Statik Selektah Reconnects with Kota the Friend on “Once in a Blue Moon” (Album Review)

Brooklyn, New York emcee/producer Kota the Friend back for his 12th studio LP. Breaking out in 2016 off his debut EP Palm Tree Liquor, he would go on to follow it up with 2 more EPs before dropping his debut album FOTO in 2019. Kota has since dropped 10 more under his belt, with my personal favorites being To Kill a Sunrise & To See a Sunset both fully produced by Statik Selektah. 2 & a half years later, they’re linking back up on Once in a Blue Moon.

“Bacon Egg & Cheese” is this soulful boom bap intro advising not to fix what isn’t broke whereas “Blah” featuring Logic goes full-blown jazz rap talking about their shooters having the greens comin’ at your head if you be spewin’ bullshit out your mouth. “How It Is” maintains the jazzy boom bap vibes pullin’ up on their opps’ new crib like “fuck yo couch” as if he’s the late Rick James, but then the tranquil “Let It Go” talks about a place where you’re free head to toe.

Meanwhile on “Free My Dogs”, we have Kota over a mellow boom bap instrumental calling for all his homies to be let out from the pen just before “Northside” joyously talks about buying land up north. “What You Need” featuring PhearNone goes lo-fi asking their romantic interests that very question prior to the jazzy “Mr. Mellow” talking about having it cold. “Get It Done” soulfully wears his heart on his sleeve like it’s jewelry & “Count Your Days” ends by showing his fearlessness.

If you’re like me & you consider both albums that Kota the Friend has previously done with Statik Selektah to be the finest material of his entire career, Once in a Blue Moon drops outta nowhere recapturing the magic of it’s predecessors for an individual both of work satisfactory to fan of both. Statik’s production is jazzy yet lo-fi throughout a good bulk of it & the performances from Kota himself are the most focused he’s sounded in a while.

Score: 9/10

Kota the Friend Shares New Video “Alabama Hills”

Kota the Friend continues his red-hot momentum with a surprise music video release for “Alabama Hills,” a highlight track from his new project entitled Lyrics to GO, Vol. 5. Listen HERE via FLTBYS Music and Entertainment LLC & Venice Music.

In the video, Kota’s razor-sharp lyrics jump out of the screen while he unpacks how his success affects the people around him. “Alabama Hills” is the third single from LTGV5 that has an accompanying visual aid, arriving on the heels of “YUMA” and “OREGON.”

Kota shares, “‘Alabama Hills’ is about maneuvering through newfound success and coming face to face with the entitlement of loved ones. Alabama Hills is a remote but beautiful mountainous location in California. I took a solo road trip to the Alabama Hills just to reset and get away from all the noise back home. This song is about what it sounds like when the people closest to you are beating you down.”

Kota The Friend Is Living In The Moment And Celebrating Life In Latest Album “PROTEA”

Kota the Friend sees the bigger picture in all things. Traversing previous lanes with a project that’s symbolic of his constant evolution as an artist, the Brooklyn-bred multihyphenate drops off his fifth studio album, “PROTEA“. Ever since dropping last week, the project has been continuous on our personal playlists.

PROTEA is a head-nodding ode to living in the moment and celebrating life. As Kota maps his journey to inner peace, he’s reminded of the things that bring him fulfillment. For starters, the love he has for family, most notably his wife (titling the album after her favorite flower), is what centers it all. Unlike anything he’s released previously, Kota harnesses his musical prowess for a project that sets the tone for a summery vibe. With clever storytelling and an effortless cool that he’s retained as part of his identity, he balances a pristine yet experimental new sound while finding joy in everyday life.

On the inspiration behind PROTEAKota the Friend shares: “‘PROTEA’ is like a love letter expressing appreciation and admiration for the person that stood by me in my darkest hour. The protea is my wife’s favorite flower and I wanted to create a piece of art specifically for her that stands the test of time. The artists that are featured on the album are people we listened to a lot when I was driving her to and from work. In that way she helped me curate the album. I want this album to serve as a reminder to give people that stand by you their flowers. We have to show appreciation for the people that love us and uplift us at our most vulnerable.

“Barcelona” and the previously released “Hope You Heal” are natural products of the affirming elevation that Kota weaves into his messaging and music, serving as catalysts for PROTEA. The new album cements him as a stalwart rapper, producer, and songwriter in the industry whose sound has evolved over the years. To make this release even more special, all features on PROTEA are artists that Kota and his wife listened to when he used to drive her to work. And every collaboration on the album is an artist that was featured on their wedding playlist. The expansive body of work includes features from WolftylaAllen StoneHello O’ShaySamm HenshawZak AbelAloe Blacc, and Branxton Cook.

The sonic identity of PROTEA is inextricably linked to the human experience. “Nola II” will light up the dance floor, while “Red Lights” is a thumping celebration of the euphoric excitement that comes with pursuing romance. “Forget About It” grapples with sunny optimism, whereas “Super Rare” praises an attraction that is beyond reason, and the album track “Protea” tells the story of a forever love over dreamy synths.

Kota the Friend has rejuvenated the demand for meaningful music through his pioneering DIY approach. In other words, he’s paving the way for a breakthrough 2023 on his own terms, and doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
