Lawsuit Over Kanye West’s 2010 Track ‘Power’ Sample Dispute Settles Ahead of Trial

Kanye West George Floyd

Bet you didn’t know Kanye West’s hit record “Power” was facing legal scrutiny for a sample. That happens. Often in the music industry, Declan Colgan Music Ltd just settled its lawsuit with Universal Music Group (UMG) over the sample of King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man.” See, Declan Colgan Music Ltd owns the mechanical rights to the song and alleged that UMG had been underpaying streaming royalties from “Power.” They filed the lawsuit in London’s High Court in March 2022. So this was a UK thing, and essentially – the plaintiff won.

Get this: The case was scheduled for trial in the U.K. this week but was settled out of court. And they don’t do a whole lot of suing and settling in the UK. Like, it’s far from the sure everybody energy in America. Anyway, the settlement terms are undisclosed, but Variety reported that their understanding is that Declan Colgan Music Ltd received a payment as part of the agreement. Representatives for both Declan Colgan Music Ltd and UMG declined to comment.

For music heads, King Crimson first released “21st Century Schizoid Man” on their 1969 debut album “In the Court of the Crimson King.” According to the lawsuit, West originally sampled the track without a license for “Power,” whose video has over 140 million views on YouTube since its release in 2010. “Power” was also featured on West’s album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”

Diving deeper, after the release of the song and album, UMG and West’s production company Rock the World signed a deal with Declan Colgan Music Ltd, entitling the company to royalties on the same terms as West. West’s deal with UMG ensured his royalties for both streaming and physical CDs would be comparable. However, Declan Colgan Music Ltd claimed that the streaming royalties they received were not comparable to those for CD sales. Declan Colgan Music Ltd was represented by the Clintons, while UMG was represented by Russells.

Bobby Shmurda Might Be Coming To The Power Universe

bobby shmurda

If 50 Cent is going to do one thing, its give somebody a shot. In May, it was announced that Mo’nique would be joining season 2 of BMF as Goldie. This happened after she came out and revealed the reason why she was blackballed by the industry following her Best Supporting Actress win for Precious at the Academy Awards.

Now it looks like Bobby Shmurda might be joining the Power Universe. In a new interview with HotNewHipHop, Shmurda said that he’s been in talks with 50 about joining the franchise.

“Me and 50 were on a two-hour call like two weeks ago,” Bobby said. “Some talent agents I was talking to, they help 50 with Power and STARZ and all that other sh*t. So you know he wants me to act, and they want me to act, so we just talking about a couple of sh*t right now.”

He added, “He got like 25 shows. You know, he called me like, ‘N*gga, you know I got like 25 shows. You ready to do 26 and 27?’ Like, stop playing, n*gga! You know I want this shmoney, n*gga!”

“Yo, I’m gonna call that n*gga as soon as we get off this interview. Yo 50, they want me in Power!” he said.

Shmurda would join a list of rappers that have made appearances in the Power Universe or are regulars on a series. Method Man, Redman, Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, and recently Freddie Gibbs have all made appearances or are regulars in a Power series.

You can watch the clip of Shmurda here.

50 Cent Threatens to Pull ‘Power’ Universe From Starz: “If I Told You How Much Dumb Sh*t I Deal With Over Here”

50 Cent Reacts to Surgeon Who Saved His Life After He Was Shot Pleading Guilty to Health Care Fraud

50 Cent has been the reason for a lot of the Starz network’s success since the hit show Power debuted in 2014. The show has spawned three spinoffs, and as a result of the Power universe’s success, 50 has been able to greenlight other shows for the network. That doesn’t go to say that Fif has not had his fair share of problems with Starz. In a recent Instagram post, Fif seemed to have had enough and is ready to pull the Power universe from Starz.

“This is me packing my stuff, STARZ Sucks,” Fif captioned an Instagram post with a video of a man packing a suitcase. “My deal is up over here I’m out. They Renewed High town and FORCE is the highest rated show they have it sitting in limbo. If I told you how much dumb shit I deal with over here.”

Fif continued his tirade in multiple IG posts. “Hold my calls i’m traveling, getting the fvck away from STARZ.”

In other posts, he posted pictures of people packing their luggage. He captioned the pictures, calling on executives from his G-Unit Film & Television company, including Anil Kurian, Head of Development for G-Unit Film & Television, to pack their bags.

“Anil get your fvcking bag’s in the car now, we are out of here, take that fvcking sign off the door no more G-unit film and television over here,” he wrote.

