Van Jones Honored with Jeff Bezos’ Courage and Civility Award, Receives $100M for Non-Profit Organizations

CNN's Van Jones Reportedly Felt Ambushed After 'The View' Host Said 'The Black Community Don’t Trust You Anymore'

CNN personality and Dream Corps founder Van Jones was awarded the courage and Civility Award by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. As a part of the honor, Bezos presented Jones with $100 million to gift to the non-profit organizations of his choice.

The Courage & Civility Award recognizes leaders who aim high, pursue solutions with courage, and always do so with civility. The recognition comes on the 25-year anniversary of the first organization Jones co-founded, The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights (1996). In the years following Jones has co-founded Color Of Change (2005), Green for All (2007), Dream Corps (2011) and REFORM Alliance (2019).

After receiving the award, Jones released the following statement:

I am beyond honored to accept Jeff Bezos’ inaugural Courage & Civility Award. I do so with a sense of gratitude, awe and wonder. In my 30 years as an activist and social entrepreneur, I have neither heard nor dreamed of a charitable prize of this magnitude.

Even the award’s title both inspires and intimidates. After all, nobody is courageous and kind, 100 percent of the time. I get scared and irritable, just like everyone else. But the truth is: the work I do has taught me what courage & civility LOOK like and what grace FEELS like.

That’s because I labor so closely with people whose grit and grace are almost otherworldly.

Leaders like Alice Marie Johnson, Michael “Harry O” Harris, David Safavian, Topeka Sam, Shaka Senghor, Louis L. Reed, and LaTonya Myers — among many others — blow me away on a daily basis. Out of the nightmare of America’s prisons, they emerged with their dreams and dignity intact. Their efforts today are moving us all toward a more just, humane and merciful society. As the founder of the Dream Corps, I am proud to be their ally in the work of transforming the criminal legal system – and many other dysfunctional systems.

From prisons, jails and detention centers … to tough urban neighborhoods … to Appalachian coal country … to Native American reservations … to the U.S./Mexico border — I see too much genius wasted. I have seen too many promising changemakers fail because they could not simultaneously be expert fundraisers.

And yet today’s escalating social and ecological crises require us to directly empower more visionaries and solutionaries from struggling communities – and connect them to the resources and networks they need to thrive. Formerly incarcerated leaders often tell me: “Those closest to the problems are closest to the solutions, but farthest from resources and power.”

I will use this prize to help reverse that sad irony, as best I can. Breakthroughs of all kinds are just waiting to be discovered — especially at the intersection of advanced technology and community wisdom. When leaders are willing to work together across lines of race and party, they can discover workable solutions to seemingly intractable problems. And when we help grassroots changemakers access (and unleash) the power of technology, finance and media – we can take those innovations powerfully to scale. I have seen that process work, using only modest resources. With major resources, the sky is the limit.

Speaking of that: in this time of challenge and peril, I am glad that new astronauts are lifting the ceiling off humanity’s dreams, again. I am inspired whenever someone reaches for the heavens. There is always more heaven up there that the rest of us can reach for – each in our own way.

If a small number of humans can make miracles happen in space, then a large number of humans can make bigger miracles happen here on Earth. I thank God for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help leaders across the country do just that.

Meek Mill and Michael Rubin’s REFORM Alliance Name Robert Rooks CEO, Elevates Van Jones to Exec Board

Meek Mill and Michael Rubin’s REFORM Alliance has named renowned criminal justice advocate Robert Rooks as the new Chief Executive officer and elevated founding CEO Van Jones to the Executive Board. The changes will take place on March 1, 2021.

“Robert is a game-changing hire for our organization,” REFORM co-chairs Meek Mill and Michael Rubin said. “He has a proven track record of changing laws and is universally-respected by leaders on both sides of the political spectrum. We’re incredibly grateful for Van’s leadership in laying the groundwork for REFORM and spearheading our first round of legislative victories. We’re thrilled for Van to join the Executive Board where he will continue to help build the organization.”

