ViacomCBS is ‘Hopeful’ to Rebuild Business Relationship With Nick Cannon

ViacomCBS is 'Hopeful' to Rebuild Business Relationship With Nick Cannon

ViacomCBS severed ties with Nick Cannon over a month ago after he made some anti-semitic remarks on his podcast. But it looks like things are taking a turn for the better after Cannon’s apology tour.

The multi-hyphenate has been using his Cannon Class platform to educate himself and really understand why his comments were wrong. President of entertainment and youth brands at ViacomCBS, Chris McCarthy, recognized these efforts and praised him during a town hall meeting with employees.

“I don’t know if anyone has been following Nick’s journey since the incident – I have, and the thing that’s unique about Nick – different from many others, is that Nick owned it. He apologized, he said it was wrong. He has since been on a journey of learning and understanding, and more importantly, he is using his voice to help educate other people and is becoming an advocate on this issue. This is consistent with the Nick I’ve known for ten years,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy didn’t detail any specific plans for Cannon to work with the company again, but he said he’s “hopeful” that they can reconnect with Nick Cannon to tell stories about important social issues.

Check out McCarthy’s full statement below:

Let me start with stating the important and hopefully obvious fact – what Nick said was wrong, hurtful, and it was offensive. We have to stand up for our values – clear and simple. Hate against one of us is hate against any of us and Nick’s comments were anti-Semitic. So, we needed to stand up to that and we did that which was the right thing to do.

I don’t know if anyone has been following Nick’s journey since the incident – I have, and the thing that’s unique about Nick – different from many others, is that Nick owned it. He apologized, he said it was wrong. He has since been on a journey of learning and understanding, and more importantly, he is using his voice to help educate other people and is becoming an advocate on this issue. This is consistent with the Nick I’ve known for ten years.

As I look back on all of this, I regret that we didn’t have our new ‘Cultural Code’ built sooner. It’s a shame that it took an incident like this for us to take a step back and have a clear process in place to address issues like this. Part of that came from when I asked myself – ‘what could we have done that would have made it better or what can we do to prevent this from happening in the future?

I struggle with the fact that Nick, a longtime partner and friend of ours, is on this journey and we’re not part of that journey. And that’s honestly where the our new ‘Cultural Code’ came from and bringing in social justice partners so we all have the base-level education. And, if I could change anything, I would have asked us to build that two years ago.

We’re in the content business and we all understand the power of telling stories. The gift that we have as storytellers is to transport audiences into new worlds and experiences – enabling them to walk in someone else’s shoes. And when we do this well, we can give the gift empathy and understanding. And we do this all the time, as we will see from the upcoming video. And we have been doing it for years, from the early days of ‘Real World,’ to ’16 and Pregnant,’ to what Trevor (Noah) does every day. We help other people understand the world we live in. And we need to step up even more.

So, when I take a step back, I am hopeful. I am hopeful we find a way to bring these two things together and hopefully we will have the opportunity to do that with Nick again.

Nick Cannon Suing Viacom, Seeking $1.5B For the Value of ‘Wild N’ Out’

ViacomCBS Severs Ties With Nick Cannon Following Alleged Hate Speech

According to a recent report from TheShadeRoom, actor/entertainer Nick Cannon has filed a $1.5 billion lawsuit against ViacomCBS, which is the estimated value of the famed Wild N’ Out program.

Viacom announced that they would be taking ownership of the show after Cannon was fired after controversial comments were made in an interview with former Public Enemy member Professor Griff.

Cannon’s team put out a statement, saying, “It is just that simple, Wild’N Out belongs to Nick! The show was created by Nick Cannon with his idea and original thought. Wild’N Out has brought billions of dollars in revenue to Viacom since 2015. And Nick deserves and has earned everything it is worth.”

The statement continues, “From the platforms he provides for other entertainers, the jobs he creates for black youth, the time he gives to mentoring incarcerated men and women, to the money he gives back and puts into communities, homelessness, and people less fortunate. He is constantly evolving both spiritually and mentally, as well as, taking action in learning, education and bridging the gap within the Jewish and African American communities, so that it will allow us to build relationships, work together and learn from each other in order to move forward in equality.”

Cannon plans to reinvest the money from the lawsuit in inner city programs, youth organizations and underserved communities to receive better educational programs.

Nick Cannon Demands Complete Ownership and Apology from ViacomCBS

bo

Nick Cannon has been dropped by ViacomCBS for comments on his Cannon’s Class podcast that was classified by the media giant as anti-Semitic.

After the decision to remove Cannon, the Wild ’N Out host has written a lengthy open letter that asks for complete ownership of his MTV and VH1 series Wild ’N Out and an apology for their actions.

“If I have furthered the hate speech, I wholeheartedly apologize. But now I am the one making demands,” Cannon wrote. “I demand full ownership of my billion dollar ‘Wild ‘N Out’ brand that I created, and they will continue to misuse and destroy without my leadership! I demand that the hate and back door bullying cease and while we are at it, now that the truth is out, I demand the Apology!”

Throughout his “Truth and Reconciliation” Facebook post, Cannon also detailed the reactions he has received overnight, stated Viacom is on the wrong side of history and more.

You can read it in full below.

ViacomCBS Severs Ties With Nick Cannon Following Alleged Hate Speech

ViacomCBS Severs Ties With Nick Cannon Following Alleged Hate Speech

ViacomCBS gave Nick Cannon the boot in an attempt to cover up the truth and avoid uncomfortable, but necessary conversations.

A month old episode of his podcast/YouTube series, Cannon’s Class, began gaining traction after a Jewish journalist flagged the segment for anti-semitic remarks. “You can’t be anti-Semitic when we are the Semitic people… That’s our birthright. We are the true Hebrews,” the Wild ‘n Out host said in the episode featuring former Public Enemy member Richard Griffin, best known by his stage name Professor Griff.

Nick doubled down on his comments in a Facebook post once the episode went viral. “I am an advocate for people’s voices to be heard openly, fairly and candidly,” he wrote. “In today’s conversation about anti-racism and social justice, I think we all — including myself — must continue educating one another and embrace uncomfortable conversations; it’s the only way we all get better. I encourage more healthy dialogue and welcome any experts, clergy, or spokespersons to any of my platforms to hold me accountable and correct me in any statement that I’ve made that has been projected as negative. Until then, I hold myself accountable for this moment and take full responsibility because My intentions are only to show that as a beautiful human species we have way more commonalities than differences.”

Because Nick Cannon failed to bow down, ViacomCBS fired him, even though his hit improv show was renewed for three more seasons in 2019, and brings the network’s best ratings.

ViacomCBS reportedly released the following statement:

ViacomCBS condemns bigotry of any kind and we categorically denounce all forms of anti-Semitism. We have spoken with Nick Cannon about an episode of his podcast “Cannon’s Class” on YouTube, which promoted hateful speech and spread anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

While we support ongoing education and dialogue in the fight against bigotry, we are deeply troubled that Nick has failed to acknowledge or apologize for perpetuating anti-Semitism, and we are terminating our relationship with him.

We are committed to doing better in our response to incidents of anti-Semitism, racism, and bigotry. ViacomCBS will have further announcements on our efforts to combat hate of all kinds.
