Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West came “this” close to headlining the upcoming Coachella music festival. New reports have emerged on what ultimately nixed his involvement in the 2019 event.
According to reports, Ye pulled out after learning the festival wouldn’t build him a customized dome.
On Jan. 1, just two days before Coachella co-founder Paul Tollett was set to announce Kanye West as one of the stars headlining the desert festival, West sprung a last-minute surprise on the concert promoter. Instead of performing on the main Coachella stage, West asked Tollett to construct a giant, custom-built dome in the middle of the festival grounds. The dome would be designed by West collaborator and set designer John McGuire. (Billboard)
Despite not pulling through, Ye’s G.O.O.D. Music president Pusha-T and Kid Cudi are expected to perform at Coachella.
Initially, reports emerged about rap star Kanye West pulling out of Coachella over a set design dispute.
Kanye made it clear he wouldn’t perform on a traditional 60×40 foot stage because it was “artistically limiting.” Goldenvoice, which produces the festival, would not allow the stage to be altered or removed for Ye’s performance. In the end, we’re told Kanye passed. A Kanye source says after the Saint Pablo tour, Ye wants to give groundbreaking performances. As you know, the Saint Pablo stage moved over the crowd, and Kanye loved it. (TMZ)
Last fall, speculation developed about Kanye, Gambino and singer Justin Timberlake getting recruited for the music festival.
