‘Boondocks’ Fans Want Jennifer Lewis to Portray Grand Dad’s Sister

The Boondocks is gearing up for a reboot and one thing is for certain, the series will never be the same without Grandad.

John Witherspoon portrayed the beloved character, but he was called home at the end of October at the age of 77.

Fans mourned Witherspoon and the characters he brought to life on the big and small screens, especially Grandad. However, a Twitter user came up with a solution that everyone seemingly agrees with. “Picture it: Granddad passes away in The Boondocks opening of the 5th season and the boys are sent to live with Granddad’s sister: played by Jenifer Lewis,” he wrote. “She’s the ONLY one I can think to keep that same energy.” His tweet began to circulate on social media platforms and it seemed as if the idea was widely accepted among fans.

Lewis caught wind of the tweet and it looks like she’s down to do it. “Thank you one and all. I’ll check into this,” she responded. “It would be fun. I miss my John Witherspoon. He gave us so much so much love and laughter y’all.”

Would y’all be here for this swap?

John Witherspoon Passes Away at Age 77

A Black Hollywood icon, John Witherspoon, suddenly passed away in his home at the age of 77.

“It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working men in show business, died today at his home in Sherman Oaks at the age of 77,” Witherspoon’s family said in a statement to Deadline. “He is survived by his wife Angela, and his sons JD, Alexander, and a large family. We are all in shock, please give us a minute for a moment in privacy and we will celebrate his life and his work together. John used to say ‘I’m no big deal’, but he was huge deal to us.”

The Detroit native started his career as a stand-up comedian. In the 1970’s he landed his debut TV role in The Jazz Singer. He also appeared in a couple of films like Hollywood Shuffle, Boomerang, Vampire in Brooklyn, The Ladies Man and Fakin’ Da Funk.

But he’s best known for his role as Craig’s father in the Friday franchise. He also played Pops in The Wayans Bros. and voiced Grandpa Freeman in the Boondocks series, which was scheduled to be rebooted.

John Witherspoon still did comedy up until his death and had upcoming dates scheduled.

The Inner Glow That Lets You Know: Twitter Reacts To ‘The Boondocks’ Return

The Boondocks on HBO Max

Source: WarnerMedia / HBO Max

The Boondocks will be returning to the HBO Max streaming service late next year, which feels like a lifetime away. However, Twitter has joined together in loud celebration that Aaron McGruder’s visually and socially stirring series is making a welcome return.

The Boondocks last aired on network television in 2014 for its fourth season, which some might remember did not have any involvement from the show’s original creator. For the retooling of the series, first announced over the summer in a partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, Uncle Ruckus rises to power in Woodcrest County, Maryland with Huey and Riley Freeman taking on the tyrannical leader.

Via Twitter, excitement over the reboot, which was ordered for two seasons, was pretty high. And not for nothing, we hope that Asheru’s stellar theme song makes a return as well along with the talented Regina King.

‘The Boondocks’ Is Back, Gets 2 Season Order On HBO Max

The Boondocks on HBO Max

The collective priors of the woke contingent of the Black Twitterverse have been answered—The Boondocks is back, back. Today (September 18), HBO announced the return of the beloved series with a 2-season order of episodes that kicks off with a 50-minute special in Fall 2020.

Wait, Fall 2020, though?

HBO Max has ordered two reimagined seasons of 24 episodes each that follows the lives of Riley, Huey and Granddad Freeman along with an assortment of characters. Also worth noting is that all 55 episodes of the original series of the Aaron McGruder-created series will be available as well.

The Boondocks was a revolutionary series that sparked conversations on hot button issues and brought dark subjects into the light with episodes like ‘The Trial of Robert Kelly’, ‘The Fundraiser’ and ‘The Story of Gangstalicious’,” said Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer, HBO Max via a statement. “Aaron is a gifted visionary whose unique style of storytelling is a welcome voice and we are elated The Freemans are making their thugnificent comeback on HBO Max.”

Also, Aaron McGruder is on board as showrunner and will serve as an executive producer.

“There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today,” said McGruder via a statement. “It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun.”

There has to be an episode about Tekashi69, for the culture. Lastly, Regina King has to come back—she’s essential now.
