that the hotel manager was the last one to see Shock alive outside of the building the day before he died. When Shock missed his check-out time the next day, the manager became concerned and went to the rapper’s room. The manager found Shock unresponsive and called 911.

According to the report from the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner, Shock G, died in April from a lethal mixture of of fentanyl, ethanol (alcohol) and methamphetamine.

Shock G was laid to rest in Tampa, Florida following a May 1 funeral service.

Shock G To Be Honored In Oakland, California

A celebration of life for the beloved Shock G, the one who put the satin on your panties.

The late, Shock G of Digital Underground, who’s real name is Gregory Jacobs will be honored in Oakland, California. 

Shock’s manager, Atron Gregory, confirmed the city-wide event will be held on August 21st. The event will pay tribute to the man who created the Humpty Dance and so much more.

According to reports, the late rapper’s family will begin the day feeding two-thousand homeless.  City officials say the celebration will wrap up with live performances, speakers and more. 

Following the event there will be an after-party held at the New Parish Hotel with several DJs working the turntables.

Shock G died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, alcohol and methamphetamine on April 22, 2021. The “Same Song” rapper was 57.

Shock G Died From Accidental Overdose Of Fentanyl, Meth, Alcohol

According to the report from the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner made exclusive by TMZ, Shock G, founder of legendary Hip Hop band Digital Underground, died in April from a lethal mixture of of fentanyl, ethanol (alcohol) and methamphetamine.

Shock, who was born Gregory Jacobs, was found unresponsive in his Tampa, Florida hotel room April 22, when the manager of the hotel noticed that the famed rapper and producer missed his check out time. The hotel manager called 911, who last saw Shock the day before he died. He was 57 years old.

Shock G will forever be remembered for his original “Humpty Hump” persona and the epic “Humpty Dance” that invaded Hip Hop dance circles in the late 80s. Additionally, Shock is the catalyst to launch the career of one of the most prolific artists in Hip Hop culture; Tupac Shakur.

Shock G was laid to rest in Tampa, Florida following a May 1 funeral service.

Funeral Plans Set For Digital Underground’s Shock G In Tampa

Hip Hop legend Gregory "Shock G" Jacobs

According to a report from TMZ, the funeral arrangements for Hip Hop legend Gregory “Shock G” Jacobs are scheduled for this Saturday in Tampa, Florida, with members of the iconic group Digital Underground planning to attend.

The news came from Shock’s manager, Atron Gregory, about the funeral plans, while Money B of DU is helping the family prepare for the services. it has also been announced that Tupac’s brother, Mopreme Shakur, will also be in attendance.

Shock G was found dead in a hotel room not far from where his funeral will be held. He was 57 years old.

His cause of death is still undetermined, but it has been revealed that the hotel manager was the last one to see Shock alive outside of the building the day before he died. When Shock missed his check-out time the next day, the manager became concerned and went to the rapper’s room. The manager found Shock unresponsive and called 911.
