Roddy Ricch Says His Next Album Will Be a ‘Masterpiece’

Roddy Ricch is laying low while he readies his next act.

The Compton rapper has been on a roll following the release of his debut Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial in December, which spawned the smash hit “The Box.” But the last several months have forced him to slow down as live shows are on hold due to the pandemic. While quarantined at home, Roddy spoke with GQ about how he’s been spending his time and plans for his sophomore album.

“I’m just in the house. Cooling. This is normal for me,” he says.

When it comes to TV, he’s been binge-watching 50 Cent’s “For Life,” while his quarantine playlist includes Snoh Alegra, Charlie Wilson, and Stevie Wonder. The new dad has also been cooking more. “I’ve been eating healthier,” says Roddy, who prepared salmon and mashed potatoes during a recent meal.

Despite the lockdown, his musical output hasn’t been affected much. “Maybe I make a little less music but I feel like for me right now less is more,” he says. “Because then when I step in the booth I’ll say some crazy shit. I could work for two or three days and make fifty songs. And then I’ll step away for like a week. Less is more. Spending more time figuring out how I feel and figuring out different things around me.”

He’s also thinking about his sophomore album, but he’s in no rush. “Could I drop a new album right now? Yes. Will I? No,” he says.

When the time is right, he will release it. “It’s really not about it being ready or not ready. It’s more about the timing. I really just drop when I feel like it,” he adds.

And when it does arrive, he promises greatness. “The next album is going to be a full blown masterpiece. A real idea. A real body of work.”

In the meantime, his collaboration with DaBaby, “Rockstar,” remains No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and he was recently nominated for three awards at the 2020 MTV VMAs.
