Today In Hip Hop History: Hip Hop Cult Classic Flick ‘Krush Groove’ Released In Theaters 37 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2022 10 25 at 9.16.09 AM

On this date in 1985, Hip-Hop bigwig Russell Simmons along with film producer Michael Schultz unveiled the Hip-Hop glory days fairy tale about the early days of Def Jam in the Warner Brothers distributed Krush Groove.

This cinematic, quasi-musical was told in a very unique manner, with almost all of the artists playing themselves as the story is being told; The Fat Boys, Run-D.M.C., Kurtis Blow, Jeckyl and Hyde, the Beastie Boys and Sheila E. all starred as themselves, while being managed by Russell(ironically, played by Blair Underwood) and a young Rick Rubin before they became the icons that they are recognized as today. The flick even gives a quick peek into how Def Jam’s rookie and first solo artist L.L. Cool J was recruited in Def Jam’s NYU dorm “office”.

The movie’s soundtrack boasts more than a few hits, such as The Fat Boys’ “All You Can Eat”. LL’s “I Can’t Live Without My Radio”, the original “If I Ruled The World” by Kurtis Blow, which was famously remixed by Nas and Lauryn Hill a decade after the movie’s release and the title track by The Krush Groove All Stars.

Shout out to all of the legends who were quarterbacked by Hip-Hop’s Barack Russell Simmons in making this Def Jam biopic forever a Hip Hop classic!

Blair Underwood and His Wife of 27 Years Desiree DaCosta Announce Their Divorce

Blair Underwood and his wife, Desiree DaCosta, are the latest couple to announce their divorce amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The ex-couple announced their split in a joint statement, vowing to prioritize their children’s “best interest,” as per People.

“After a tremendous amount of thought, prayer & work on ourselves individually & collectively, we have come to the conclusion to end our marriage that began 27 years ago,” the statement began.

“It has truly been a beautiful journey,” Blair Underwood and Desiree DaCosta continued. “Our proudest achievements are our three incredible children. Three souls to which God entrusted us. We continue to be awed & humbled by the blessings of parenting. We have always put their best interests first & will continue to do so.”

The statement continued, “We will continue to be the best of friends and co-parents and have the utmost respect for one another as we embark on this new chapter of our lives, separately.”

Earlier this month, Underwood gushed about his daughter, Brielle, graduating from the University of Southern California.

“Could not be more proud of my “one & only daughter,” Brielle for graduating from USC yesterday! Such a long march but worth every step! Wouldn’t have missed it for the world!,” he wrote, adding the hashtags #GirlDad #prouddad #TheFutureIsNow #FightOn.

Although Blair Underwood and his wife are getting divorced, he credits her for taking on the role of doctor Robert Leeds in the cult classic series, Sex and the City.

“When the offer came in, I mentioned it to my wife and she’s like, ‘No, you need to do that. Why are you even pausing? You want to go do that.’ I thank her for that,” he said.

The couple got married in 1994 and have three children together.

Blair Underwood Reveals Jada Pinkett-Smith Used Body Double in ‘Set It Off’ Sex Scene

If you’re a fan of the critically-acclaimed film, Set It Off then you’re familiar with Jada Pinkett-Smith’s steamy sex scene with Blair Underwood. Well, it turns out the scene didn’t actually feature the actress.

Underwood made a guest appearance on the Strong Black Legends podcast and spilled the tea. “For ‘Set It Off’, we had a love scene and Jada had a body double. She made the choice, and understandably, and people do that… for the physical body parts. Which I respect, like absolutely.”

He added, “Literally, this actress comes in like ‘Hi, nice to meet you, and you jump right in the bed and do all the physical stuff. It can be awkward sometimes.”

This clearly didn’t leave a strain in the actors’ relationship because Blair Underwood showed love to Red Table Talk on his Instagram page about a week ago.

Underwood has built an infamous reputation for portraying a “bad husband” in movies as noted by Black Twitter.

He recently starred in Netflix’s docu-series, Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker. Did you catch his performance?