Most recently, Rooks was the co-founder and CEO of Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ), which saw him partner with governors, legislators, and community leaders to advance reforms that reduced over-incarceration and prioritized smarter safety investments for communities. He also served on the Executive Committee of Florida’s Amendment 4 campaign that restored voting rights for more than 1.4 million Floridians with past convictions and was the Organizing Director for California’s Prop 47 campaign in 2014.

“I’m honored to lead REFORM into the next phase of growth,” Rooks said. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for the organization’s founding partners and know their commitment to criminal justice reform is truly unparalleled. I look forward to building on the foundation that Van established and helping drive meaningful legislative change that will positively impact the millions who are unjustly trapped in our country’s broken probation and parole system.”

“With Robert Rooks as our CEO, the sky’s the limit for us at REFORM,” Jones said. “When we first launched two years ago, I set out to build a robust team, elevate REFORM from a start-up to a high-performance organization and generate major legislative wins. We’ve made incredible strides on all three fronts. But Rooks is going to put a rocket booster under everything we have done so far. He knows how to build, he knows how to lead and he knows how to win. I am very proud to join the REFORM board, where I will be supporting him and the whole REFORM team to take everything to the next level.”

While Jones was CEO, REFORM passed a series of bipartisan legislative wins in several states across the country, including AB 1950 in California, which is widely considered to be the most transformative probation reform bill in the United States and will decrease the state’s probation population by 33 percent, give 24,000+ life years back, and prevent 48,000+ prison admissions due to technical probation violations over the next five years.

CNN’s Van Jones Reportedly Felt Ambushed After ‘The View’ Host Said ‘The Black Community Don’t Trust You Anymore’

CNN's Van Jones Reportedly Felt Ambushed After 'The View' Host Said 'The Black Community Don’t Trust You Anymore'

Van Jones appeared on The View last week to promote his documentary, The Reunited States and didn’t get the warm welcome that he was expecting.

“He felt like they were rude, and he was completely blindsided by how they questioned him. He was not happy about how the interview went. It was unprofessional,” a TV source told Page Six.

The show’s Sunny Hostin, and part-time co-host Ana Navarra, asked Van Jones about his previous association with the Trump administration.

“There are those who really accuse you of being an opportunist, a chameleon so to speak, who provided a racial cover for former disgraced, twice impeached, President Trump… People in the black community don’t trust you anymore. What is your response?” Hostin asked him.

Navarro followed up by saying: “You’ve lost a lot of people who trusted you, and who saw you as a voice, because of the positions you took during Trump.”

Meghan McCain, who co-hosts The View and produced The Reunited States, was also reportedly blindsided by her co-hosts’ confrontational approach.

“[Van] expected a friendly environment, and I don’t think Meghan even knew there was anything controversial about him. It was how they asked the questions that was off-putting. It was shocking how intolerant they were,” the source explained.

Jones expressed his disapproval for the conversation on Twitter following the incident. “I was there to promote a film… about people listening across the lines of difference,” he wrote. “Ironically, the need for the film was made more apparent by some of the co-hosts.”

Van Jones Reportedly Secretly Helped Create Trump’s Police Reform Order

Van Jones Reportedly Secretly Helped Create Trump's Police Reform Order

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on June 16th for police reform in front of the public while surrounded by uniformed police officers and military officials. But it might come to a surprise to many that Van Jones had a hand in it.

Jones, the chief executive of JAY-Z and Meek Mill’s REFORM alliance which is supported by a healthy list of celebrities and billionaires, and California attorney Jessica Jackson met with Jared Kushner to help write the order, according to The Daily Beast.

The CNN analyst praised the order and called it a “good thing” but left out that he worked on it. “The executive order is a good thing,” Jones said, “mainly because you saw the support of law enforcement there … There is movement in the direction of a database for bad cops. We have never had a federal database for bad cops, that’s why all these cops go all over the place doing bad stuff… The chokeholds, that’s common ground now between Nancy Pelosi and Trump. Good stuff there.”

