‘Sesame Street’ Delivers Transparent Message About Racism Against Black People in CNN Town Hall

Sesame Street Delivers Transparent Message About Racism Against Black People in CNN Town Hall

Sesame Street is a staple in a lot of our childhoods. The kid-friendly series has been providing educational content since the Civil Rights era.

CNN aired a town hall Saturday morning to help explain the cause of the nationwide protests in a simple way that a child can understand.

The special was hosted by CNN’s Van Jones and Erica Hill, Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism alongside the show’s beloved characters, Elmo, Big Bird and other Sesame Street favorites to talk and explain what racism is in the United States, and answer any important questions from children watching across the country.

At the start of the clip, you hear the crowd chants “Black Lives Matter” while Elmo looks out the window and tells his dad that he doesn’t understand what’s happening. Elmo then asks his father “Why are these people together?”

Elmo’s dad Louie explains to Elmo, “Not all streets are like Sesame Street.” He continued, “On Sesame Street, we all love and respect one another. But across the country, people of color, especially in the Black Community, are being treated unfairly because of how they look, their culture, race and who they are. What we are seeing is people saying ‘Enough is Enough.’ They want to end racism.”

Louie also explains to Elmo that sometimes protestors make signs, sharing an example of one that says “Love Justice Peace” that he shows he will be bringing to a protest at the community center later in the day.

When Elmo asks his dad for the definition of racism, Louie replies, “Racism is when you treat other people unfairly because of the way they look or the color of their skin.”

The video ends with the furry red muppet telling Louie that he wants everyone to be treated fairly and wants to end racism. Elmo asked his father, “What can I do daddy? How can Elmo support his friends?”

This touching special was a reminder that everyone, regardless of age, has a voice that deserves to be heard. Just check out this little girl passionately chanting, “no justice, no peace!” during a protest in the viral video below:

Remember The Morning Rhymes Of Hip-Hop Harry? Black Twitter Does

This morning, Hip Hop Harry was the trending on Twitter because he’s awesome.

Take a step back in time before responsibilities and MSG began to slow us all down. When Cream of Wheat, Farina, and oatmeal were Nana’s specialty and you had to have it piping hot in the morning.

Then like DM’s, slide Hip Hop Harry right in.

Hip Hop Harry was a children’s television show that aired on Discovery Kids and TLC. It was part of the ‘Ready Set Learn’ segment in 2006 to 2008.

For many of us, it was similar to Barney & Friends, Sesame Street, etc. as a live-action program. Using age-appropriate hip hop music and dance to teach social, educational, physical and creative skills, Hip Hop Harry raised the babies.

Consider him the lower cusp millennials’ first hip hop experience. Hip Hop Harry was one of the first edutainment platforms for the culture. He created a positive tone for learning and memorization.

With the proliferation of hip hop throughout the global culture, it was a breath of fresh air to see it starts even at early learning. Hip Hop is the preferred conduit of creative communication for the world.

Hip Hop Harry was the ambassador of that movement for the world’s youth.

You better recognize.

Black Thought & Jimmy Fallon Link Up With Big Bird & The Gang for A Sesame Street Rap

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon - Season 7

Last week fans of the classic PBS show Sesame Street were heartbroken to learn that Sesame Street puppeteer Caroll Spinney had passed away at the age of 85, and though he may not be with us people like Jimmy Fallon and Black Thought will make sure his legacy lives on.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the longest running children’s show in television history, the Tonight Show host and Illadelphia MC got on a school bus with Big Bird, the Count, Bert and Ernie, and others to bust out a Sesame Street rap over the classic theme song.

Naturally Black Thought didn’t go into “beast mode” as children aren’t mentally prepared for the gems and jewels he’s used to dropping in his raps but he did have fun on the bus with his verse.

“To get to Sesame Street you don’t need a GPS/ You can watch on HBO or check it out on PBS/ I can tell you how to get there with some help from my friends/ Then you’ll never have to ask yourself that question again.”

With Jimmy Fallon and the Sesame Street characters interjecting their own bars into Thought’s raps, it was a pretty fun clip to watch if you’re a fan of Hip-Hop and puppets.

Check out the Sesame Street Rap segment below and let us know if you or your kids will be following Sesame Street when they relocate to HBO Max next year.

Bert and Ernie Are a Gay Couple, Per ‘Sesame Street’ Writer

40th anniversary of Sesame Street in Germany

Turns out one of that old conspiracy theory was true. Bert and Ernie, the homies from Sesame Street, are a gay couple.

Per TMZ, and via Queerty, a Sesame Street writer confirmed the roommates are actually partners.

Bert and Ernie have been on the show since it started in 1969, and there’s always been speculation about the true nature of their relationship. Mark Saltzman, who joined the “Sesame Street” crew in 1984, cleared it all up by telling Queerty he wrote Bert and Ernie as a gay couple.

He says the ‘Sesame’ duo is a reflection of his own same-sex relationship and not about pushing an agenda.

Mark says he based Bert and Ernie on his relationship with film editor Arnold Glassman — Mark was Ernie and Arnold was Bert.

Of course, Bert and Ernie have shared a basement apartment at 123 Sesame Street for the last 49 years … although they’ve always slept in separate beds. Still, their chemistry — while playfully arguing and bickering — was always palpable.

It’s 2018, no silly gay jokes and worries about kids being brainwashed are necessary. If you are worrying about what Bert and Ernie do in their bedrooms, YOU are the one with an issue. Just saying.

And now, Bert & Ernie’s Fresh Prince of Bel Air parody just because.
