“Love & Rockets 3.16: The Emancipation” Reflects on MURS’ Illustrious Career (Album Review)

MURS is a 47 year old MC & singer/songwriter from Los Angeles, California notable for being a former member of the alternative hip hop outfit the Living Legends. He also has a dozen solo LPs under his belt excluding the 6 he has with 9th Wonder of The Soul Council, with my favorites being his Definitive Jux Records debut …The End of the Beginning & the Strange Music-backed A Strange Journey into the Unimaginable fully produced by MIKE SUMMERS a.k.a. Seven. Now signed to Mello Music Group, the west coast veteran’s closing the book on his solo career with a trilogy chapter of the Love & Rockets series.

“Silverlake Rec League” begins the end by talking about friends, gym life, struggles & triumphs over an experimental trap instrumental whereas “Enjoy” fully displays the endearment he has towards his wife. “Chopper (ThisIsNotAnAntiPoliceSongThisIsAnAntiPoliceHelicopterSong)” featuring Reverie finds the 2 taking shots at the LAPD for fucking up their party while “This Ain’t That” thunderously talks about being despised forever selling his soul.

Moving on from there, “F.A.M.I.L.Y. (Forever Always Motherfucker I Love You)” works in a flute-tinged boom bap instrumental finding community within his fanbase leading into “Flowers 4 will.i.am” showing his appreciation towards the Black Eyed Peas frontman. “Ga$ Prices” talks about the cost of refilling gas in your car being higher than WWE Hall of Famer Snoop Dogg just before “Beauty in the Streets” jazzily takes us through the belly of the beast.

“OCH” starts the final leg of Love & Rockets 3.16: The Emancipation by responding to those saying freedom ain’t free while “Lightsabers & Black Forces” featuring Chace Infinite shows their appreciation for the Star Wars franchise owned by The Walt Disney Company subsidiary Lucasfilm. The closer “Stylus Groove” caps everything off with a drumless beat looking back at these past 3+ decades.

Reflecting on a storied career marked by honesty as well as humor & razor-sharp lyricism, Love & Rockets 3.16: The Emancipation finds MURS in peak form spitting with the urgency of an artist laying his legacy in stone. Celebrating a legacy built on raw truth & relentless passion, the west coast veteran crafts a worthy sendoff to the illustrious mark he’s left on the music industry filled with introspection & storytelling.

Slug + Murs Return as Felt With New Album “Felt 4 U”

Today,  Felt—the iconic hip-hop supergroup comprised of Murs and Slug (of Atmosphere)—drops a surprise album: Felt 4 U. The duo signaled a triumphant return from an eleven-year hiatus earlier this week with the standalone single “Name In Ya Mouth” before following up with a full-length album produced by Ant of Atmosphere.

With all the core elements that established Felt as a cult favorite still in place, Felt 4 U offers a fresh perspective from two virtuosic lyricists whose talents have only matured in the years since their last album, Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez, was released. Nestled among the new album’s twelve tracks are high-powered guest features—a first for Felt—including appearances from BlimesThe GrouchAesop Rock, and Shepard Albertson (an alias used by Blueprint when he sings).

From the opening chords of “Never’s Enough,” with its funk-fueled retro feel, to the outrageously smooth vibes of “Underwater,” Ant effortlessly blends the voices of Slug and Murs as they reflect on everything from personal growth to cultural change. With a series of ideas and insights delivered with the intention of furthering discussion, Felt 4 U rises to meet the current moment and signals that the Felt saga is far from over.

Felt – “Felt 4 U” (Album Review)

Felt is a duo consisting of underground veterans MURS & Slug. The pair made their debut in late 2002 with a self-titled full-length produced by The Grouch, but would step their game up a lot much more on their 2005 sophomore effort that featured front to back production from Ant. Last we heard from them was in ‘09 with a 3rd album that was entirely produced by Aesop Rock but after a dropping a loosie earlier this week, MURS & Slug are hooking back up with Ant to drop Felt 4 U out of nowhere.

The album kicks off with “Never Enough”, where the duo talk about leveling up over a funky beat. The next song “Find My Way” talks about forever paying the price over an instrumental to cruise down the street to while the track “Don’t Do Me Like That” talks about getting into arguments with their wives over a mellow beat. The song “Trees” sees the 2 trading bars back & forth over a boom bap beat with an organ loop while the track “Through the Night” gets romantic over a sensual instrumental.

The song “Freeze Tag” is a crowd mover with a somewhat disco inspired beat while the track “Sticks & Stones” looks back on their childhoods over a heavenly instrumental. The song “Underwater” gets back on the love side of things over a fittingly aquatic instrumental while the track “Alexander F’real” continues to show their chemistry over a slick beat. The song “Hologram” with The Grouch & Aesop Rock sees the 4 talking about how they don’t give a fuck what people be hollering over what could possibly be the darkest instrumental on the whole album while the penultimate track “Crimson Skies” talk about being at the crossroads over a cinematic boom bap beat. The album finishes with “Borboleta”, where Felt talks about how far they’ve come & how far they have left down the road over an summery instrumental.

These guys have never disappointed me personally & this is a pretty damn good comeback for them. Ant absolutely kills it on the boards whereas both MURS & Slug both sound like they never left because the way they compliment each other is still as fantastic as ever.

Score: 8/10
