Raekwon Set to Open Cannabis Lounge in Newark

image

Words by: Brandon Simmons

Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon has a new business in Newark, New Jersey.

Located at 799-805 Broad Street, Raekwon has opened a cannabis lounge.  The lounge is called Hashstoria, a mashup of hashish and Astoria.  The dispensary where the cannabis comes from is in Astoria, a city in Oregon.  Hashtoria already has three locations, making the four floors of the Newark location its fourth.

The New Jersey’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission ruled that cannabis users are allowed to use cannabis where they purchased it, a big reason why the Hashstoria wanted the location.  New Jersey is now one of eight states to approve this new law.

Even though the 53-year-old rapper hails from Staten Island, New York, Raekwon is familiar with The Garden State.  Their biopic, Wu-Tang: An American Saga” was filmed in downtown Newark as well as other places in New Jersey.  As of now, there is no set date on when the lounge will open.

Method Man Battles Math Hoffa On ‘Legends Only’

Legendary recording artist, Wu-Tang Clan member and hip-hop icon Method Man has somewhat surprisingly entered the modern era of acapella battle rap, taking on infamous Brooklyn battle rap legend Math Hoffa. It appears this Method Man vs. Math Hoffa battle is the first battle in the appropriately titled ‘Legends Only’ battle rap series produced by Hoffa himself, building off the broad success Math Hoffa has developed through his popular ‘My Expert Opinion’ video podcast series with both Ms. Fit and Knowledge Tha God of Hip Hop Is Real that has been gaining significant mainstream attention. Watch the below video by Hoffa to get a full detailed breakdown of released information to date and stay tuned to MathHoffaTV as the Method Man battle is set to drop without notice at random this week.

With the Math Hoffa vs. Method Man battle already mysteriously filmed, edited, and ready to drop, hip hop and battle rap fans alike are looking forward to this battle dropping independently on MathHoffaTV. With filming rumoured to have been co-produced by Avocado of LA’s Ruin Your Day (RYD) collective, selected industry insiders have already seen the acapella battle and it may prove as the ultimately merging point between mainstream commercially successful hip hop artists and battle rappers.

Method Man has recently been a well-received judge on SMACK/URLTV on live-streaming platform Caffeine for the Ultimate Madness 1 & 2 battle rap tournaments and has long been intertwined with the modern era of battle rap, even collaborating on music with Hoffa back in late 2011 on their track ‘Double Barrell’ – watch below.

The next instalment of ‘Legends Only’ is already in the works and equally under wraps with possible further names potentially that may make an appearance on ‘Legends Only’ by Math Hoffa include Eminem, Lloyd Banks, Lupe Fiasco, N.O.R.E. of CNN / Drink Champs, Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9, Nick Cannon, Cassidy, Snoop Dogg amongst a wealth of potential others.

Math Hoffa is also set to battle Chubby Jag on his re-return to battle rap on the groundbreaking Rare Breed Entertainment (RBE) platform later this month on Saturday 29 August at the private, invite-only event ‘Mask On’. That event is also set to feature Bigg K vs. Mackk Myron, O Red vs. Chef Trez, Snake Eyez vs. Heavy Half and Floss Da Boss vs. Truth Watson by ARP and Co. Looks like 2020 may be an even bigger year for both Math Hoffa and battle rap than the groundbreaking and high-watermark that was last year.

Method Man Has Not Cursed On A Verse In 5+ Years. Here’s Why (Audio)