Rev. Al Sharpton spoke to The Daily Beast and warned about trying to form an alliance with Trump. “Van’s experiment with Trump is a case of him having more faith than I have, but I’m not going to attack him for doing it,” he said.

“I think he’s well-intentioned, but I think he totally underestimates the kind of guy he’s dealing with. I just disagree that the people he’s dealing with have a sincere bone in their body. But I can’t fault him for trying,” Sharpton continued.

Jack Dorsey Makes $10 Million Donation to REFORM Alliance to Deliver Masks to Every Prison in America

Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey’s #smartsmall initiative will assist the REFORM Alliance with a $10 million donation for COVID-19 Relief efforts.

With the donation, REFORM will purchase and deliver 10 million masks and additional PPE to prisons across all 50 states. The aim is to ensure the incarcerated population, correctional officers, healthcare workers, and personnel working in state, federal and private facilities are protected from COVID-19 exposure.

In the top-10 COVID-19 hotspots in the United States, eight are linked to prisons and jails. The largest COVID-19 cluster in the country is at Marion Correctional Institution in Marion, Ohio, where there are 2,197 infected inmates—more than 80 percent of the prison population. To date, over 5,000 correctional officers nationwide have tested positive for the virus.

“I’m grateful REFORM exists,” Dorsey said. “The criminal justice system needs to change. COVID-19 adds to the injustices, and REFORM is best suited to help.”

“This generous donation from Jack and #startsmall is an absolute game-changer,” REFORM Alliance CEO Van Jones said. “Not only will this gift help us protect millions from the threat of COVID-19, but this level of support from a tech titan marks a turning point for the criminal justice reform movement. It’s truly an honor to call Jack an ally in this fight, be able to provide masks to every prison in America and potentially save tens of thousands of lives.”

The donation coincides with the #AnswerTheirCall film, a PSA that highlights how COVID-19 is devastating behind prison walls and turning prison sentences into death sentences for 2.3 million people.

startsmall’s donation will be included in its opensource document, which publicly highlights the financial grants that the organization has provided to groups combatting the COVID-19 crisis.

Van Jones Says Meek Mill is ‘One Step Closer to Justice’ After Hearing for New Trial

On Tuesday (July 16) afternoon, Meek Mill returned to court in efforts of having a decade-old conviction removed from his record.

The Championships rapper, his lawyers and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office presented in front of the Superior Court judges in a Philly courtroom, stating he should receive a new trial for his 2008 drug-and-gun conviction. The new trial is being seeded due to credibility issues of the officer who made the arrest. In addition, further proceedings are being requested to be transferred to a new judge in Common Pleas Court.

If the petition is successful, the new trial could bring an end to Mill’s legal issues as the case may not be tried again due to questionable evidence.

The Philadelphia Inquirer detailed the decision may not return for weeks or months and there was no indication on how the ruling would return. The promising detail from the court came from Judge Jack A. Panella who detailed a new trial would almost certainly not be presided over by Judge Genece E. Brinkley. Brinkley has presided over Mill’s case for the last decade and is accused of questionable practices, creating additional hurdles for the rapper and unjustly jailing the rapper for probation violations. Brinkley sent the “Dreams & Nightmares” rapper to prison in 2017.

A previous effort to receive a new trial was denied by Brinkley who stated the evidence provided was not sufficient.

After court on Tuesday, CNN commentator and leader of the REFORM Alliance spoke outside to reporters.

“We are one step closer to justice. This hearing was an extraordinary moment where you have attorneys on both sides saying that a new trial should go forward,” Jones said. “I have been in criminal justice for 25 years, I’ve never seen a district attorney’s office calling for a new trial at the same time the defendant is calling for a new trial.

Meek Mill should have never been convicted in the first place. He was convicted on the testimony on a completely disgraced and discredited police officer.”

You can hear Jones’ full statement below.

