Today in Hip-Hop History: The Fugees’ Second Album ‘The Score’ Turns 25 Years Old!

tumblr p42tu4HqaX1t1yehoo1 640

On this day in 1996, Lauryn Hill, Pras and Wyclef Jean decided that Blunted On Reality would not be the beginning and ending of their illustrious careers and dropped their sophomore, award-winning LP The Score.

Even though the explosive success of their sophomore album was unexpected, resulting in the crew’s breakup, the impact of the project catapulted the careers of all three members. The Score’s apex came during a time when gangsta rap was making its way East, giving any other form of lyricism a narrow lane to success.

The commercial success of the album came from singles such as the bubbly “Fu-Gee-La”, the Hip Hop remake of Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly’, “Ready Or Not” and the album’s Diamond D-produced title track.

Salute to Pras, Clef, Ms. Hill, John Forte, Salaam Remi, Young Zee, Rah Digga and everyone involved in this monumental piece of Hip Hop history!

Today in Hip Hop History: The Fugees Released Their Debut ‘Blunted On Reality’ LP 27 Years Ago

On this date in 1994, crew members Wyclef Jean, Pras, and a young, talented Lauryn Hill otherwise known as The Fugees formulated their first album entitled Blunted On Reality on Hip Hop indie imprint Ruffhouse Records.

Not as familiar to Hip Hop heads as their follow-up smash sophomore album The Score, Blunted On Reality did not receive the commercial success their first go around, yielding only 12,000 copies sold in the first two years. After the release of The Score, that number jumped to 125K.

With Clef’s hands in every aspect of production, there were very few times when the Haitian national wasn’t behind the boards during the production of this album. Other producers include Salaam Remi, Brand X, Khallis Bayyan and even Pras.

Salute to the trio for bringing us this slept on classic!

Fugees Rapper Pras Michel Showed Up To Court In Tyvek Suit Because Of The Coronavirus

He might sit ninety degrees underneath palm trees, but the Fugees rapper Pras Michel isn’t going to be doing so without the proper protection these days as the Coronavirus runs rampant through society.

Yesterday (March 16), Page Six caught Pras walking into Manhattan Family Court draped in a full body Tyvek suit to ensure he didn’t take home the dreaded “‘Rona” that’s already touched Idris Elba, Rudy Gobert, and possibly, Donald Trump (fingers crossed!). Pras found himself cuffed up last week after failing to prove that he had made a $20,000 child support payment to his babymama, Angela Severiano, and yesterday showed up to court ready to prove his innocence while protecting himself. Pras owes Severiano $127K in child support backpay.

I want to first thank NY family court for understanding my situation, but I want all the fake news and everyone to know I’m fully committed to taking care of my son and I Am not nor ever was a deadbeat dad, I flew all the way from LA to NY court to make payments and coincidentally the lawyers nor the mother appeared this morning but that’s neither here nor there we here now. I’m in my Chanel hazmat suit to assure the health safety of both me and people around the court. And thank you everyone who truly support me during these unfortunate times and extremely special shout-out to those who turned their backs on me blessed always the satan you worship hands aren’t long enough to box with my God. Be safe everyone out let’s unite for the sake of humanity and our beloved country. #corona #healthylifestyle #family #unity #haiti

We can’t blame Pras for going all out during the outbreak that’s engulfed America, especially since last week a legal intern who’d been working in that building tested positive for COVID-19.

Though the judge overseeing the case, Carol Goldstein is aware of the pandemic running roughshod through the US, he still took the time to point out that Pras was decked out in protective gear to his lawyers who were phoning in during the proceeding.

“Let me just put on the record,” Goldstein said. “The father came to court head-to-toe in full hazmat gear, full booties, full outfit with gloves, hood and a mask.”

The judge said she was having trouble hearing Michel as he was attempting to explain that he made cash payments over the weekend.

“Should I pull down my scarf?” asked Michel — whose eyes were the only exposed part of his body.

“I think you’d better,” Goldstein responded.

With his full-body armor on, Pras handed over some Moneygram receipts proving that he’d made payments towards his $127,000 balance. Moneygram would then forward the money to another collection agency who’d then give it to his babymama.

Though the Fugees made a killing in the mid 90’s with their album sales and shows, Pras began to struggle with his paper after the feds came for him.

Michel has claimed he fell behind on his $4,800 monthly payments after he was charged with a federal campaign-finance violation and the feds seized $74 million of his money.

He has maintained his innocence in that case.

Least he had enough to copp that suit though. It was missing the plastic face mask, but something’s better than nothing.

Pras Of The Fugees Arrested For Child Support Payment Delinquency

Source: Credit: WENN

Pras’ financial struggles continue to get worse. He was recently booked for nonpayment of his court mandated payments for his son.

