Today in Hip-Hop History: Pete Rock & CL Smooth Released ‘The Main Ingredient’ 29 Years Ago

On this day in 1994, Pete Rock and CL Smooth via Elektra Records dropped their second album, The Main Ingredient, twenty-four years ago today.

Produced exclusively by the legend Pete Rock himself, The Main Ingredient defined the sound of the Money Earnin’ Mount Vernon duo, with Pete’s signature horns and jazz-laced drums patterns, tracks like “I Got A Love”, which derived from The Ambassadors’ “Ain’t Got The Love” and was sampled in Jay-Z’s and Jay Elec’s “Shiny Suit Theory,” and “Sun Won’t Come Out” became the “production prediction” of Pete Rock even outside of his projects with CL.

Ironically, this was the duo’s last album together, never citing reasons for their separation. Nevertheless, we thank Pete Rock & CL Smooth for this time capsule of Hip Hop purity. Salute!

Thirty years ago today [June 25], Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth unleashed their 1991 debut EP, All Souled Out, to critical acclaim. All Souled Out was a precursor to their official Elektra Records debut 1992’s Mecca and the Soul Brother.

All the rapping on the album is performed by C.L. Smooth with the exception of “The Creator,” which is a Pete Rock solo track. A deluxe edition of All Souled Out was released on February 18, 2014, on Traffic Entertainment Group, featuring the original six EP tracks, along with remix and instrumental versions of “The Creator” and “Mecca & the Soul Brother.”

Pete Rock Recreates “They Reminisce Over You” Behind The Turntables (Video)

Last Wednesday (May 22) at New York City’s Chelsea Music Hall, Pete Rock celebrated the release of his latest instrumental album, The Return Of The SP1200, with a party. Of course, Rock had to show off his DJing skills and have some fun of his own. He jammed with a band that included a respected cast of Daru Jones, Marcus Machado, and MonoNeon. Ambrosia For Heads was in the building to catch the momentous affair. Meanwhile, “The Chocolate Boy Wonder” posted up behind the turntables and other sound-providing equipment. While spinning some records and showcasing his chops and scratching talents, Rock gave his crowd a smooth transition from a classic joint he sampled for one of his most beloved creations, 1992’s “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.).” Pete Rock Speaks To Video Music Box After The Death Of Trouble T. Roy That Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth class samples Tom Scott & The California Dreamers’ brassy cover of the Jefferson Airplane track, “Today”. From Mecca And The Soul Brother, “T.R.O.Y.” features some legendary saxophone riffs that echo and loop throughout its benchmark Hip-Hop/Jazz fusion. P.R. shows off the beat connection between the brass heard on “Today” by playing his sample’s source, while flawlessly transitioning into his and C.L.’s homage to Heavy D & The Boyz’ “Trouble T. Roy,” who died from a fall in 1991. Rock shows off his skills once again, as he casually allows “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” to play out. The cool, jazzy influence is definitely noted.
