Smif-n-Wessun Plan to Stay Until “Infinity” (Album Review)

Brooklyn, New York duo Smif-n-Wessun consisting of Tek & Steele of the Boot Camp Clik returning with Jamla Records’ in-house production team The Soul Council for their 8th studio LP. Their 1995 debut Dah Shinin’ is widely regarded as an East Coast classic & the Pete Rock produced Monumental, I enjoy almost as much. The All maintained the high quality consistency of Monumental by teaming with The Soul Council for the first time, looking to do it again 6 years later on Infinity.

The title track produced by Khrysis begins The All sequel by promising that they’ll be here for eternity whereas “Moses Promise” takes the soulful boom bap route instrumentally needing the whole team to be straight in order to catch wins. “Namaste” romantically tells their partners they ain’t in a rush tonight with the help of Ka$h behind the boards leading into “Medina” featuring Pharoahe Monch bringing it hardcore over a vocal sample from Sndtrak.

“Black Eminence” featuring the late Prodigy exuberantly turns it up after being asked to tone it down some while “Chuuch” works in a gospel flip talking about keeping it rolling whether it be better or worse. “Beautiful Trip” keeps the sampling chops going flexing that the reach they have has been global for 3 decades, but then “Enjoy Ya Life” brings these pianos in the fold courtesy of 9th Wonder talking about making the best of the short time we have here on Earth.

As for “Shine”, we have Tek & Steele heading for a groovier approach explaining that they value those they battle for while “Just Stay!” featuring Conway the Machine hops over this crooning vocal sample to talk about running through whole entire squads. “On My Soul” featuring Buckshot finds the trio tackling the theme of loyalty & camaraderie while “Heard About Me” featuring the late Sean Price soulfully asks if you heard everything said regarding them lately.

“Elephant in the Room” hits the final moments of Infinity with the 2nd & final single talking about never being traitors because they find those type of people to be worse than bitches & the Nottz-laced closer “Bad Guy” rounds it all out by making everyone listening choose between whether they want to hear the ugly truth or a pretty lie being told to them when most would rather pick the pretty lies since honesty hurts sometimes.

Several years after The Soul Council first got with Smif-n-Wessun, the Jamla in-house production team ensures that Infinity didn’t sound dated it all by giving the duo the classic sound they’re known for & making it feel new in the process. They reflect of their life experiences after all these decades refusing to curve to conformity & staying true to their roots with a great list of guests in addition to the stellar production.

Score: 9/10

Today in Hip-Hop History: Black Moon Dropped Their Debut Album ‘Enta Da Stage’ 31 Years Ago

On this date in 1993, Buckshot Shorty, the 5 Foot MC amd DJ Evil Dee released their first full-length album, Enta Da Stage, in 1993 on Nervous Records. This is undoubtedly one of the most pivotal albums to the sub-genre now coined as “backpack rap”.

With total in-house production from Evil Dee and The Beatminerz’ Mr. Walt, Enta Da Stage tells the narrative of the gritty streets of Crown Heights, Brooklyn from the perspective of young, Black teenagers submerged in that environment. With a very cinematic feel, the album captures the essence of the unforgiving streets while maintaining its conceptual focus of using the music to magnify the environment. The album also introduced fans to the poetic, weed-puffing duo Smif N Wessun and Heltah Skeltah, the origin of the late, great Sean Price.

Recorded entirely in the world-renowned and now-defunct D&D Studios, tracks that propelled the project include songs like “I Got Cha Opin”, “How Many MCs”, which was powered by a KRS-One sample, and the lead single, “Who Got The Props?”, the track that would forever etch Black Moon in Hip Hop history.

Salute to Buck, Evil Dee, 5Ft., Mr. Walt, Dru Ha, and the rest of the Duck Down/Boot Camp Clik family for this timeless classic!

Today In Hip Hop History: Smif N’Wessun’s Brooklyn Anthem “Bucktown” Turns 30 Years Old!

Screenshot 2024 05 28 at 10.43.04 PM

On this date three decades ago, Brooklyn rap duo Smif N’ Wessun dropped the premiere single “Bucktown” from their debut album Dah Shinin on the Wreck/Nervous imprint.

