BLACK STAR (yasiin bey and Talib Kweli) Announce ‘No Fear of Time’ Vinyl & CD Release

unnamed 38

Today, Black Star announces the physical release of their 2022 sophomore album No Fear of Time, available on vinyl and CD for the first time ever, November 22nd via Rhymesayers Entertainment. Pre-order available at blackstarkeepshining.com.

“The initial release of this album in itself was an artistic statement,” stated Rhymesayers CEO Siddiq Sayers. “To be bold enough to bring this highly anticipated album to fans in a non-traditional way that centers the art and artist first is exactly what artistic independence is about. That spirit is at the core of what we’ve done at Rhymesayers for close to 30 years, and we’re proud to bring this album from a group so important to the culture into the world in the physical form.”

No Fear of Time finally reunites one of the greatest hip-hop duos of all-time nearly a quarter century after their debut. Group members yasiin bey and Talib Kweli, both enormously influential hip hop artists in their own right, first joined forces as Black Star to deliver their iconic 1998 breakout, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, which quickly became one of hip-hop’s most revered works and launched both already-rising stars into the stratosphere.

After years spent nurturing their respective solo careers, the duo returned with the Madlib-produced No Fear of Time in 2022, recorded guerrilla-style around the globe in hotels and in dressing rooms at Dave Chappelle’s shows over the course of four years and released exclusively via the podcast platform Luminary. Luminary is also the home of The Midnight Miracle podcast, which the duo hosted with Chappelle. An official video was produced for album highlight “So Be It,” which the duo also performed during their SNL debut, as well as a lyric video for “o.G.”

The album will be available on single-LP vinyl, CD, and cassette, along with a limited deluxe double-LP that includes both the main version and the instrumentals, each pressed on 180-gram vinyl in unique color treatments blending opaque white and opaque gold with translucent black ice and a metallic star effect. This deluxe vinyl edition is limited to 2000 units and features a foil stamped and numbered matte gatefold jacket, two full-color printed record sleeves, an 8-page matte lyric booklet, and an exclusive silver foil laminated heavyweight insert. Additionally, 300 units of the deluxe vinyl will be available as a premium bundle, which will include everything in the deluxe 2xLP vinyl package, with insert hand-signed by all three artists – yasiin bey, Talib Kweli and Madlib – along with a No Fear of Time t-shirt and a pair of Black Star slipmats.

Talib Kweli Addresses Aye Verb Feud on Math Hoffa’s ‘My Expert Opinion’

Talib Kweli Addresses Aye Verb Feud on Math Hoffa's 'My Expert Opinion'

In a recent episode of Math Hoffa’s “My Expert Opinion” show, Brooklyn emcee Talib Kweli sat down with Math and his crew for an engaging discussion. The episode began with light-hearted banter, acknowledging the New York Knicks’ playoff success and cracking jokes about Ja Rule, before delving into more serious topics, including Kweli’s issues with battle rapper Aye Verb.

During the first part of the interview, Talib Kweli admitted that he didn’t know who Aye Verb was until seeing him on Math Hoffa’s show. When Math asked Kweli about his current stance on Aye Verb after their long interaction on X (formerly Twitter), Kweli stated, “I don’t have a relationship with him, I don’t have his contact info. Before he had my name in his mouth, I didn’t know anything about him.” Despite this, Kweli acknowledged Aye Verb’s success in battle rap and commented on the optics of Verb’s previous appearance on “My Expert Opinion.”

Math Hoffa responded to Aye Verb’s criticisms of his platform, saying, “You shouldn’t spit on a blessing and right now, I feel like that’s what he’s doing.” Kweli praised Hoffa for his handling of the situation, comparing it to how Joe Budden managed similar issues on The Joe Budden Podcast.

In the second part of the interview, Talib Kweli addressed being kicked off social media in the past and responded to additional claims by Aye Verb. He referenced an incident where he made a negative post about Donald Trump, which was criticized by one of Aye Verb’s friends. The friend commented, “the left and right wings are on the same bird,” criticizing Kweli’s political views. Kweli maintained his stance, calling Trump a white supremacist and explaining how the issues played out on social media. He also described Aye Verb as seeing himself as the “Kevin Samuels of the battle rap world,” criticizing his hypermasculine approach and derogatory comments towards women.

Talib Kweli Accused Of Harassing Woman For 3 Years: Shocking Allegations Surface

Talib Kweli

A woman named @moneyymaya on social media recently posted a concerning tweet hinting at potential harm and seemingly pointing towards Talib Kweli as responsible. Following this, there was an outpouring of support from users, expressing solidarity with Maya. The situation escalated as the Black Star member, a well-known figure, responded on Instagram, referencing a legal matter and accusing Maya of making false statements about him, which intensified the online dispute.

