Netflix CEO Pledges $120 Million to HBCUs and United Negro College Fund

Netflix CEO Pledges $120 Million to HBCUs and United Negro College Fund

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and his wife Patty Quillin pledged to donate $120 million to Spelman and Morehouse College, and the United Negro College Fund.

“There are many good places to donate, but the [historically Black colleges and universities] are 150 years old, incredibly resilient, producing an amazing number of Black graduates,” Hastings said during an interview with CNBC on Monday. “We want to help draw attention to the HBCUs, to them being part of the solution for America, and for black children to aspire to.”

The donation comes after the growing outrage for racial equality since the death of George Floyd. On top of that, Black communities have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. “The amount of tragedy really did get us to focus and say, ‘let’s do something now that will be supportive of these great institutions and give people some sense of hope,’” Hastings continued. “This moment is not the first time that racism has reared its, you know, terribly ugly head.”

Spelman’s Deltas Make History… AGAIN! Donates 160K to School for Tech

Word on the street is that you cannot stop a Spelman woman…

However, if you attended the prestigious historically Black institution, and happen to have been initiated into the illustrious sisterhood of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., they not only can’t stop you, but they want to be like you… Oh to be a Delta girl.

Sure these women stroll, they step, they look cute in their crimson and cream, and have all the frats falling all over them… but there are things about these ladies that is just far more dynamic that the surface shellings of sorority girl life. These women are serious about sisterhood, scholarship and service.

Evidence of this was made plain by one of the most powerful lines “made” on the campus.

As these dynamic women returned to “The Yard” for HomeKoming, they did more than stunt at the tailgate (or the party at Republic that also celebrated the 25th anniversary with their sandz from the Sweet Mu Pi 1994 line of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Bloody Psi 1994 line of Omega Psi Phi). In celebration of their line’s 25th anniversary, The Ladies Of I.A.D. 60 (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.-Eta Kappa Chapter, Sp. 1994) gave a whopping $160,000 donation to Spelman. The six figure donation will go towards Spelman’s “Technology Innovation Fund” which is dedicated to increasing student, faculty and staff access to emerging technology and infrastructure.

Matriculating during the presidential tenure of their soror, Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, giving back and an intentional focus on sisterhood has been instilled in them from their undergraduate days in Sisters’ Chapel. It is their hope that they are able to pass on this legacy to those young ladies currently in the chapter eager to change the world.

Seems like it is working.

Last year, current members of the chapter received a high honor at the sorority’s 46th Southern Regional Conference. They were not only named the Collegiate Chapter of the year, but were honored for having the Highest Grade Point Average of any undergraduate chapter in the Souther Region. The students also received the Arts and Letters Program of the Year Award from the larger body.

Spelman College is a historically black college located in Atlanta, GA dedicated to educating women of African descent. The Eta Kappa Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on Spelman College’s campus in 1970. This line is particularly blessed to have two angels, their line sisters, Tiffany Lipscomb (c/o 1994) and Michelle Slater (c/o 1995), that assisted them from above in their fundraising goal.

Tragic Shooting of Four Black College Students During Back To School Party in The Atlanta University Center

The Atlanta University Center (AUC) is a collective of some of the top historically Black colleges and universities in the world. It is actually the largest and the oldest academic consortium of HBCUs. Prestigious schools such as Spelman and Morehouse, who boast as alum Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Stacey Abrams and Black venture capitalist, Verdun Perry, are but two of the schools counted in this grouping of higher learning. And each year, to celebrate the new freshman students and to promote AUC unity, the schools host a “Back-To-School” block party. All of the schools’ new freshman are encouraged to attend.

This year was no exception. On Tuesday night, according to ABC News, at least four people were wounded after a shooting by an unidentified gunman broke out. He shot into the crowd outside of Robert W. Woodruff Library- across from the old Stegals- where about 200 party revelers responded in horror.

Little is known about the shooting, but reports from the Atlanta police say that the gunshots started around 10:30 p.m. Why? Two groups got into an argument.

Four young women were hit. Sources say that two of the women were from Clark Atlanta University (ages 18 and 19) and two were from Spelman College (ages 17 and 18). It is believed that none of the young ladies were a part of the argument, nor were they intended to be shot. While the young ladies have filed reports and have received medical attention, no arrest have been made.

Atlanta police did release a video on Wednesday released of the suspected gunman. In the video you see him wearing a white T-shirt, gray sweat pants, a tan Gucci hat and gray New Balance sneakers.