Tek and Steele left a lasting impression on Black Moon fans, making their first appearance on wax on the 1993 Enta Da Stage LP, leaving listeners in anticipation for the next offering from the brothers from Brownsville. Produced by DJ Evil Dee and Da Beatminerz’ Mr. Walt, Bucktown is unequivocally the K anthem of the 90s, reminding Brooklynites and out of towners alike that “The Planet” is indeed the “home of the orignoo gun clappaz”.

Even with its street centered concept, Bucktown still managed to garner charting position, peaking at number 93 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Salute to Tek, Steele, Evil Dee and Mr. Walt for this important piece of Hip Hop history!

Cheff Chop Debuts Two-In-One Video for New Singles “Stay Woke” Feat. Chris Rivers & Sadat X & “Khaleif” Feat. Smif-N-Wessun

Cheff Chop (f/k/a Chop Clark) provides a dope double-dose of new music and visuals with “Stay Woke/Khaleif,” a two-part video featuring a preview of his latest tracks.

The two parts of the video were shot by Vicuals, edited by Digital 5 Designs, and directed by Chop’s own Chopworks Media. This provides a throughline of consistency with the visuals, which perfectly reflect Chop’s lyrics and tone as they transition from night in “Stay Woke” to daytime with “Khaleif.” At the same time, both parts of the video capture the claustrophobic feeling of living in a city, surrounded by nothing but steel and concrete.

Lyrically, Chop is at the top of his game on these tracks. “Stay Woke” features the emcee at his most fired up as he lyrically decimates corrupt government officials. And with “Khaleif,” there’s a similar frustration, but it’s much more personal. Even better, the full versions of both singles include features from some heavy-hitters in hip-hop—Chris Rivers and Sadat X appear on “Stay Woke” while Smif-N-Wessun features on “Khaleif.”

“Stay Woke” is available now through all major streaming platforms, and you can expect to hear the full version of “Khaleif” very soon, which will be accompanied with an updated video featuring both Tek and Steele (Smif-N-Wessun). Chop’s new album, Best Laid Plans, is due out later this year via his own Chopworks Media label.

On this date in 1995, Steele and Tek aka Smif N Wessun of the legendary Boot Camp Clik released their debut album Dah Shinin’ on the ultra-indie imprint, Wreck Records.

This was also the sophomore effort of the Boot Camp Clik, which exposed the skills of more of the artists that were heard on Black Moon’s debut project, Enta Da Stage. Tracks such as “Cession at da Doghillee” and “Sound Bwoy Bureill” introduced members of Heltah Skeltah, the duo that included the late Sean Price, as well as the Originoo Gunn Clappaz(O.G.C.), which completed the epic Brooklyn rap collective.

With in-house production courtesy of Da Beatminerz, the Roy Ayers’ Ubiquity-Esque feel that was captured on the album’s cover can definitely be felt through the verses over the haunting tracks. Even though the album never reached gold status in terms of sales, Dah Shinin’ is undoubtedly one of the albums that define its era.

Smif-N-Wessun Are Back Paying Homage To Their Stomping Ground, “BKLYN”

Smif-N-Wessun together with fellow Brooklynites DJ Total Eclipse (X-ecutioners) on the cuts and Ran-Dee (Joint Adventure) on the beats, the New York natives come together to deliver a hard hitting 90’s Boom Bap throwback “BKLYN” that transports you to the last car on a dirty, grimey subway car, that drops you straight to the rugged streets of Kings County. From Brownsville to Bed Stuy, all the way to Coney Island and Canarsie, and everywhere in between, this track draws inspiration from all the best and worst parts of what makes BK the iconic destination it is. The people. The history. The food. The sounds, smells, hardship, pain, beauty and culture.

Smif-N-Wessun uses them all to help paint a masterpiece upon the canvas created by Ran-Dee’s production. World champion turntablist, DJ Total Eclipse, adds the finishing touches and eventually drops us right on the blocks of Bed Stuy where Biggie Smalls honed his craft. The single is complemented by a dope animated video created by rising star, Haus Riot, who has recently worked with the likes of Ill Bill, Onyx, Masta Ace, Snowgoons & more. Throughout the video you’ll catch props given to a small handful of the Hip Hop icons who came outta Brooklyn.
