Pixar Creates Its First Black-led Animated Movie

By: Amira Lawson

Pixar is back at it again with another potential family favorite. The studio has released the trailer for its new film, Soul. What makes this movie different from the rest, is that it will be the first Pixar movie with a black lead. That’s right, out of all the 21 movies released by the Walt Disney Company, Soul will be its first movie with a black main character.

The tale will be about a middle school band teacher named Joe Gardner whose dream is to be a jazz musician. The character will be voice animated by Django’s very own, Jamie Foxx. Once Gardner falls into a manhole, he ends up in a mysterious place that makes him realize he’s just a soul. The movie’s intent is to illustrate the true meaning of life and show what it means to have a soul.

Pixar has a repeating of creating bittersweet life stories from many fictional character favorites for children. To name a few, some of Pixar’s greatest movies include Inside Out, Toy Story 3, The Incredibles, Wall -E, Ratatouille, Cars, Finding Dory and Up. Most of your childhood right? Soul will make adults feel nostalgic as it takes the stride one step further by making its main character, not a talking fish or a cooking rat, but a story revolving around an adult man trying to find his sense of purpose.
