Screen Shot 2022 12 23 at 8.45.50 AM

On this date two years ago, John “Ecstasy” Fletcher of the legendary rap duo Whodinia passed away suddenly in the presence of his family. Ecstasy was only 56 years old. As a member of Whodini alongside his partners Jalil and Grandmaster D, Ecstasy stood out as one half of Whodini’s smooth, mature lyricism coupled with their unique fashion style.

“The African and Native American ancestors have gathered around and chosen this day, during the Winter Solstice, Dec 23rd, 2020 to call upon a most endeared, generous, and sincere soul who graced The World’s heart through performance, hip-hop, family, children and grandchildren,” his family said in a statement on the date of his passing. “John ‘Ecstasy’ Fletcher was a beloved man, the life partner to Deltonia and ex-husband to Carla, twin brother to Joseph, artist, friend, and lifetime performing partner to Jalil.

“Please send love and prayers to our family, and with open hearts we ask the ancestors to cover his soul in peace and tranquility. Play his music if it moves you, and know he’ll be hearing you on his way home this day, Dec 23rd.”

Today in Hip-Hop History: Whodini Dropped Their Self Titled Debut Album 39 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2022 07 08 at 9.04.01 AM

On this date in 1983, pioneering rap trio Whodini, who then was sans DJ Grandmaster D, released their self-titled debut album Whodini on the Jive Records imprint.

Produced primarily by Grammy-nominated British producer and composer Thomas Dolby, Whodini’s first album never really saw any commercial success, however, the album’s “Magic Wand” track did climb to #11 on the Dance Club Songs and number 45 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs while the Willesden Dodges-produced track “The Haunted House of Rock” peaked at number 27 on the Dance Club Songs and number 55 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs.

The eight-track album’s duration is less than 45 minutes, something that was virtually a no-no in all genres of music during the early 80s, however, as one of Hip Hop’s first-ever full-length albums, the duration for each song is extensively longer than the average Hip Hop song today.

Salute to Jalil, Ecstacy(RIP) and Grandmaster D for their timeless contribution to Hip Hop history!

Gucci Mane Salutes Hip Hop Royalty Whodini With “Fake Friends” Track

Gucci Mane is Name in Wrongful Death Lawsuit for South Carolina Club Shooting

ATL trap legend Gucci Mane has dug in the crates and come up with his own rendition of the classic Whodini track “Friends” called “Fake Friends”, in which he tells his own stories of disloyalty from “friends in greed.”

Yesterday, Gucci shared a clip of the video, which features his one-year-old son Ice Davis. He began the video speaking to his son, saying, “Blood is thicker than water. There is no friend indeed like a friend in me. But there’s one thing you gotta watch and that’s a friend in greed. Ice you’re one years old now, it’s time you learn more about your pops. I know you was born rich and are the baby CEO, but it’s a cruel world out there. And everybody’s not your friend, but your daddy always got your back.”

Just last month, LaFlare paid homage to his friend Young Dolph, who was shot and killed in his hometown of Memphis, with the track “Long Live Dolph” off the So Icy 1017 compilation project.

Legendary Hip-Hop Trio Whodini Honored with ‘Hip Hop Icon Award’ at Black Music Honors

Whodini has finally gotten the chance to smell their flowers. The legendary Hip-Hop trio was honored with the Hip Hop Icon Award at the 3rd Annual Black Music Honors which aired this past weekend on national broadcast syndication.

The tribute was sanctioned in pure nostalgia as fellow icons in rhyme Doug E. Fresh, Yo-Yo, and Monie Love joined to perform Whodini’s classic hits. While the “Friends” collective is known to be a trio, only two members were present Jalil Hutchins and John Fletcher best known as Ecstasy.

Hosted by Rickey Smiley and a very bumpy Letoya Luckett, the 3rd Annual Black Music Honors commemorates the unrivaled careers of esteemed music professionals who own a marked impact on Black Music Culture.
“The Black Music Honors gives us an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the trailblazers of African-American music,” said Don Jackson, the profound show’s executive producer in a statement.
Additionally honorees include R&B icon Stephanie Mills (Legends Award), famed gospel artists BeBe and CeCe Winans (Gospel Music Icon Award), the esteemed songstress Faith Evans (Urban Music Icon Award) and celebrated singer/actor Bobby Brown (R&B Soul Music Icon Award).
Bell Biv DeVoe paid homage to their New Edition brother with a “showstopping” medley of all of his celebrated hits which lead Brown into respectfully happy tears.
The award show was originally taped on the night of August 16, just hours after the passing of the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, to whom they paid respects to in a heartfelt memorial performance.
