Killer Mike is stepping into the podcast world with the debut of Conversate with Killer Mike on August 13. Co-hosted by longtime friend and Outkast DJ Cutmaster Swiff, the show…
Could you believe Andre 3000 didn’t want to be on “So Fresh, So Clean?”
Sleepy Brown spoke with SPIN, revealing that the historic single was almost a Big Boi solo song because 3 Stacks wasn’t feeling it.
“The funny thing is André didn’t really like it at first. André didn’t like that record,” Brown shared. “It wasn’t like he didn’t think it was good — it just wasn’t matching where he was. We really just did it for Big.
“We knew André was moving to something else, but we knew on that album it needed that hood theme. When Big heard it, he loved it. We thought Dre was going to be happy with it at first, but he really wasn’t.”
What convinced 3000? Bass player Preston Crump inspired the legend to drop off the “coolest motherfunkers on the planet” line.
On this date, at the turn of the century, Big Boi and Andre 3000 released their fourth album, Stankonia, on the Laface/Arista imprint.
Following up on their successful Aquemini LP, Outkast set out to challenge themselves creatively and that they did; Stankonia ended up being one of the duo’s most successful commercial albums, going gold in the first week after its release.
Some of the album’s leading singles include the baby mama drama anthem “Ms. Jackson,” the rhythmic hook of the catchy “So Fresh So Clean,” and the timely and socially conscious “Bombs Over Baghdad (B.O.B.).” With solid production from Organized Noize and Earthtone III, this album is one of the South’s most impactful projects.
Salute to Organized Noize, 3 Stacks, Big Boi, and their entire team for bringing us such a timeless Hip-Hop classic!
Ever sinceDJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s He’s The DJ, I’m The Rapper in 1988, the double LP has become a Hip Hop staple. The sheer volume and intensity of work that goes into such an album have made and broken many a rapper in the past. When executed correctly, the double LP can be a timeless masterpiece, compiling all aspects of the artist into something to be appreciated for all time. On this day in Hip Hop history, OutKast released Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, giving the world one of the greatest and most successful double albums recorded.
As the second Hip Hop album (and first by males) to be awarded a Grammy for Album of the Year, this project’s accolades speak for themselves. A Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit sat on each of the LPs discs(“The Way You Move” and “Hey Ya”), 11 million copies were sold in the United States alone, and the album appeared on 19 top music charts across the globe. This is a unique album.
Achievements aside, the album itself sets it so far apart from anything that has come out before it. Essentially, this project is two solo albums crafted independently and packaged together. And unlike any of OutKast’s other work, it allows the fans to experience Big Boi and Andre 3000’s artistry distinctly. The two discs have very little in common, much like the surface appearance of the tandem, yet compliment each other perfectly.
Disc one, Speakerboxxx, comes from the mind of Antwon Patton akaBig Boiaka Daddy Fat Sacks aka Lucious Leftfoot and is a spot-on representation of his ice-cold pimpin’. Much to the tone of Southernplayalisticaddilacmuizk, Speakerboxxx took things back to bass knocking, trunk rattlin’ “Ghetto Muzik” sound that gave OutKast its starts. Tracks like “The Way You Move” and “Ghetto Muzik” exemplify the unique marching band-inspired pre-trap Atlanta sound that OutKast created.
Disc two, The Love Below, is Andre 3000 contribution and serves as a cathartic experience from the mind of a hopeless romantic. In contrast to disc one, this album is all the way left, pushing Hip Hop’s boundaries nearly to their breaking point. Dre was in rare form on this album, giving the world a peek at a new side of him. On theme with its title, The Love Below delves into a realm that Hip Hop rarely earnestly approaches, love. Entirely produced by Andre, the album’s alternative inspiration allows for a unique style of Hip Hop ballad to be created on almost every track. There is very little actual rapping on this half of the album.
To say Speakerboxxx/The Love Below did a lot for Hip Hop is the wildest of understatements. When the south was only good for club-bangers, OutKast continuously provided introspective depth with their work. This project challenged the standard of subjects that can be rapped about. Andre 3000 single-handled brought a new Prince-like style of androgyny to the rap game, unintentionally paving the way for artists today like Young Thug and Mykki Blanco. Its influence makes this album easily the most important Hip Hop LP to come out of the Dirty South.
On this date in 1996, Big Boi and Andre 3000 came together to release their second album ATLiens on R&B icons’ LA Reid and Babyface’s LaFace Records. On this album, the Southern playalistic duo expands their subject matter from just their urban tales from the hood to explorations of extraterrestrial life on Planet Earth.
Outkast’s most recognizable aspect of their creativity is their hooks, which is almost a trademark for the entire Organized Noize family, but really took root as Big Boi and Andre 3 Stacks signature sound on this album, with songs like “ATLiens” and “Elevators(Me And You)” spearheading the success of this album.
The commercial success of the album was proof of the duo’s ability to relay their morphing sounds to their listeners, with the ATLiens project selling one million copies in three months and reaching double platinum in less than seven years.
Shout out to Andre 3000, Big Boi, and the rest of the Organized Noize crew for this timeless piece of Hip Hop History!
Rapper/actor and member of the legendary Hip-Hop duo Outkast, Mr. Andre 3000 turns 49 today!
Andre Benjamin is known for his eclectic style and flows, from his start with the Dungeon Family to his movie roles in films like Idlewild and Jimi: All Is by My Side. He has become a household name as a solo artist as well as part of a legendary group and he continues to evolve with the times. Happy Birthday Mr. 3000 from TheSource.com!
On this day in Hip-Hop history three decades ago, OutKast, the duo that helped pioneer the map-making of southern hip-hop, released their debut classic LP, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.
This Dungeon Family masterpiece recorded by Andre 3000 and Big Boi paved the way for Atlanta and the rest of the Dirty South to have their unique voice in Hip Hop. Before this album, few hit records were coming from anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line. Peaking at #20 on the Billboard 200 and being certified platinum less than a year after its release, this album’s achievements speak for themselves.
This project was produced entirely by OutKast and Organized Noize, like none before. Its sound is perfectly described as Southern rap. Everything about this album screams Atlanta, from the dialect to the instruments used to the references. The smooth blues and marching band-influenced beats blend with Big Boi and Andre 3000’s flows, creating something new that rippled the tide of an industry saturated with G-Funk or New York Hip Hop.
This album was immensely successful both commercially and critically. It peaked at #20 on the Billboard 200 and #3 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop charts. This album was also the reason OutKast received the Best Newcomer Award at the 1995 Source Awards, which, as we all know, was met with controversy. Regardless of the haters, this album came at the beginning of the careers of two rappers who changed the game forever.
On this day in 1975, Andre Antwon Patton, best known as Big Boi, one-half of the legendary ATL duo Outkast, was born. Patton has morphed into one of this generation’s biggest rappers/actors.
With four Outkast albums and four solo full-length releases of his own, Big Boi is recognized as one of the driving forces that helped spotlight A-Town as a Hip Hop powerhouse city. His acting career rivals that of any of ATL’s pioneers except his partner Andre 3000, with appearances in the movies ATL, Idlewild, and Who’s Your Caddy as well as appearances on the sitcoms such as King Of The Hill.
Happy born day to Sir Lucius! I wish him many more from The Mind Squad!
