Vice Verses Music Lives On With “Count On Me” Premiere Feat. Big Ox, Prolific Wone, & Slaine

Count On Me”, new music video featuring emcees Big OxProlific Wone and Slaine (as well as a verse from the late/great Vice Verses). Filmed by Jacob McCoy and using stunning night-time footage of New York City as a backdrop, the track (Produced by Zia Leonard / Idea Factory) is actually a tribute to brotherhood, family and Jason “Vice Verses” Williams (who passed in April 2020).

The track is especially touching as the trio of Vice, Prolific and Slaine started out in a group called I2I in the beginning of their professional careers (circa 1998). Shortly after the group ended (in the year 2000) Vice, Prolific and Big Zoo founded the End Of The Weak (EOW), a legendary hip-hop showcase and emcee competition, the EOW emcee challenge. As a host, curator and innovator Vice (along with his EOW family) helped introduce the world to such notables as Immortal Technique, NEMS, Justina Valentine, Jin and many more.

In more recent years End Of The Weak developed an online platform for curated hip-hop shows through their YouTube channel. Along with his best friend Big Ox, Vice opened a recording studio, Idea Factory where artists such as Jarobi (A Tribe Called Quest), Math HoffaAgallah and Rome Streetz put in work. Most recently, Vice and Ox created DiverseCity TV, an online artist showcase, which includes appearances from many End Of The Weak veterans.

As his long-time partner Kendra Goldhirsch states “what Jason brought to the table was true creativity and passion. Poison Pen jokingly nicknamed him ‘Joe Jackson’ in the studio because he was really focused on bringing out the best in you and getting you locked in with the music. He was the battery in a lot of people’s backs. When he passed, hundreds of family from around the globe people came through to share stories of how Jason inspired or helped them musically and personally.”

Unfortunately Vice Verses passed away before the completion of The Crown but his clever, honest, humorous and at-times melancholy approach to music is all over it.

“Count On Me” is the second single from the forthcoming Vice Verses LP “The Crown“, to be released on June 23rd. Another visual was previously released for the track “Wandering Why” featuring Shabaam Sahdeeq and Big Zoo.

Slaine – “The Things We Can’t Forgive” (Album Review)

This is the 5th full-length album from Boston veteran Slaine. Most notable for being a member of the underground supergroup La Coka Nostra, he released an EP & a total of 4 mixtapes before coming through with his debut album A World with No Skies in 2011 under Suburban Noize Records. This was followed up with The Boston Project in 2013 as well as The King of Everything the year after that, but the man went took a 3-year hiatus following the release of the Slaine is Dead EP in 2016 & returned by dropping the mature One Day in 2019. Fast forward 15 months later, Slaine is kicking off the 3rd act of his career by dropping The Things We Can’t Forgive.

The opener “When the War Ends”, talks about how we’re not prepared for what happens tomorrow over a despondent beat from The Arcitype, who produced almost every song on the album much like 1 Day. The next song “Everything Once” talks about having a lot in life to lose over a tense piano instrumental while the track “Blurry Eyed” talks about his soul being torn over a portentous beat. The song “Revolver” talks about continuously ending up in the same place that he’s already been in over a cacophonous instrumental while the track “Wrath & Pride” with Snak the Ripper finds the 2 talking about going crazy over an ornery beat.

The song “Chasing Ghosts” opens up about a failed relationship over an instrumental with some melancholic acoustic passages while the track “Beautiful” acknowledges those who call him strange over a fiery beat. The song “Not Enough” calls for strength to get through the day over a pessimistic instrumental while the title track talks about this relationship of his being like a mirror over an optimistic-sounding beat from Statik Selektah. The album ends with “Legend of the Fall”, where Slaine talks about ghosts talking to him in his head over a glum piano instrumental.

This is easily Slaine’s most emotional body of work to date & an equally fantastic follow-up to One Day. Once again, the East Coast emcee continues to show maturity through his lyrics & delivery whereas The Arcitype’s dark production goes hand-in-hand with these personal themes.

Score: 8/10

Slaine – “Chasing Ghosts” Ft. Rite Hook (Video)

Slaine is “Chasing Ghosts” of a failed relationship in his stripped-down, new performance video. Evoking stories of the struggles and pain he experienced with a loved one while they both were healing from addiction, “Chasing Ghosts” exemplifies the honesty in Slaine’s writing, and sets the stage for his forthcoming LP, The Things We Can’t Forgive. The video is directed by ILL MANNERED Films, and their vision allows you to fully digest Slaine’s lyrics while also living into the musicianship The Arcitype gave to “Chasing Ghosts.” Check out the visuals and head over to your preferred digital retailer to pre-orderThe Things We Can’t Forgive where “Chasing Ghosts” and the previously released, “Revolver,” are available for ‘instant grat.’ The ten track LP is due out Feb. 12 via AR Classic Records/Perfect Time Music Group.

