DJ Spinderella Sounds Off About Being ‘Wrongfully Excluded’ From Lifetime’s Salt-n-Pepa Biopic

DJ Spinderella Sounds Off About Being 'Wrongfully Excluded' From Lifetime's Salt-n-Pepa Biopic

DJ Spinderella released a statement ahead of the release of Lifetime’s Salt-n-Pepa biopic last week.

She expressed her disappointment about being excluded from the flick. “Too often, Black women who have made meaningful contributions in their industry are left out of historical narratives. Back when Salt n’ Pepa was building our legacy, which is rooted in empowering women, I could not have dreamed that this same group would one day disempower me,” her message started.

Spinderella continued, “Words cannot fully express my disappointment when I learned a decision was made to move forward with a Lifetime biopic that wrongfully excluded me from every aspect of development and production – all the while using my image throughout, given that I played an integral role in the group’s story and success.”

The Brooklyn native announced that she will not be supporting the film. “There’s nothing more unacceptable than a woman being silenced by another woman. It is for this reason, I will not be supporting the biopic.”

On the other hand, Spinderella praised the actress who portrayed her, Monique Paul, and said she’s working on telling her own story.

What are your thoughts?

Salt-N-Pepa Respond To Spinderella’s Lawsuit, Claim It’s A “Smear” Campaign

First the Fat Boys breakup, then The Fugees breakup, and now DJ Spinderella got drama with Salt-N-Pepa?!

It’s been a few weeks since DJ Spinderella sued her old rap group for unpaid royalties for spinning at some of their tour dates and appearing on their reality show. After responding to the lawsuit by stating they never stiffed their former DJ, Salt and Pepa went on to claim they did nothing but try to help a struggling Spinderella at her request.

In documents obtained by The Blast, Cheryl James (Salt) and Sandra Denton (Pepa) stated that Deidra Roper (Spinderella) reached out to them for work only to turn around and accuse them of being shady.

“After decades of friendship, Spinderella has embarked on a smear campaign, and sued her friends, based on blatantly erroneous assertions. The truth, however, is that Salt and Pepa have always tried to do right by Spinderella.”

According to the rap duo after years of going their separate ways, Spinderella asked to once again ride with the “Push It” rappers and they obliged.

“Spinderella decided to quit performing with Salt and Pepa years ago and asked to rejoin the group “Salt N Pepa” in December, 2013. Nostalgia and the desire to help a friend motivated Salt and Pepa to agree. They offered to pay Spinderella on a per show basis to perform with the group. Spinderella, grateful for the opportunity, agreed, and they performed together again.”

But things didn’t go as planned and they once again parted ways and ended up in court.

“Things unfortunately did not work out and Salt-N-Pepa spent months trying to close open issues—like how they would each refer to their shared history going forward as they each pursued respective careers—in the hope they could part as friends.”

This is just a sad situation all around. How things will end is anyone’s guess but we’re pretty sure that after a lawsuit like this chances of a reunion tour are slim to none.

Salt-N-Pepa Says They Didn’t Fleece Spinderella

2019 A+E Networks Upfront

Yesterday (July 12), word got out that Spinderella was suing Salt-N-Pepa over royalties the DJ claims she was cheated out of. However, her longtime groupmates are saying no such thing occurred.

Well actually, sources say Spin is just bitter because she feels like the third wheel. Ouch.

Reports TMZ:

Sources connected with group tell TMZ … the ladies think Spinderella’s suit is really about her own insecurities — that she feels like a third wheel, and has ever since 2007’s ‘Salt-N-Pepa Show’ on VH1. Spin was only a featured guest.

We broke the story … Spinderella sued, claiming she got cheated out of royalties and says Salt-N-Pepa excluded her from a bunch of gigs and appearances before getting unceremoniously axed from the group.

However, our sources say Spin’s not entitled to any royalties in her contract — including the $125k she says she’s owed from the 1999 ‘Best of’ album. We’re told she was always paid as an independent contractor, but S and the P still made sure Spin always got the finest accommodations to go with her paycheck.

Did they really just saying, “We gave her nice hotel rooms, so those are the breaks”? Bruh…

If you check the Salt-N-Pepa credits, while the names of Salt (Cheryl James) and Pepa (Sandra Denton) are prominent, you’d be hard pressed to find Spin’s (Diedra Roper).

Unfortunately, the days of the DJ being the feature and the MC’s being the guest stars are long. Reportedly, James and Denton also own the Salt-N-Pepa name, making Spin’s claims of copyright infringement mute.

Cold game. But hopefully, for the sake of the culture, one day the ladies will work out their differences.

Spinderella Sues Salt-n-Pepa for Unpaid Royalties and More

There is money beef brewing between Spinderella and Salt-N-Pepa as the historic Hip-Hop DJ is suing for numerous unpaid royalties, appearances and more.

Spin has filed a suit against her two groupmates stating she was swindled out of dollars dating back to 1999. According to TMZ, the lawsuit reads Spidnerella was promised to receive a third of the royalties for their Best Of album but did not. The amount she was set to receive from the release was $125,000.

The issues do not stop there, Spinderella also states she was excluded from the VH1 that chronicled the group’s rise. Another third of funds were to be given to her, however, she was limited to just guest spots and paid less than the agreed upon amount.

Back in 2018 Spinderella appeared at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards but was not paid.

Adding insult to the pocket injury, Spinderella was stiffed on additional royalties. The report states SoundExchange, the company responsible for the distribution of royalties to artists revealed her groupmates received over $600,000 in the past decade. Spinderella did not receive a dollar.

In the lawsuit, Spin is stating trademark infringement as she is still being promoted in appearances, fraud, and breach of contract.

You absolutely hate to see it. Spinderella is suing Salt-N-Pepa for unpaid royalties. Recently, the group’s longtime DJ left the group (or was fired, depending on who you ask), but now she wants the coins she believes she is owed.

According to TMZ, Spin believes she been getting hit with the jig since at least 1999. That’s when a ‘Best of’ album dropped that she claims she was told she would be getting one third of the royalties and a $125K payment. But she did not.
