Lil Nas X Considers Changing Name Out of Respect for Nas

Lil Nas X’s name is everywhere lately, but he may be looking for a new one.

The “Old Town Road” rapper revealed that he is thinking of changing his stage name in response to some backlash from those who think he’s disrespecting his namesake Nas. “nas is a legend and i never meant any disrespect by my stage name,” the Atlanta rapper tweeted on Tuesday (April 23). “i actually might change it in the future.”

Most of his fans urged him to keep his name, while others thought it was disrespectful and should be dropped.

During an interview with Beats 1 (via HotNewHipHop), he revealed how he came up with the name Lil Nas X. “It’s been my internet alias for a minute,” he said. “The X wasn’t included at first. It was just Lil Nas. It was Lil Nas because when I first started rapping I wasn’t as serious so it was like, ‘Okay, every rapper’s name is starting with Lil lately.’ So I kind of got stuck with it. I added the X later on after I was more serious. It would stand for the amount of years, I felt, until I’m at the status where I’m considered legendary.”

The 20-year-old rapper is currently sitting on top of the charts with his breakout single “Old Town Road,” which remains No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a third week. A video for the remix with Billy Ray Cyrus was recently shot. “old town road remix will have the video of the year!!” he tweeted.

A remix with Young Thug is also on the way, while his debut album is due this summer.