In the last five years, Method Man was a driving force on Wu-Tang Clan’s The Saga Continues album. He also released two installments of his Meth Lab series with Hanz On. Looking to 2020, Iron Lung is already slated to be teaming up with longtime affiliate Streetlife for a collaborative LP. However, as the decade comes to a close, Method Man insists that he’s over cursing in his raps. A few years back, the Wu wordsmith explained that change from the ’90s and 2000s. “That’s how I write ’em now,” Meth’ told Ambrosia For Heads in mid-2015 near the 30:00-mark. It was in promotion of the first Meth Lab compilation. “I haven’t cursed in my rhymes since Wu-Massacre.” “So if you hear a rhyme where I curse, just know that’s before [2010’s] Wu-Massacre. Listen to the whole Wu album, A Better Tomorrow—not one curse word [from me].” That was true on The Saga Continues, The Meth Lab Season 2: The Lithium, and other recent feature spots alongside Black Moon, Ghostface Killah, E-40, and Bun B & Statik Selektah. As Tical Turns 25, Method Man Brings The Pain To A Havoc Beat (Video) Expounding on that decision, Method Man said, “I just wanted to separate myself from the pack, for one. For two, I challenged myself to see if I could do it. I was writin’ for somebody, and they didn’t want curse words in the record. So I was sayin’, “You know what? Let’s see if I can write something hard without putting curse words in it, and don’t tell nobody and see if they notice.” Meth’, who spent part of his upbringing on Long Island, is not the only lyrical legend from the area who has spoken openly in recent years about trying to reduce the profanity. Rakim recently told The Breakfast Club about his motivation to keep it cleaner than some of his peers. Black Moon Make Their Return And Bring Method Man With Them (Audio) “I got away with a couple,” Rakim admitted to Charlamagne Tha God. “In the beginning, I would go home [and] make a tape, and [my parents] would probably be the first ones to hear it. I found myself trying to please them; ‘I wonder what my moms or my pops gonna say when they hear this.'” Rakim says he shifted his writing given [that] circumstance. “I didn’t put the cursing in, for that reason. In the beginning, it was just like subconsciously. Like, I wasn’t trying not to curse, it’s just that I didn’t curse…because I knew if it came out right [my parents were] gonna be my biggest fans.” For Rakim, his parents were instrumental in his creative gifts. “All my insight, all my musical background came straight from them. I think my moms gave it to me genetically, and I think my pops instilled it me because he loved me so much.” LL Cool J, DMX, Redman & Method Man Explain The Real Definition Of A Freestyle #BonusBeat: In honor of Tical‘s 25th-anniversary, DJ Philthy Rich made a tribute mix to Meth’s 1994 debut:

Wu-Tang’s Method Man talks His Favorite New Rappers

Method Man is experiencing a renaissance in his career.

With his hit shows, celebrity battle rap show Drop the Mic (produced by The Late Late Shows host James Corden) still buzzing and the new Hulu series, Wu-Tang: An American Saga giving the community their entire life, this is year has kept in front of new Hip-Hop lovers more than ever. Contributing to this surge was last year’s 25th anniversary for his group, Wu-Tang Clan. Young people are taking note.

Even battle rap hot shot, Ill Will tapped him to co-sign his new song, “G.O.A.T.”

He also can be heard killing it on The Source‘s Unsigned Hype Blimes’ “Hot Damn.”

He also killed the summer with Teyana Taylor’s remix, “Gonna Love Me” with his Wu-Tang brothers, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah.

So it is clear young people (artists in particular) know and respect him… but does he know and respect them? In a time when so many rappers from a certain generation have no clue who is hot and “hate on those young cats,” Method Man steps up and proves how invested he is in the culture.

Recently, he let Knowledge from Hip-Hop Is Real know who he considers are the top battle rappers (this current generation) right now.

He mentioned that he thinks that Cali’s Geechi Gotti is fire. He also did not hesitate to also shout out Gotti’s EFB partner and The Source’s 2017 Unsigned Hype Alum, Rum Nitty as one of his top emcees in the culture. Tay Roc made the list, stating he will always be on the list. He further named Nu Jerzey Twork. But then Meth did what so many people who really know lyricism do: He paused because there are just too many “nasty” emcees to limit his list to five.

“There are so many though. I don’t even like doing this. Some people will say ‘Why didn’t you name me?”  But then with a little urging, he submitted Norfolk’s Ave, saying “He could be the best.”
