Skechers Trolls Nike After Infringement Lawsuit Filing

The two most unlikely footwear companies to be beefing are now in a heated legal war. Nike is alleging Skechers is copying their popular releases.

As spotted on High Snobiety the California based brand is being accused of lifting Nike’s designs from the Nike Air VaporMax and the Nike Air Max 270. So much so that the sportswear giant filed an infringement lawsuit earlier this month alleging “Skechers’ business strategy includes copying its competitors’ designs to gain market share.”

Last week Skechers took out an advertisement in the Los Angeles Times addressing the claims stating the claims are baseless. “As you may have heard, Nike filed a lawsuit against Skechers in Los Angeles alleging that those shoes infringe certain Nike patents. Please note that the lawsuit has been filed just recently and merely contains Nike’s unproven allegations. Skechers plans on defending the lawsuit vigorously and in response will deny that any of the listed styles infringe any of Nike’ patent.

This is not the first time Nike accused Skechers of style thievery. In 2016 they asked a judge to remove several Skechers releases from retail stores that they felt copied their patents. In what has to be considered elite corporate trolling, Skechers dropped on an advertising poking fun at Zion Williamson’s sneakers falling apart while on the court back in February.

Nike has not formally responded to the advertisement.

Nike Files Lawsuit Against Skechers For Biting Their Designs

Nike Vapormax

Source: Nike / NIke

While Nike and adidas continue to rule the sneaker culture with the kind of dominance you’d see in the NBA when super-teams form. Other brands have been forced to do everything they can to keep up such as signing celebrity endorsers to…stealing designs and silhouettes?

According to Hypebeast, Nike is accusing Skechers of all companies of stealing their Air Max 270 and VaporMax designs, and truth be told it kinda looks like they might be on to something.

In the lawsuit Nike claims that Skechers created “Skecherized versions” of its Air Max 270 and VaporMax’s specifically pointing to Skechers’ Skech-Air Atlas, Skech-Air 92, Skech-Air Stratus and Skech-Air Blast models as “infringers” of its popular silhouettes which features patented Air bag soles that helped take Nike to the next level since the 80’s.

As reported by Footwear News, “Nike filed this lawsuit to continue to defend its design innovation and stop Skechers from free-riding on Nike’s significant investment of talent and resources that are deployed to innovate,” per Nike’s lawsuit. This isn’t the first time Nike has sued Skechers after claiming the brand also bit their Free and Flyknit designs. Those lawsuits are still pending in court.
Just by the eye test it looks like an open and shut case but who knows what evidence or opinions will be introduced into the case that can help or hurt Skechers’ latest designs.

Shaquille O’Neal is for the children!

Footwear News is reporting that Shaq Diesel is teaming up with Skechers in an effort to release affordable basketball sneakers for kids who just don’t have the funds to cop footwear bearing the name of current NBA superstars. The collaboration will lead to the first time Skechers has ever designed athletic footwear specifically made for basketball courts (word?).

Skechers President Michael Greenberg knows that there’s not better time than now to get into the kids sportswear game especially since Shaquille O’Neal is willing to partner with them on the new venture.

“This all-new children’s basketball collection is an important addition to our offering, so it’s only fitting that we’re launching with the help of one of the biggest and best players in NBA history. Fans everywhere continue to enjoy Shaq’s enthusiasm for the sport, so we know kids will be excited to wear his shoes while on the court or at play. We couldn’t ask for a better brand ambassador to help bring athletic footwear to elementary and middle schoolers in a new and exciting way.”

Shaquille for his part is excited to see little kids running around in Shaq branded Skechers even if they won’t be playing above the rim in them.

“I think kids are going to love the way the new styles look and they’ll love playing in them even more,” said O’Neal. “These boys and girls might not be dunking yet, but I can’t wait to see them posting up in their new Shaq by Skechers footwear.”

The kids collection will be available in three colorways and is currently available at select retailers and of course Skechers stores and Skechers.com

Skechers Trolls Nike In Bold “Just Blew It” Ad

North Carolina v Duke

While Nike and adidas duke it out for sneaker supremacy out in these streets, Skechers cleverly roasted the Swoosh with an ad that highlighted an incident that not only injured the top prospect in this years NBA Draft, but also (allegedly) caused the former’s shares to drop 2 percent.

In an ad that read “Just Blew It” followed by “We won’t split on you,” Skechers posted a picture of the Nike PG 2.5 sneakers that man-child Zion Williamson busted through in the first few minutes of Duke’s highly anticipated game against rival North Carolina.

Coooold blooooded!

We’re not sure why Skechers, who doesn’t even manufacture basketball sneakers, decided to troll Nike like this but it’s definitely got their brand buzzing across social media. Are they planning on throwing their hat in the NCAA or NBA ring for sportswear? It’s possible. We mean who would’ve ever thought Kawhi Leonard would’ve bolted Jordan Brand for New Balance?

Either way whoever thought of this should get a raise and adidas should be looking to poach them from Skechers because this alone has put Skechers in the mouth of sneakerheads all across the globe. Doesn’t mean it’ll lead to sales but still, all publicity is good publicity, right?