Q&A With Boston Veteran Slaine

What was your earliest hip hop memory?
I remember kids in my neighborhood in Dorchester break dancing on cardboard in 1983. Turns out one of them was Donnie Wahlberg. I thought that shit was cool & in the following years I would hear Run-D.M.C., but getting a copy of a Beastie Boys tape somebody had dubbed for me was what really sealed the deal. I wrote my first rhyme after listening to License to Ill.

Who’re some of your biggest influences when it comes to making music?
Well the Beasties were my first influence obviously but there were so many after. I was fascinated with all the different styles of rhyming from Slick Rick to N.W.A & Ice Cube particularly. That was just the beginning though because it would become almost an obsession to study the rhyme schemes, storytelling, mic presence and breath control of emcees like Rakim, G Rap, Big Daddy Kane & later Nas, Big, Pac, RZA, B-Real & Everlast…I loved the individuality each guy brought to the music. I also studied the structures they used & learned rules to it and when each guy would break those structures and rules effectively for a purpose. That goes for the craft anyway. My life situations & surrounding would later be my biggest influence & that is what continues to inspire & influence me today.

Where did your stage name originate?
I used to go by Jon Dough. I was given that name because I was pale & looked like a dead man. I came to find out that there were a couple other guys with the same name though. One day I showed up at the Lordz of Brooklyn studio the record & Kaves had a logo drawn up with theme Slaine. Same meaning but it was also an Irish comic book character. It’s been that ever since.

How did you get involved with La Coka Nostra?
DJ Lethal signed me to a production deal in 2003. I had met him through Danny Boy, who I had met in 1999 at CBGB’s in NYC. I went out to LA & crashed on Danny’s couch while we recorded. He had also simultaneously signed Big Left & a kid named Optimus & we kind of naturally started recording together. The name La Coka Nostra started as an inside joke. Danny put together some images & logos on Myspace & it started to catch fire.  Not too long after I was recording, Everlast & Bill came into the picture & it evolved into what it became. That’s the short version anyway.

You’re also an actor as well. Is there anything that made you wanna go into that field also?
I always loved movies. I went to film school for a year in NY to study screenwriting & directing, but was forced to leave at the end of the first year. I kind of abandoned that dream after that as music began to play a big role in my life. 10 years later when the Boston Herald did a story about my music & the formation of La Coka, Ben Affleck saw me in the paper & called me in for an audition for his directorial debut Gone Baby Gone & the rest is history. I guess it was one of those things that was just meant to be.

Your 4th studio album One Day just came out recently. What was it like recording it?
It was a long process over the course of 5 plus years to get my legs underneath me in the studio again after I got sober. I struggled with my confidence for the first time in the studio & started to feel like maybe I had an issue with not having the passion I once did. There was a series of difficult events in my life this year that pushed me to write. And I started to really need to make music again. One Day started coming together in a way that I could not have foreseen. I think it’s my best work to date.

What’re your plans going into the new decade?
Oh I don’t know, man. Just trying to make it through one day at a time. That’s as much as I can handle. When I start planning & worrying about the future & my head gets going, that’s not a great place to be in. The time is now. The time is always now.

Slaine – “One Day” (Album Review)

Slaine is a veteran MC from Boston, Massachusetts most known for being a member of La Coka Nostra. He released an EP & a total of 4 mixtapes before coming through with his debut album A World with No Skies in 2011 under Suburban Noize Records. This was followed up with The Boston Project in 2013 as well as The King of Everything the following year but after dropping his Slaine is Dead EP in 2016, the man is making a comeback & enlisting The Arcitype to produce his 4th full-length album.

Things kick off with “Redemption”, where Slaine addresses his feeling of atonement over a nocturnal instrumental. The next song “Time is Now” talks about living in the moment over a funky boom bap beat while the track “Still Got My Gun” with the Heavy Metal Kings sees Slaine alongside Vinnie Paz & Ill Bill getting bloodthirsty over a funereal boom bap beat. The track “Trick the Trap” vividly depicts the hard knock life over a grimy instrumental while the song “It Catches You” is laced with emotional lyricism backed by a grand instrumental.

The track “Broken Toys” with Apathy & Locksmith sees the 3 talking about clout chasers over an woozy instrumental while the song “Night Will Fall” talks about embracing your shadows over a bleak boom bap beat. “The Feeling I Get” then talks about rising above it all over a sinister instrumental whereas “The Day Before I Die” vents about his inner demons over a settler yet grim instrumental. The track “Can’t Stay the Same” talks about maturity over a boom bap beat with some plink synths while the song “One More Day” gets motivational over an impassioned instrumental. Then there’s the closer “Do What You Love”, where Slaine advises the listener to follow their dreams over a boom bap beat with some strings.

Right here is the comeback that Slaine truly deserves, easily his most mature body of work yet in my opinion. He really details everything that’s been going on in his life throughout the past 5 years & what little features are present add a lot to the context of the album. Grown man rap at it’s finest.

Score: 7/10