Page Six is reporting that The Fugees founder had a bad time when he appeared before a judge earlier on Monday, March 9. According to paperwork the rapper was arrested for failing to prove he made a payment towards his child support agreement. The mother of his child and now ex-girlfriend Angela Severiano claims he owes over $125,000 dollars in payments.

In what has to be the worst struggle move of the year thus far, Michel tried to prove that he sent over some monies via a vague tracking number. But when the tracking number was actually entered into the courier’s system nothing came up. “If I didn’t do it, I wouldn’t say it happened,” Pras tried to explain his way out of the situation. “That’s not what I consider proof. You do not even know what day it was sent,” the judge responded.

It seems Manhattan Family Court Judge Carol Goldstein spotted the very obvious jig and ordered he be handcuffed. She proceeded to address his lawyer Samuel Feldman. “I understand that your client believes that somebody posted the money. The tracking number doesn’t work. He is asking for additional time. I will direct an undertaking of $5,000,” He will be held on a $5,000 bond until a hearing which is scheduled for next week.

Pras claims that the only reason he fell behind on payments is because the feds seized over $74 million dollars of his money when he was charged with campaign-finance violations connected to President Obama’s 2012 re-election. He has pleaded innocent in that case as well but #GoodLuckWithThat.

Today in Hip-Hop History: The Fugees Released Their Second Album ‘The Score’ 24 Years Ago

On this day in 1996, Lauryn Hill, Pras and Wyclef Jean decided that Blunted On Reality would not be the beginning and ending of their illustrious careers and dropped their second, classic LP The Score.

Fugees Rapper Pras Owes $127K In Child Support, Still Has $10M In Watches

Celebrity Sightings in Los Angeles, California - December 13, 2019

While the Fugees will be remembered as one of the greatest Hip-Hop groups of all time, a particular member not named Lauryn Hill or Wyclef Jean continues to be draped in struggle. Reportedly, Pras has failed to pay child support, despite evidence he has millions in assets.

Pras copped to owning a watch collection worth $10M. Yet, he still hasn’t paid the $127,000 in child support he owes.

These aren’t claims being made by investigators, Pras copped to these circumstances in court, per Page Six.

While testifying in Manhattan family court, Pras revealed the worth of his luxury watch collection while explaining why he fell behind on child support payments to his ex, Angela Severiano, 43, for their son, Landon. Mind you, this is after he was charged by the Feds for failing to pay up.

“This last year has been a very tough year for me and I have hit the back of the wall,” Pras reportedly said in court—he is representing himself.

In 2019, Pras revealed he was working on an album for the purpose of paying his child support.

Pras reportedly stopped pay Severiano the $4800 in monthly child support in November 2018. He maintains his cash flow problem is due to the Feds seizing over $70M from him in a separate case and a shady manager allegedly fleecing him for another $20M.

When questioned by Severiano’s lawyer about stunting on Instagram in a Lamborghini and wearing expensive watches, including a limited edition Patek Philippe watch worth over $250,000, Pras said the car was leased and that he had to put his $10M watch collection in safety deposit boxes because he couldn’t afford the insurance.

“I want to apologize to Angela and my son,” said Pras in court. “I want to rectify this ASAP.”

The hearing is scheduled to continue Feb. 10.

Ex-Wife Claims Pras Tried To Hide Money To Lower Child Support

Fifty Shades Of Black Premiere

Source: WENN.com / WENN

Pras’s legal troubles seem to get worse month by month. He is now getting accused of cooking his personal books.

Page Six is reporting that the Fugees member is under even more court scrutiny. His ex-wife Angela Serveriano believes that he has been concealing his income in an effort to get his child support payments reduced. On Tuesday, November 19 her lawyer claimed he has used a “complex web of shell companies” to do so.

In May the “Vocab” rapper claimed federal authorities had seized his money after he was linked to a fraud scheme which compromised of several campaign fund raising international violations. In turn he asked a family court judge to reduce his monthly amount of $4,800 but recently Serveriano’s legal team said not so fast. Attorney Robert Wallack asserts he has discovered a bank account with over a million dollars tied to a company Michel owns. “And, approximately $1 million dollars flowed into and out of this account over a six month period ending in September, just two months ago” he explained.

But to hear Pras’ team tell it all of his money is on ice. Darrell Johnson, his rep, said “the government has tied up $1 billion of his money. We would commit to catching up on payments once the money is released”. When asked about the monies found in the business Johnson had a reasonable explanation. “He is not authorized to pay child support from his business,” Johnson said. “He still had business money. That had nothing to do with his personal earnings.”

Severiano is seeking almost $125,000 in back child support for their son Landon and $60,000 in lawyer fees.

