Roommate and Boyfriend Charged with Murder of Clark Atlanta Student Alexis Crawford

Alexis Crawford, a missing student from Clark Atlanta University, was found dead Friday in an Atlanta area park on Friday. According to CNN, the 21-year-old woman was missing from her off-campus apartment over a week ago, Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields reported the finding.

Police detail suspects in the death of Crawford are her roommate Jordyn Jones, 21, and the roommate’s boyfriend, Barron Brantley, 21. One of the suspects was able to lead searching officers to Crawford’s body.

“The case has come to one of the saddest conclusions possible and has been absolutely heartbreaking,” the chief said. “To Alexis’ family, our hearts go out to you. I am so truly sorry that we could not provide you with a better ending.”

“Alexis’ mother was literally unable to speak. All that she could do was listen as I tried to console and comfort her,” Rev. Markel Hutchins, advisor to the Crawford family, said. “Alexis’ father said, ‘If they wanted to take somebody’s life they could have taken mine. They didn’t have to kill my baby, they didn’t have to kill her.’”

Hutchins also stated her father said to him, “I know God doesn’t make any mistakes.”

Crawford’s sister was the last person to speak to her, exchanging text conversations about weekend plans. Jones stated the last time she saw Crawford was int he apartment around midnight before going to bed but she wasn’t the next morning. She also revealed the home was locked by a deadbolt. The iPhone, ID and debit card of Crawford was also missing from her home.

Before her disappearance, Crawford filed a police report against one of the suspects, Brantley, stating she was unwittingly being kissed and touched.

Crawford’s death was determined to be the result of asphyxiation, stated by the Atlanta PD in a news release.

“While a motive has not been clearly established, the department did take a police report from Alexis Crawford on October 27, and this is a few days prior to her being reported missing,” Shields said. “In this report, Alexis described unwanted kissing and touching from Barron Brantley.”

Brantley is now in Fulton County Jail accused of murder and three probation violations, one of which is “hindering person making emergency telephone call.” Jones is also facing a murder charge.
