Sony Music Entertainment and Pharrell William’s production company OTHERTone have announced the launch of a groundbreaking podcast series, Drapetomaniax: Unshackled History.

Hosted by renowned journalist and cultural critic Michael Harriot, the podcast aims to reveal the untold stories of Black Americans from a distinctly Black perspective. Each week, Drapetomaniax will delve into key figures and moments in Black American history that have been marginalized or omitted from mainstream narratives.

Harriot’s research, combined with humor and special guest appearances, will provide a compelling and accurate portrayal of Black history. Notable guests featured on the show include MSNBC’s Joy Reid, actor Yvette Nicole Brown, journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, and many more.

“Drapetomaniax is a simple recipe,” said Harriot. “We picked the most fascinating figures and important-but-largely-unknown events from Black history and seasoned it with the biggest stars, the best storytellers and the most respected scholars.”

Drapetomaniax: Unshackled History is a collaboration between Sony Music and OTHERTone, with Pharrell Williams serving as executive producer and Moses Ajibade Soyoola as the producer.

BREAKING: Sony Music Drops R. Kelly After Heated Protests & Lifetime Docuseries Airs

R. Kelly

R&B singer R. Kelly is officially a free agent in the music biz. New reports claim Sony Music has decided to drop the controversial musician following backlash from Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly docuseries and heated protests.

According to reports, Sony Music has quietly cut its business ties with the award-winning performer.

Sony Music has decided to dissolve its working relationship with R. Kelly, Variety has learned. No external announcement of the move is planned in the immediate future, says a source, who added that Kelly’s presence on the RCA website (where he remains) will not indicate his departure from the company, as his back catalog will remain with RCA/Sony. Kelly’s last release with the label was a Christmas-themed album in 2016, although he has released several songs independently since that time, presumably with Sony’s consent, and Tweeted earlier this year that he has a new album on the way. Contacted by Variety, reps for both RCA Records and its parent company, Sony Music, declined comment. (Variety)

This week, protestors gathered outside of Sony Music headquarters in New York City to urge the label to drop Kells.

Sony Music, through its label RCA Records, has Kelly among its artists. So organizers behind #MuteRKelly, Black Women’s Blueprint, Care2, Color of Change, Credo Action, Girls for Gender Equity, NOW-NYC and UltraViolet went to the company’s New York City offices to present it with a Record Label of Shame award and ask it to drop Kelly. (Huffington Post)

Last week, pop superstar Lady Gaga promised to pull a past Kelly collabo from streaming sites.

Recently, Atlanta rapper Future said people should stop putting ample focus on Kelly.

“Man, who is that? I thought we had forgot about that? We giving it too much attention. When you give things too much attention, they blow up. That’s why he gonna blow up. That’s why his music gonna do what it do. If you stop talking about it, it’ll go away.” (Power 106 FM)

Plane Flies Banner Over Sony Music Demanding To Drop R. Kelly From Label

People are not only asking radio stations to #MuteRKelly, but even demanding that his label, RCA/ Sony drops the troubled R&B sensation from their roster of artists. Friday afternoon, a plane (commissioned by a national women’s organization UltraViolet) flew over the Sony Music office in Culver City, California with a message for the execs in the building. The message was loud and clear:

“RCA/Sony: Drop Sexual Predator R. Kelly

Recently R. Kelly has been under fire ,as multiple women have come forth to talk about their alleged abuse at his hands in a Lifetime documentary series Surviving R. Kelly. Many of these women were minors, and believed that Kelly not only raped them but brainwashed them against their families. Rape is a harsh word, but because they were minor if he had sexual relations with them, that constitutes statutory rape in America.

UltraViolet’s chief campaign officer said:

“It is long past time for RCA to dump R Kelly and take a stand against abuse. Their inaction is beyond shameful. RCA can no longer pretend that R. Kelly’s music can be separated from his violent actions. Kelly uses his fame, musical talent, fortune, and standing in the music industry to lure in and abuse young Black girls. Even some of his songs are literally inspired by the abuses he has perpetrated. Kelly has been able to get away with his years of abuse precisely because his victims are young Black girls who face even more barriers to justice than their white peers. Sixty percent of Black women are sexually abused by age 18, but their abuse is written off because of harmful racial stereotypes that paint Black women and girls as more sexually promiscuous and aggressive than young white girls. We must believe and support Black survivors of sexual violence. It is time all of us work alongside the amazing Black women organizers calling out R. Kelly and his enablers to ensure justice.”