In his latest move toward reforming the criminal justice system, Meek Mill has proposed a new bill, House Bill 1925, which could radically change probation and parole laws in the state of Pennsylvania if passed. The Championships rapper was joined by Van Jones on behalf of REFORM Alliance.

According to HighSnobiety, the new bill aims to “prevent courts from sentencing an individual to consecutive probation sentences, prevent courts from extending someone’s probation or parole due to nonpayment of fines and fees, and establish an incentives program to reward good behavior.”

Additionally, the bill aims “to prevent re-incarceration for drug tests testing positive for marijuana, associating with someone with a criminal background, or traveling beyond the jurisdiction of the court,” HighSnobiety reports.

“I speak for the people who don’t have a voice,” Meek reportedly said to the crowd outside of Philly’s Municipal Services Building on Tuesday, April 2. “This proposed bill is the first step in changing the criminal justice system and it’s only right that we start in my home state,” Meek said. “I’ve lost too much time away from my son, my family, my friends and fans in Philly because of outdated probation laws, so I want to make sure people don’t have go through what I did.”

Meek Mill, REFORM Alliance Proposes Probation Reform Bill

Meek Mill and the entire Reform Alliance partnered with Pennsylvania lawmakers to introduce a new bill that’s aimed to fix the probation and parole system.

The Philly rapper alongside REFORM Alliance co-chairs Van Jones and Michael Rubin, as well as state representatives Jordan Harris and Sheryl Delozier, held a press conference on Tuesday afternoon to reveal the good news.

“This proposed bill is the first step in changing the criminal justice system and it’s only right that we start in my home state,” Meek said. “I’ve lost too much time away from my son, my family, my friends and fans in Philly because of outdated probation laws, so I want to make sure people don’t have go through what I did.”

The proposed bill intends to help people on probation or parole get out of a vicious cycle by reducing probationary periods, establishing incentives for good behavior, and minimizing restrictions for technical probation violations, which is basically what landed Meek behind bars in 2017 and served as a catalyst for his activism.

In other words, people on probation will not get sent back to jail for smoking weed, associating with convicted criminals, or traveling outside of their jurisdiction unless proven they were trying to escape supervision.

“With this proposed legislation, we want to put people on probation and parole in positions to succeed—not to wind up back in prison and perpetuate an ongoing cycle,” Jones, the CEO of REFORM Alliance, said. “I appreciate the work and time that Representatives Harris and Delozier have devoted to collaborating with the REFORM Alliance to address this bipartisan issue. This is just beginning, and there’s more work to be done.”

Oh Word?: Van Jones Says It Was Kim Kardashian Who Got The ‘First Step Act’ Prison Reform Bill Passed

Van Jones is a really big fan of Kim Kardashian and her sudden obsession with prison reform. In fact, he credits the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star for getting the First Step Act passed this week.

When approached by TMZ, the CNN commentator told paparazzi “If Kim Kardashian had not gone to the White House and talked to Donald Trump, we would not have passed this bill.” See the rest of his message up top.

The Act, passed by the United States Senate with a vote of 87-12, is the start of fairer sentencing for drug offenses and more. The Washington Post gives a quick synopsis for those who aren’t up to speed:

“The bill would help prisoners earn good-time credits so they could reduce their sentences for good behavior. It would offer them more training and work opportunities, as well as the chance to earn money that would go into escrow accounts to pay for post-release expenses. It would bolster programs to help prisoners reintegrate into society after release. It would ban shackling of pregnant women. The legislation would relax some mandatory-minimum sentences, mainly on drug charges, and give judges more discretion to sentence people to less than the mandatory amount of time if they are convicted of nonviolent drug crimes. It would also address the ongoing outrage that more than 2,000 people have languished behind bars because of an unjust disparity in sentencing rules between charges for crack and powder cocaine offenses, a distinction that disproportionately hit African Americans.”

Who would have ever guessed Kim K. would one day put her selfie stick down long enough to attempt to influence our nation politically? Do you agree she’s the reason this bill passed, or is Jones tripping?
