Today In Hip Hop History: Rawkus Records Released The ‘Lyricist Lounge Volume One’ Album 26 Years Ago

lyricist lounge

On May 5th, 1998 Rawkus Records released the first installment of the Lyricist Lounge albums titled Lyricist Lounge, Volume One, which showcased New York. It was a double-disc compilation that featured De La Soul, Mos Def, Q-Tip, Tash of Tha Alkaholiks, Punch & Words, O.C, Ras Kass, Black Thought, Common, Pharoahe Monch, Saul Williams, Kool Keith, Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek, Bahamadia, Rah Digga, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Jurassic 5, KRS-One, Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine, Last Emperor, and Company Flow.

This CD is one of those that you don’t get often. It had incredible and intensely clever wordplay, and was great for the culture because of the positive support it showed for hip hop. Back then everyone thought hip-hop was rap music and rap music was gangsta. It made people think twice before making an assumption like that. Any hip-hop purist who enjoys freestyles and great rhymes that make you think then this is the album for you.

Yasiin Bey Speaks on ‘Very Talented MC’ Drake: ‘I Have Reached Out to Him’

yasiin bey talks style music projects and his new home in cape town

Yasiin Bey, the rapper formerly known as Mos Def, hit Instagram on Monday to talk about Drake once again. This time, Bey stated he was not attempting to slander or clown The Boy.

After saying he doesn’t hate anyone, Bey revealed, “I have reached out to him, I have no responses yet. I’m not keen to talk about people or to them through a screen, I prefer to talk to people directly.

“The young man is very talented, he’s been able to be very successful with that talent, and I have no issue with his success or anything that he’s been able to achieve as a result of his talent.”

Later in the video, Bey referred to Drake as a “very talented MC” and added that he reached out Dave Chappelle to attempt to get in contact.

You can hear it all from Yasiin Bey below.

Drake took an online shot at Yasiin Bey following the “Ms. Fat Booty” rapper claiming the Certified Lover Boy makes Pop Music.

In case you missed it, Bey was on The Cutting Room Floor podcast and compared Drizzy’s music to strolling through Target.

Drake is pop to me,” Bey said. “In the sense, like, if I was in Target in Houston and I heard a Drake song… It feels like a lot of his music is compatible with shopping.

“Or, you know, shopping with an edge in certain instances.”

Drake showed his “edge” comment on an Instagram post breaking down the situation from a Canadian point of view: “Bohemian Bucket.”

The Boy also showed a microphone around a beautiful landscape, writing: “They’re always eager to go there and quick to forget how we got here.”

Do you think bars are on the way?

Mos Def & Talib Kweli Give Insight On Forthcoming Black Star Album [Video]

Mos Def and Talib Kweli

Source: photo: WENN

A reunion that has been years in the making looks like it is finally going to happen. Mos Def and Talib Kweli have confirmed a joint project is definitely on the way.

As spotted on Okay Player the Brooklyn duo made a recent appearance at the Sole DXB festival in Dubai. While the two discussed several topics the elephant in the room host Bobbito Garcia got the pair to discuss their sophomore effort as Black Star. Even though each MC would face constant questions regarding the LP Talib made sure that he didn’t base their friendship on the music.

They detailed how they would travel together to different cities and record when it felt right. “We would record, go out, see the city, eat good food, come back and listen to the recordings and we would think ‘yeah, I like that,’” Bey said.  “I knew we were in good stead when we were in Copenhagen. We would record one song there and by the time we got to Amsterdam we had three songs. When I heard those three songs I was like ‘we are golden,’” he continued. “That is my template for an album. The first three songs that you record will be the vibe of the whole record. Whatever follows after this will follow the tone of those three.”

Pretty Flaco made it clear he feels confident in the work they put in thus far. “This new album is ridiculous. And I don’t really care if you all don’t like it. This just means we like different things and that’s fine” he admitted. Talib also offered further insight into the direction of the music saying “there is no [song] for the ladies or one for the clubs”. “We played the album for Marlon Wayans and he was like ‘yo, this is dope. But you all need one where they can feel you in the clubs. And I was like ‘Marlon, you still go to clubs?” he explained.