Courts Denies Pras’ Request To Regain $37 Million Lost In Bank Seizure

GQ's 2018 All-Stars Celebration - Arrivals

Source: Sheri Determan/WENN.com / WENN

Pras is learning that the federal courts are the worst type of enemy to have. He is facing the fight of his life in order to have his money returned to him.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the former Fugees star received some unfavorable news over the weekend regarding his ongoing case.

On Thursday, October 17 a D.C. federal judge ruled against the rapper concerning the request to have his money given back to him. Allegedly, the New Jersey native was assisting rogue financier Jho Low in funneling over $37 million dollars from Malaysia to the United States. The catch is Low reportedly stole billions from a Malaysian government sovereign wealth fund with a goal of financing lobbying efforts that would circumvent criminal investigations against him.

In Pras’ original request for dismissal, he claimed that he was merely a member of two companies launched in 2017 that controlled the Morgan Stanley and Chase accounts in question.

“The complaint does not adequately allege that the claimed accounts contain proceeds that are traceable to the alleged offenses. It has not adequately alleged bank fraud, false statements, and conspiracy offenses” the paperwork stated.

In May, the 46-year-old was indicted on charges of conspiracy, fraud and falsifying financial records. He has since pleaded not guilty.

Pras from the Fugees Doesn’t Know if Gina Rodriguez is Down Enough to Say N-Word

Gina Rodriguez can’t seem to keep her mouth shut. It seems like every time we look up, she is saying something offensive to Black people. Poor child, she seems to not get it. Last year, she cut Yara Shahidi off while she was talking to exert herself into a conversation of racial and gender-based discrimination (which by the way we are sure she experiences… she is Latina afterall). She also was called to the carpet for various other conversation, seeming diminishing the Black woman’s struggle- as a plight that Latina women in Hollywood share- She has since apologized. Now, she is getting dragged for saying the n-word.

Why would she do that?

To be fair, she did not say the n-word. She sang it. She sang while rapping along with The Fugees 1996 hit, “Ready or Not.”  Defiantly, she opted out from singing the sanctioned radio friendly version and said the unedited version with the racial derogatory epithet.

Yo Gina… nobody told you that you can’t do what Lauryn does? Ms. Hill does what ever she wants!!! If she says front n-word gives her heebie geebies… they do.. and L Boogie could have said it with the hard “R,” and no one would care… you can’t. It is just that simple.

Well maybe it is not.

Pras from the group The Fugees told TMZ that he is not sure if Rodriguez has a pass into the culture to say the word. The producer said that there are some Latinos who have the distinct privilege to dib and dab in Black culture because they are embedded in it. Who? Pras says he gives those passes to Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B (who considers herself Afro Latina) and Fat Joe (who considers himself Afro Latino).

Check it out:

Fugees’ Pras is Set to Release ‘Elon Musk’ Album to Help Pay Child Support

Former Fugee member, Pras, is hoping to “reinvent” himself with the release of his forthcoming album, Elon Musk. With the release of this collection, he’s hoping to pay off his child support and other legal bills.

The rapper’s lawyer, Judith White, attended a Manhattan Family Court hearing asking the judge to lower his child support payments. He currently pays his ex, Angela Severiano, $4,800 a month for their son, Landon.

”My client is aware that he has to reinvent himself… so that he is able to pay money for this child and he is doing everything in his ability [to do that] such as attempting to release a new album called ‘Elon Musk,’” White told a judge.

“He hit a very hard low and is attempting to bring himself up in the best way he knows, through his art.” White added, “Right now he simply has no income.”

Pras, born Prakazrel Michel, found himself in hot water after allegedly assisting in the laundering of $73 million into the United States in a billion dollar embezzlement scheme connected to Malaysian businessman, Jho Low.

But his ex can care less about his legal woes. Severiano’s lawyer, Robert Wallack, asked the judge to toss Michel’s motion to get his child support lowered since he hasn’t provided financial documents to prove that he actually has no income.

“We have no idea what his income is. We have no idea what the sources of his money are because he has not provided a sworn affidavit,” Wallack said. “How is he traveling? How did he fly to town for this appearance? How did he fly to Washington DC three times in the last two months?” he asked. “How is he supporting his lifestyle? He is releasing a new album.”

“It’s preposterous to sit here and say, through his attorney, that he has no money and no access to money,” Wallack added.

Pras told the Post outside of court that he doesn’t have access to his $100 million fortune because the feds seized $75 million and his manager, who is currently locked up, ran off with the rest and some financial statements.

“I’m doing everything I can. I’m not trying to not pay child support. The best thing I can do is work on my creative,” Michel said. “Hopefully it will be successful and then once it’s successful then everything will be back to normal.”

“For six years we have no problem. I paid [child support]. I am not trying to run away from my responsibilities,” Michel added.

Pras claims he’s currently living with his mother and his loved ones chip in for his cost of living.
