Today in Hip Hop History: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony Dropped Their Third LP ‘Art Of War’ 26 Years Ago

tumblr 8c176785a2a94e32a5bc09bf6329cfd0 7776d9ac 1280

On this day in Hip Hop history, we celebrate a quarter-century of one of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony’s most popular pieces of work, The Art of War. As a follow-up to the group’s most successful album E. 1999 Eternal, The Art of War did everything but disappoint.  The album kept the group’s momentum up, claiming the top spot on both the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop charts. This album even capitalized on the double LP trend of the 90s in a way that was cohesive and unsaturated.

Originally rumored to be titled DNA Level C or “Cleveland” spelled backward, this album took its current title and became a declaration of war against rappers whom Bone Thugs believed to be imitators of the style they created. Some of the groups and artists targeted were Three 6 Mafia, Twista, Crucial Conflict, and Tommy Wright III. Through this project, Bone Thugs looked to cement themselves as the only soulful east coast gangsta rappers in the industry.

Commercially this album was a great success, selling 349,000 copies in its first week on shelves and going on to be certified quadruple platinum only one year after its release. The album’s two singles were also big hits with “If I Could Teach the World” reaching #27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Look Into My Eyes” peak at #4 on the same chart.

Fat Joe Recounts Uniting BTNH And Biggie For “Notorious Thugs” Collaboration

Screen Shot 2022 03 11 at 12.24.13 AM

In a classic #ThrowbackThursday post on IG, BX legend Fat Joe posted a reflection of himself, Diddy, Lil Kim, Notorious B.I.G. and Bone Thugs N Harmony shortly before the timeless studio session between the King of New York and the Cleveland quartet.

Posted on the 25th anniversary of Christopher “Biggie Smalls” Wallace’s untimely death, Joe captioned the flick, “Fun fact i got a call from BIG and he said joe i need your boys BONE on a song,” adding, “I said say no more BONE N BIGGIE BONE N BIGGIE. I love you BIG we will never forget you 25 years later we will never forget THE KING OF NY.”

Produced by then Bad Boy Hitman and now reality star, Stevie J, the song “Notorious Thugs” on the Life After Death album had a hidden gem. In it, Biggie maintained that his beef with “You Know Who” was really not what everyone pumped it up to be. Which was cool because at the time Bone was known to be close to ‘Pac (who the statement was made about) and had performed on a song earlier.

ICYMI: Krayzie Bone Says the VERZUZ Fight Between Bone Thugs and Three 6 Mafia Made Them Look Like “A**holes”

attachment Verzuz Fight

Krayzie Bone spoke about the Bone Thugs-N-Harmoney VERZUZ battle with Three 6 Mafia and he thinks the whole ordeal was nuts. HipHopDX caught up with Krayzie and he revealed he was upset with his team’s song choice and was focused on that when Bizzy Bone and their opponent for the night got into a rift.

“I didn’t hear none of the conversation they were even saying on the … I thought Bizzy was just about to grab the mic and talk some shit like everybody else was doing,” Krayzie said. So I’m back there and I see all the security guards rushing the stage, while I’m walking toward the back of the stage. Our security is running from backstage to the stage. I turn around, and everybody is on the stage. I’m like, ‘What the fuck is going on?’ And I’m standing there, pissed.”

Krayzie said while it all unfolded he was in the back thinking “we look like assholes on national fucking TV right now.

Back in December, Three 6 Mafia icon DJ Paul reflected on the moment while visitng FOX SOUL’s The Mix and had details regarding the scuffle. DJ Paul spoke to the tension of the night but also knew that a fight was possible.

“The beef with us and Bone was just a big misunderstanding for 26 years. I respect Bone,” DJ Paul said. “I kinda knew it was coming. He [Bizzy Bone] kind of told us on social media when he was talking about how it was going to be.”

When discussing the battle DJ Paul was asked if he would change anything about it, his response was, “It was perfect. I love the way everything happened.”

You can see the moment here.

Swizz Beatz is Fed Up With Some Artists Participating in ‘Verzuz’ Battles

swizz beatz

Verzuz battles started off as something that happened over Instagram live, and have grown to be full-scale events that happen in person in arenas and stadiums. Needless to say, the bag has definitely gotten bigger, and with that, there’s more on the line.

Swizz Beatz seems to be frustrated with some artists that come to the battles and don’t take it seriously. The legendary producer and VERZUZ co-founder aired out his frustrations with some artists in Instagram comments. He noted that some artists come drunk and late to the event and some who haven’t performed in over 20 years charge them five times more than they do “non black shows.”

“Ain’t did a show in 23 summers and want to charge us like they sold out stadium prices ! Talking about yesterdays price is not today price sh*t,” Swizz wrote. “Talking bout we not going on stage until my homie call from Rikers to do the prayer… New rule if you don’t start on time you don’t get paid on time !!! Verzuz is not free !! They charge us 5x they do non black shows… Culture.”

However, it wasn’t clear who Swizz was talking about. Some might have thought Swizz was taking aim at Bizzy Bone or other members of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony after a fight broke out on stage at the latest VERZUZ battle between them and Three 6 Mafia. Bizzy Bone then took to Instagram to exclude his crew from the ones Swizz took problem with, saying nobody showed up drunk and they said their own prayer before going on stage.
