Chris Rock to Team with Steven Spielberg to Create Biopic on Dr. King

Chris Rock to Deliver Netflix's First Live Stand-Up Performance

Chris Rock and Steven Spielberg are teaming up for a biopic on the life of American icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

According to Variety, Chris Rock will direct and produce the film, Steven Spielberg will fill the role of executive producer. Universal Pictures supports the film and will pull from the King: A Life biography created by Jonathan Eig. The book is considered to be the “definitive biography” of the civil rights icon, bringing FBI information and interviews to create a “courageous but emotionally troubled individual who demanded peaceful protest while grappling with his own frailties and a government that hunted him.”

There isn’t currently a date set for the film.

Kevin Hart to Star and Produce in ‘Action Scene’ On Quibi

Love him or hate him, Kevin Hart is one of the hardest working comics in the game. He’s always cooking up something. Deadline reports that Kevin Hart will star in the Quibi original series Action Scene, a comedic action-thriller based on the frenetic opening scene of his 2016 concert film Kevin Hart: What Now? His company Laugh Out Loud is producing.

According to the description, “Action Scene will feature Hart playing a fictionalized version of himself on a quest to land the action-movie role of a lifetime. After being rejected for the role, Kevin randomly encounters a leading A-List action movie star. Their meeting inadvertently sets off a chain of events that force Hart to fight his way through a series of over-the-top action sequences with the help of some of Hollywood’s biggest action movie heroes.”

Hart will executive produce in addition to starring. Jeff Clanagan, Laugh Out Loud’s president and Hart’s long-time business partner, will serve as a producer on the project. Dave Becky will also executive produce.

“I couldn’t be more excited to bring big action and even bigger laughs to a new audience through this partnership between Quibi and Laugh Out Loud,” said Hart. “Our teams are working together to create something truly unique and I can’t wait for viewers to see it all unfold.”

Hart joins Thomas Lennon, Steven Spielberg, Darren Criss, Peter Farrelly, Liam Hemsworth, and Tyra Banks who all have projects on Quibi.

Hater: Steven Spielberg Wants To Keep Netflix Films From Qualifying for Oscar Awards

Looks like Netflix’s critically acclaimed film Roma almost winning an Academy Award rubbed a Hollywood legend the wrong way and now he’s looking to stop films that don’t debut in movie theaters from ever walking away with the gold.

IndieWire is reporting that film icon Steven Spielberg is planning on pushing some new Oscar award rules which keeps films that debut on streaming platforms like Netflix out of Academy Award consideration. He can hate all he wants but Netflix did change the game in many ways from letting people rent movies by mail to streaming content to backing original series and films that we know and love today.

But regardless of how successful Netflix has been over the years, Spielberg doesn’t feel anything they produce should be recognized by the Academy being that they do it for TV, and not theaters.

“Steven feels strongly about the difference between the streaming and theatrical situation,” said an Amblin spokesperson. “He’ll be happy if the others will join [his campaign] when that comes up [at the Academy Board of Governors meeting]. He will see what happens.”

Spielberg currently serves as the Academy Governor for the directors branch so there’s a chance that this could actually happen. But the idea is being met with resistance from some of his peers including Ava DuVernay who took to Twitter and called on the Academy to listen to directors who don’t agree with Spielberg’s sentiment.

Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell also chimed in on the subject throwing his support behind Netflix produced films staying in Oscar contention.

We don’t know if these kind of reactions will sway Steven Spielberg to let Netflix films live at the Academy Awards but don’t be surprised if films that debut on streaming platforms quietly stop being nominated at the Oscars.