‘If I Am Murdered, You Know Who Is Responsible’

Talib Kweli is one-half of the Black Star duo who recently collaborated after 24 years, with the release of their new album in 2022. Kweli has been accused by a woman named Maya Angelique, also known as @moneyymaya on social media, of allegedly harassing her for three years on social media.

Maya Angelique, also known as Maya Moody, took to Twitter, creating a thread on Saturday, Nov. 18, where she posted a disturbing message that read:

“If I am murdered, you know who is responsible.”

The tweet caught the attention of many, including social media influencer @keyon, who expressed support for Angelique, writing:

“The way he’s been at it for years now I’m so sorry Maya. Praying for your safety.”

Talib Kweli Responds

Responding to Angelique’s tweets, Talib Kweli reposted her messages on Instagram, alongside a caption writing:

“When you lie about me I tell the truth about you. Recently judge David A. Oblson in a VA court entered a default judgment against Maya Moody AKA Money Maya on my defamation claim related to her lies about me. Case No. CL-2023-115500. So naturally, today Money Maya is suggesting that I rape children and saying that I’m coming to murder her. Again. All of you who said ‘So if she lying sue her,’ got your wish. The court of public opinion doesn’t count in actual court. All of ya’ll who said I was lying about this case swipe left. Feel free to leave your apologies in the comment section below.”

According to Angelique’s tweets, the alleged harassment began on July 10, 2020. In a series of tweets in April 2021, she detailed:

“Since I was told by my lawyer this week I legally cannot do much of anything to defend or protect myself against this harassment, Talib Kweli is still lying on, slandering, and harassing me for talking about colorism. He has been since July 10, 2020. He HAS NOT STOPPED.” She continued, “He went on SIRIUSXM Radio on the Roxanne Shante show on March 1, 2021 lying saying I had people threatening his family and that I was attacking him, self victimizing himself and saying he was kicked off twitter for defending him. In reality, it is the COMPLETE OPPOSITE.”

What Happened?

The alleged harassment reportedly started when Angelique commented on a tweet listing hip-hop icons married to Black women, including Talib Kweli. She remarked:

“Literally almost all of them are married to light-skinned women, but that’s a conversation for another day.”

In response, Kweli warned her:

“I can go for 13 years if you come for my family. I’m just getting started.” He then replied to a sequence of users, asserting, “Or what? I can persist in this for 2 years. If ya’ll grow weary after 2 days, maybe ya’ll should have selected a weaker target.” “And I will persist for 12 years unless she either apologizes for the disrespect toward me and my family or deletes her account. What the hell are you gonna do about it? Pick a weaker target next time.”

Angelique Thanks Noname

Angelique expressed her gratitude to R&B artist Noname for being the only celebrity to denounce Kweli’s actions:

“Thank you NoName, who is literally the ONLY celebrity that has denounced Talib Kweli’s continuous stalking and harassment of me. Thank you for not enabling him like all of his other peers. I love you and I am grateful for you.” The rapper Noname had criticized Kweli during his frequent messages to Moody, saying on Twitter: “The silence from male rappers while talib kweli harassed black women for weeks, disgusting.”

Talib Kweli Talks To The Grio

Kweli himself addressed the situation in an interview with media outlet The Grio in 2020. He explained:

“The reason why it caught my eyes was because it mentioned my name. [The original poster] was responding to someone who said the only rapper who married a Black woman is Snoop. His response was to make a list of rappers who are married to Black women, to sort of combat the idea that rappers don’t marry Black women. When I saw his tweet, including my name as a rapper who married a Black woman, even though I’m not with my wife any longer, I was proud to be included in the group. Right under his tweet, I saw a comment from Maya Moody.”

He also stated:

“I don’t know her at all. I believe her name is Maya Moody. She’s somebody who followed me on Twitter. And then I followed back as recently as 2016. I remember that I did unfollow her. I don’t recall the reason. But I suspect that unfollowing her is part of the story. I sent you a tweet from 2016 when I stopped following her to which she said “Talib, love you forever.” And then I retweeted it and added to it [with] prayer hands [emoji].”

Cassie Vs. Diddy

The music industry has been rocked by various disturbing revelations recently. R&B singer Cassie made serious allegations against Diddy, accusing him of sexual and physical abuse during their long-term relationship.

Liberation Calls for Global Unification Through Space & Time on Sophomore Album “Liberation 2” (Album Review)

Liberation is a MC/producer duo consisting of Brooklyn veteran Talib Kweli on the mic & Oxnard extraordinaire Madlib behind the boards. The pair first linked up in ‘07 off the strength off an eponymous self-titled debut backed by Stones Throw Records & have collaborated with each other a handful of times since, with the last time being Black Star’s long-awaited sophomore album no fear of time* about 10 months ago at this point. An album much like Gotham’s own self-titled debut the year before proved that Kweli can still make great music even though I’m not afraid to acknowledge the fact that he makes a total prick out of himself on social media these days. Nonetheless, Liberation’s returning in effect for a sequel to their debut that’s been 2 years in the making & I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to it.

