‘New York Undercover’ Returns With Original Cast Members

Detectives Williams and Torres are back!

According to multiple reports, the Fox show that pioneered street wise drama alongside the right side of the law with a twist of Hip Hop and R&B returns to television screens after 20 years.

The 90s police show New York Undercover starred Michael DeLorenzo as “Eddie Torres” and Malik Yoba as “J. C. Williams”, two New York City undercover detectives, along with Lauren Velez, who played Lt. Nina Moreno, who was Torres’ on-again-off-again girlfriend.

New York Undercover ended in controversy 20 years ago amid cast demands for more money. Yoba was particularly vocal about the disrespect he received from Wolf, but in Hollywood, all is forgiven when people can reunite for profit.

Yoba will now play the head of the unit and the show will follow detectives Nat Gilmore and Melissa Ortiz, though casting has yet to be announced for either role. DeLorenzo’s character can’t return to the show, as he was killed off in the third season.

NYU is again produced by Dick Wolf, who oversees the Chicago Med, Fire and PD franchises, which are a ratings boon for NBC. The reboot of NYU will premiere on ABC sometime this year.

90’s Hip-Hoppers were delighted to learn that the Hip-Hop themed cop show New York Undercover was going to get rebooted for the new generation and now we have even more reason to look forward it’s debut as an NYU OG will return with the show.

Deadline is reporting that 90’s heartthrob Malik Yoba will indeed be reprising his role as Detective J.C. Williams but this time around he’ll be overseeing the next generation of Hip-Hop cops instead of playing the streets as an undercover himself. We can’t state how excited we are with this latest development. No word yet on whether or not his partner in crime Detective Eddie Torres (Michael DeLorenzo) will be asked to join the reboot but we feel like he can use that mainstream exposure these days.

Malik Yoba meanwhile has kept his name buzzing as he’s been making the sitcom rounds with roles in EmpireThe Last O.G., God Friended Me, and Designated Survivor.

So how y’all feeling about Malik Yoba returning to New York Undercover? Let us know in the comments below.

90’s Hip-Hop Cop Show ‘New York Undercover’ Getting A Reboot?

Looks like a 90’s favorite Hip-Hop cop drama is about to get rebooted for this next generation. New York Undercover may be coming back.

Deadline is reporting that ABC is interested in reviving Fox’s hit show of the 90’s which starred heartthrob Malik Yoba and Michael Jackson background “Bad” dancer Michael DeLorenzo. Even though police have always been seen in an unfavorable light in Hip-Hop, the Dick Wolf and Kevin Arkadie show was a hit amongst the culture thanks to its Hip-Hop theme and it being the first police show starring people of color.

Now it seems like ABC is prepping to take Fox’s old property and give it new life. According to the exclusive report, Hand of God creator Ben Watkins has been tapped to pen the reboot but there isn’t any word on whether or not Yoba and DeLorenzo will be asked to reprise their roles of Detective J.C. Williams and Detective Eddie Torres. It would be dope to see them come back in supporting roles as captains or something while some new jacks take over the starring roles, but we’ll leave that to the pros.

I hear ABC and New York Undercover‘s original network, Fox, were interested in the revival. As a procedural, New York Undercover can be reinvented with new characters and cast. Even the original series rebooted itself in the fourth and final season with a largely new cast joining Yoba and Season 2 addition Lauren Velez as the other series regulars exited.

What do y’all think? Can New York Undercover thrive in today’s current Hip-Hop culture or is it something that should be left to the ages? Let us know.