In 2018, Fif signed a four-year deal with the network reportedly worth $150 million. As he enters the final ear in his contact, it might be possible we see Fif leave the network and take the Power universe with him.

50 Cent Teases New Music to Drop in September

50 Cent

These days 50 Cent is much more about TV and film projects. After 50 recently shot down any talk of participating in a VERZUZ, the media mogul is showing that there is some love for music left when updating fans on his Street King Immortal album.

Speaking with The Independent, 50 revealed that album will not be released, instead, he will turn to a new collection of music with the aim to drop it in September. “That original version is not [being released], but I’m releasing new music in September,” 50 said.

As far as additional details? There aren’t many. 50 did say he won’t reveal who the features are because he is the “most exciting person” on the album.

While on a press run for Power Book III: Raising Kanan, 50 Cent revealed that VERZUZ will not be in his future.

“A Verzuz battle? Probably not,” 50 said. “We back outside. That was something that happened during the pandemic when we was stuck in the house. Now that we back outside, there’s other things to do. We supposed to be creating new history, not being back there.”

The ‘Power’ Universe Is A Thing & Will Feature FOUR Spinoff Shows

Starz Announces Four 'Power' Spinoffs Following Series Finale

Source: Jamie McCarthy / Getty

Watch out Fast & Furious and Marvel, the Starz hit drama Power will also be expanding its own universe with four spinoff shows.

Starz has been teasing fans up to last night’s (Feb.9) series finale that #PowerNeverEnds and finally pulled the curtain off it’s four new spinoff shows. Now before you proceed any further, we are about to go in spoiler territory, so if you have not seen the end to the James St. Patrick saga, you should stop reading. Everyone else can carry on.

Power’s series finale confirmed that leak revealing Tariq to be the shooter and killing his own father was indeed accurate. In the aftermath of Ghost’s death, we saw Tasha do whatever it takes to keep her son out of jail. Her plan, of course, involved framing someone else for the murder of her ex-husband, so she wound up choosing her new boo, Quentin. Everything looked like it was going to work out smoothly for Tasha and Riq, but unfortunately for her, Q had a solid tight alibi. He went to get a Red Bull at a diner and was on the surveillance footage making his purchase.  So instead of Q being locked away forever, Tasha was the one who made the ultimate sacrifice for her son so he can live his life and go onto college.

Once the credits finished rolling, we were treated to a flashback of a young Ghost, Tommy, and Angela Valdez back in high school, giving us a brief glimpse of how the story of two doomed lovers began. Starz wasn’t finished though, we got a small trailer of Power Book II: Ghost which arrives this summer and serves as a direct sequel to Power and will see the return of Riq, Tasha, Saxe and the introduction of newcomers Method Man and Mary J. Blige.

The other three spinoffs will Power Book III: Raising Kanan, which will see the return of 50 Cent as Kanan, Power Book IV: Influence which will focus on Larenz Tate’s character Councilman Tate ( who asked for that?). Last but certainly not least, Power Book V: Force starring Joesph Sikora as Tommy Egan.

Looks like we haven’t heard the last of “Big Rich Town’ yet, are you guys excited about the upcoming slate of Power shows? Or do you feel Starz is beating a dead horse? Let us know in the comment section below.

Starz Announces Additional Spin-Offs After ‘Power’ Finale

The last episode of Power has aired and we have seen the end of Ghost and the original story that we have all grown to love. But that is not the end of the world that Power exists in, Starz has revealed all of the series that will branch from the original.

The upcoming series are apart of the Power Universe and will begin with Power Book II: Ghost, which will star Michael Rainey Jr. returning as Tariq, alongside Natauri Naughton, Mary J. Blige and Method Man.

The additional shows that are being created include Power Book III: Raising Kanan, Power Book IV: Influence, and Power Book V: Force, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Influence will detail governor candidate Rashad Tate’s mission to become a large force in New York, Raising Kanan will be a 1990s prequel story of Kanan Stark and Force will be on Tommy’s trek to California but the struggle to cut away from New York City.

“In television history, only a select few shows have inspired four consecutive series extensions, launched into active production and development at the same time,” Starz’s president and CEO, Jeffrey Hirsch, said when talking about the spinoff series. “These new and exciting chapters will continue the journey of some of Power’s most controversial characters while featuring a growing ensemble of complex, distinct characters along with the high-octane drama that set Power in a class of its own.”
