Vince Carter Launches Scholarship For Youth in Toronto

vince carter

Vince Carter has always preached the importance of having an education. Now he is raising the stakes for the youths of Toronto.

Carter has announced the official launch of the Vince Carter Scholarship and Mentorship Program in the Toronto area of Canada. The scholarship, which amounts to $25,000 per student, will be primarily targeting high school students who have taken up a passion for sports, music, film, fashion, broadcasting, media, or science, technology, engineering, and math.

Statistics from the Toronto District School Board revealed the graduation rate for Black high school students is 69 percent and the dropout rate sits at 20 percent. The resources and support that will be provided through Carter’s program will be instrumental in changing the narrative.

“I am doing my part, now it’s time for you to do yours by reaching out to kids, extended family, friends, educators and share this opportunity,” Carter says in a statement.

The scholarship criteria require applicants to possess a passion in any of the mentioned academic pathways; reviews of academic scores, personal character, community service; a 500-word essay.

Applicants are directed to the exclusive application portal  www.parismedia.org/community/ or email [email protected].

Hoop Heads Celebrate 20th Anniversary Of Vince Carter’s Epic Slam Dunk Contest Showing

Vince Carter has decided to call it a career at the end of the current season and his aerial expertise helped redefine the dunk contest in the 21st Century. Hoop heads on Twitter are joined in celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 2000 NBA Slam Dunk Contest where Vinsanity melted everyone’s face off with his gravity-defying dunks.

Carter, then a member of the Toronto Raptors, arrived at the 2000 NBA All-Star Weekend contest and dazzled his basketball peers and fans with a dizzying array of dunks, including a 360 windmill, a between the legs bounce dunk and an “elbow in the rim” dunk that has been often imitated.

Currently a member of the Atlanta Hawks, Carter doesn’t fly high as he used but don’t get it twisted, he can still get up there when needed. These days, the former Air Canada employs a more cerebral approach to the game and still gets buckets when it counts. An eight-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA team member, Carter definitely deserves all the praise he’s getting today.

Check out reactions from Twitter fans celebrating the 20th anniversary of Vince Carter destroying the 2000 NBA Slam Dunk Contest below.

Vince Carter To Rock The OG Nike Shox BB4 For The Rest of The NBA Season [Photos]

At the height of his career Vince Carter was often referred to as “Half Man, Half Amazing” due to his ability to defy gravity and make posters on a nightly basis. Though he signed with Nike in 2000 his Shox BB4 sneakers never really enjoyed the commercial success or cult following like those of Michael Jordan, Penny Hardaway or Charles Barkley.

Still many fans of “Air Canada” (he was the franchise player of the Toronto Raptors at the time) loved the Nike Shox and in an interview with Nike, Carter himself fondly reminisces about the sneakers he wore when he took flight in Sydney and put Frederic Weis on a poster he didn’t want any parts of.

“The success of the dunk started the legend of the shoes. But I myself went to another level with them, too. I became a star player in the BB4.”

If that wasn’t the nastiest in-game slam dunk of all-time it’s at least top 3. Just sayin.’

Either way almost two decades after the release of the sneaker, Vince is paying homage to the OG kicks by wearing the classic silhouette for the remainder of the 2018-19 NBA season. Whether or not he’ll make some new posters in them at the tender age of 41 is anyone’s guess but sneaker heads closely watching the game will surely enjoy the memories they’ll be conjuring up.

Check out pics of the kicks and “the dunk” below and let us know if you’d be interested in copping a pair should they get retro’d.