After the “Assata’s Code” intro, the first song “Best Year Ever” sets the album up with a jazzy boom bap instrumental & Kweli talking about how things are only gonna get better from hereon out whereas “Air Quotes” has a more empowering quality to the beat as the subject matter delves into the fakeness & toxicity of everyone else in the rap game. “Nat Turner” with Cassper Nyovest blends trap with afrobeats obviously getting on a more conscious tip lyrically, but then “1 for Biz” with Wildchild works in some pianos along with these kicks & snares to pay homage to the late Biz Markie.

Meanwhile on “Loop Digga’s Revenge”, we have Madlib hooking up a soul sample shouting out those who grew up staring at album covers & encouraging to come to a show if you wanna see the greatest in action just before Pink Siifu tags along for the the slick “Ad Vice” talking about how unapologetic both of he & Kweli are with the latter’s daughter Diani on the hook. “Wild Sweet Love” comes through with a drumless get spacious vibe getting romantic leading into the flute/string-tinged “Wild Beauty” instrumental interlude. The late Mac Miller slides through for “The Right to Love Us” reminding everyone what our women are fighting accompanied by a jazzy beat with some heavy kicks while “After These Messages” with Amani finds him joining his dad on the mic so the father-son pair deliver a meditation on American racism over some keys, strings & horns

Roc Marciano & Westside Gunn tag along for the sequel to the highlight track “Richies” off Hitler Wears Hermes IX down to the same Soul Superiors sample “Trust in Me Baby” as the trio bring it raw on the mic while the track “Marathon Through Babylon” has a colder tone instrumentally as Talib & Meshell Ndegeocello both ponder why & when did everyone become such sheep as well as comparing their rhymes to that of alkaline. Lastly prior to the “Assata’s Reprise” outro, the final song “Something Special” really ends the album by mixing these synthesizers with jazz-funk icon Roy Ayers on the vibraphones by calling this innovation as opposed to imitation.

I with all respect like to compare Kweli to Kanye in the sense that both of them are established veterans with an insane amount of artistic talent who publicly make asses of themselves on the regular & I say that because when you think about that in the grand scheme of things, the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree. That being said: Liberation 2 most certainly lived up to my expectations by continuing Talib’s artistic redemption that the Gotham album began & no fear of time* continued on with. Madlib’s production is potently jazzy & dusty with the whole concept of globally unifying through space & time undeniably needed to be heard.

Score: 9/10

Talib Kweli & Madlib Release “After These Message,” Announces ‘Liberation 2’ Album for March 6

Talib Kweli & Madlib Release "After These Message," Announces 'Liberation 2' Album for March 6

Iconic partners rapper Talib Kweli and producer Madlib will release Liberation 2 exclusively on Luminary next month. Liberation 2 is their first album in 17 years, following the release of their seminal collection Liberation in 2006.

Subscribers to Luminary will be able to access the album. “After These Messages,” the album’s first song, is available exclusively on Luminary today.

“After These Messages” is notable for including a special performance by Kweli’s son Amani Kweli — a groundbreaking father-son duet in a rap song. Diani Kweli, Kweli’s daughter, will appear on additional tracks in Liberation 2.

“This album was written, recorded and mixed over ten years. It’s expansive in concept but tight in its substance and approach,” Kweli said of the forthcoming album. “People today are taking stock of what is most important –  family, health, wellness, love.  The materialism and debauchery that is stereotypically associated with hip hop has lost some of its luster.  Madlib and I have been consistent in our messaging. Never has there been a better time for such honest, message driven music that pays tribute to the sounds that came before us.”

On the “After These Messages” video, Kweli and Madlib collaborated with Austin, Texas, videographer Chino Chase to create a simple and austere style that highlights the bars and performance. The video includes artwork by Brooklyn artist Voodo Fé and African artist Aissata Pinto Da Costa, who currently lives in New York.

Kweli made two journeys to Africa while recording the album and music videos for Liberation 2, visiting Ghana for the Black Star Line event, as well as Tanzania and South Africa. It also includes appearances by Q-Tip, Wildchild, Roc Marciano, Westside Gunn, and a posthumous contribution from Mac Miller.

Kweli added, “Liberation 2 is a story of how agents can never stop true creatives from linking up and building.  Our partnership with Luminary allows us to retain ownership, allowing us to create an exclusive experience for listeners. I’m excited to be at the forefront of Luminary’s foray into the music space, and we have a chance to change the industry for the better with the release of this album.”