You can see video of their discussion below.

Yasiin Bey & Talib Kweli Detail How Black Star’s Upcoming Album Came To Be

For nearly two years, Hip-Hop fans have heard bits and pieces surrounding a second album by Black Star. In February of 2018, Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) told concert-goers in Colorado that he and Talib Kweli were recording. “New Black Star with Madlib, Talib Kweli, Yasiin, coming soon!,” said the MC/singer. He added, “All Madlib, all day. 2018, Madlib, Black Star.” Kweli since corroborated those reports, recently proclaiming that he now listens to the yet-unreleased album regularly. 2018 came and went without new Black Star music. However, the Brooklyn, New York duo celebrated the 20th-anniversary of Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star with a series of reunion concerts. Since then, Yasiin has released a new album, Negus, as a museum art installation. Additionally, he worked with Kanye West, Kid Cudi, and Robert Glasper as well as an early taste of recent Madlib work thanks to Freddie Gibbs and Otis’ “Education,” also featuring Black Thought. Meanwhile, Talib Kweli has moved into media with his People’s Party show, along with features for Gang Starr, Diamond D, and Brother Ali, to name a few. Talib Kweli Is Recording An Album Produced By Diamond D. Take A Look. (Video) In a Sole DXB panel discussion moderated by Bobbito Garcia and reported on by The National, the two MCs updated fans on the album, while speaking together, side-by-side.

“This new album is ridiculous,” Bey told applauding fans in Dubai. “And I don’t really care if you all don’t like it. This just means we like different things, and that’s fine.” Black Thought, Yasiin Bey, Pharoahe Monch & Tobe Nwigwe Make A New “Live At The BBQ” (Video) Kweli, who has been much more prolific with releasing music over the last decade, says that he felt pressure from fans. “People kept saying, ‘When is the next album coming up,’ so much that it got to a point that for me, personally, I caught myself also [asking] ‘When is the next album out?’ in all my conversations with Yasiin [Bey].” He says of a period around the mid-2010s, “I had to check myself because that can’t just be what our relationship is all about.” Upon a visit to South Africa to his friend, band-mate, and onetime business partner, Kweli approached the time together purely on humanity. “When I went there, I made it a point to not talk about music or Black Star. We have been friends for so long, and I couldn’t remember just breaking bread with Yasiin.” This friendship-focused energy reportedly persisted in hangs throughout Europe in the weeks and months that followed. Kweli says that his rhyme partner’s changes since the late ’90s have an impact on his songwriting. “Because Yasiin is so focused on making sure that what we say with the music is deeper than just patting ourselves on the back and connected to a real compassion, there will be rhymes that I will kick, and he will say ‘ehh…’ because the rhymes are too braggy, and they are too much about me.” After making some revisions, Talib reflects, “Now I feel the new album is good and I really stepped my game up. It’s not that I am always rapping about those things, but he made me realize that I just don’t have to at all.” Talib Kweli Rocks A Rawkus Records In-Store At Fat Beats (AFH TV Video) Not unlike JAY-Z and Kanye West’s 2011 Watch The Throne album, Black Star’s sophomore LP was recorded in hotel rooms using mobile studio technology. Barcelona, Copenhagen, Paris, and Amsterdam reportedly played host to some of the sessions. Yasiin notes that after three songs were made during the Denmark sessions, he felt confident in the momentum of the recording. “That is my template for an album. The first three songs that you record will be the vibe of the whole record. Whatever follows after this will follow the tone of those three.” The pair reveal that comedian Marlon Wayans is among those who have heard the recordings. Madlib & Freddie Gibbs’ Tiny Desk Concert Is An Education On 1 Of 2019’s Best Albums Madlib is replacing a cast of producers including Hi-Tek, Da Beatminerz, J. Rawls, Shawn J. Period, 88-Keys, and others for the 1998 Rawkus Records LP. Videos of Talib Kweli, including freestyles and interviews, are available at AFH TV. We are currently offering free 7-day trial subscriptions. Music from Yasiin Bey and Madlib is presently on the official Ambrosia For Heads Playlist.
