Nickelodeon Celebrates Pride Month by Unveiling Spongebob Squarepants is a Member of the LGBTQ+ Community

Do you remember that episode when Spongebob and Patrick had a baby? The beloved sponge was fed up with the starfish not holding his weight around the house. But it looks like there was a hidden message within this episode.

Nickelodeon is celebrating Pride Month with some of its LBGTQ+ characters and actors, which included our favorite sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea.

The network tweeted a photo of Spongebob on June 13th with pride colors. The revelation immediately erupted into a full-blown discourse on Twitter and some folks declared him a “gay icon.”

“Celebrating #Pride with the LBGTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month,” the official Nickelodeon account wrote. The tweet was assisted by graphics from artists Ramzy Masri.

In an interview with People in 2005, Spongebob Creator Stephen Hillenburg once described the main character as asexual – which is still a part of the LGBTQ+ community. “We never intended them to be gay,” Hillenburg said of Spongebob and Patrick. “I consider them to be asexual.” Backing up Stephen’s comments fans are emphasizing that the asexual representation on TV needs to be more inclusive and needed in pop culture.

‘SpongeBob Squarepants’ Creator Stephen Hillenburg Dead at 57

SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg passed away following a fight with ALS, Variety reports. He was 57 years old. “Steve imbued ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ with a unique sense of humor and innocence that has brought joy to generations of kids and families everywhere,” Nickelodeon said in a statement, according to Variety. “His utterly original characters and the world of Bikini Bottom will long stand as a reminder of the value of optimism, friendship and the limitless power of imagination.”

Before SpongeBob, Stephen Hillenburg filled in as an executive for Rocko’s Modern Life from 1993 to 1996. SpongeBob SquarePants later debuted on Nickelodeon in 1999. The show spawned two films, 2004’s The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, 2015’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, and the Tony-winning SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical.

The SpongeBob show and motion pictures highlighted notable artists, including Wilco, the Flaming Lips, Ween, and the Shins, among others. Broadly, David Bowie voiced Lord Royal Highness in the scene “Atlantis SquarePantis.” SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical, which debuted in 2016, also included Bowie and Brian Eno’s tune “No Control,” alongside tracks composed by T.I., Panic! At the Disco, John Legend, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
