The Netflix cancelation curse strikes again!

Deadline is reporting that this time around the streaming service has decided to pull the plug on Spike Lee’s fan-favorite series She’s Gotta Have It after just two seasons. Based on Spike Lee’s 1986 film, She’s Gotta Have It was centered around a rising star of an artist, Nola Darling (DeWanda Wise) and the choices she’s faced within both her personal and professional life.

Referred to as “a seriously sexy comedy and rousing celebration of female empowerment,” the series found an audience that appreciated what it brought to the table, but it seems like it wasn’t a big enough following for Netflix’s taste. Still Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Ted Serandos had kind words for Lee and his relationship with the company.

“Spike Lee is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and we’re thrilled he brought the series She’s Gotta Have It (1986, based on his first feature film) to Netflix,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, Netflix. “While this is our last season, we’re very proud that it will be on our service for years to come, and excited to be working with Spike on his upcoming Netflix film Da 5 Bloods.”

At least Spike will continue to work with the streaming service but what does the future hold for She’s Gotta Have It? Apparently it’s being shopped around but no word on if anyone has any real interest in taking on the canceled series.

Hulu maybe?

Well, at least Netflix still has Friends in their library, right? We hope y’all detected the obvious sarcasm.

On a journey to becoming a multifaceted artist, Nola takes up photography just as the city starts to heat up. “My vision for the summer is to create like I’ve never created, to be the best partner to my partner that I can be… to get that shmoney!” she declares in all her box braid glory.

Also growing closer to her girlfriend Opal, Nola learns not to overstep with Opal’s daughter.

Watch above as Nola starts to discover her true potential as an artist and tune in to Netflix for the full season on May 24.

Netflix Announces Season Two of ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ to Be Released on May 24

Spike Lee has been having a great couple of weeks since claiming his first Oscar win. Adding to his successful streak, Netflix has announced the premiere of the second season of She’s Gotta Have It, the series based on his film debut.

Created by the Academy Award winner who also happens to executive produces the series alongside Tonya Lewis Lee, all nine episodes of Season 2 will be released on May 24, 2019.

The series is described as a “seriously sexy comedy and rousing celebration of female empowerment, She’s Gotta Have It Season 2 offers a timely and topical portrait of rising talents, with free-spirited artist Nola Darling (DeWanda Wise) at the center. Struggling with newfound success this season, against a backdrop of black art and culture, Nola must decide if she will remain true to her creative ideals or give in to the corporate world.  Her journey of self-discovery helps transform the lives of those around her, including friend and sometimes lover Mars Blackmon (Anthony Ramos), who sets out to pursue his true passion of music as well as her inner circle of Opal (Ilfenesh Hadera), Greer Childs (Cleo Anthony), Jamie Overstreet (Lyriq Bent), Clorinda Bradford (Margot Bingham), Shemekka Epps (Chyna Layne) and Winnie Win (Fat Joe). Their journey expands to new destinations this season beyond their home base of Fort Greene, the vibrant Brooklyn enclave that continues to evolve and change as gentrification remakes the neighborhood.”

When Spike Lee first dropped the film in 1986, to say it was a game changer would be an understatement. Highlighting sexual liberation and sex-positive identity through the of Black woman was iconoclastic.  Now as season two is to be released, Lee will continue to explore the themes of love, sex, and relationships, from the perspective of Nola Darling.

The Spike Lee-directed series (he and his wife Tonya Lee Lewis are both executive producers) based on his classic film will return on May 24, to be exact.

DeWanda Wise reprised her role as Nola Darling, and this season will be “struggling with newfound success” while “against a backdrop of black art and culture.” So is Nola going to secure the bag and go corporate? We shall see.

The cast of usual suspects also return, including Mars Blackmon (Anthony Ramos), Greer Childs (Cleo Anthony), Jamie Overstreet (Lyriq Bent)  and Winnie Win (Fat Joe). While Ft. Greene, Brooklyn is still home base, this season Nola and company will also be expanding outside the borough.
