Black Panther took the top prize, the award for “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture” at The 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards. With this significant win, the superhero blockbuster could be in position to capture the “Best Picture” prize The Academy Awards next month.

Black Panther lead Chadwick Boseman spoke about the impact of the film proudly declared the words of Nina Simone in his acceptance speech and said, “To be young, gifted and black!”

“We know what it’s like to be told there isn’t a screen for you to be featured on, a stage for you to be featured on. … We know what’s like to be beneath and not above. And that is what we went to work with every day,” Boseman continued. “We knew that we could create a world that exemplified a world we wanted to see. We knew that we had something to give.”

At the opening of the show, actor Geoffrey Owens was greeted with a rousing ovation.  Owens, most notably from The Cosby Show, was ridiculed in the news in 2018 for working at Trader Joes to make ends meet. He said,  “Somewhere in the middle of the road of my life, I found myself in the dark wood of unemployment and debt, but instead of switching careers like a sane person, I took a job at the local Trader Joe’s to see if I could hang in there with my career, and it’s actually worked out pretty well. I’m Geoffrey Owens and I am an actor.”

Other winners included Mahershala Ali, for “Best Supporting Actor” for his performance in Peter Farrelly’s Green Book.
