Today in Hip-Hop History: The Game Dropped His Debut LP ‘The Documentary’ 17 Years Ago

On this date in 2005, Compton emcee The Game released his debut album The Documentary on Aftermath/G-Unit/Interscope records.

The Game was the first G-Unit representative from outside of NYC to be a part of the then-dominating roster consisting of Tony Yayo, Lloyd Banks, and its general, 50 Cent. The album was originally called “Nigga Witta Attitude Vol.1,” but Eazy-E’s wife, Tomica Woods-Wright, legally blocked that N.W.A. title reference from being used.

The album received commercial and critical success, reaching gold status in its first week and 2X platinum within the first two months. The singles that received the most acclaim were 50 Cent-assisted, which many felt was the primary reason for the project’s success. “Hate It Or Love It,” “Westside Story” and This Is How We Do” allowed The Game to see the same degree of fame as his Queens boss, but left many critics to wonder if this feat was capable with no guest appearances. The album’s production was a Hip-Hop producers’ Hall of Fame, with the likes of Kanye West. Scott Storch, Just Blaze, Timbaland, and of course Dr. Dre behind the boards. These key elements make The Documentary The Game’s most notable and successful album to date.

Salute to Dre, 50, Em, The Game, the entire G-Unit and everyone involved in one of the most pivotal Hip-Hop projects of the new millennium.

Scott Storch Vs. Mannie Fresh Instagram Live Beat Battle Has Twitter Split

Scott Storch Vs. Mannie Fresh

Source: Instagram / Instagram

The quarantine has inspired many of the musical greats to take to social media and stage friendly “battles” with one another, often with crowd-pleasing results and sometimes, not so much. The latest pair to engage in virtual fisticuffs, Scott Storch and Mannie Fresh, have concluded their battle with some on Twitter split on the end result.

Storch, who got his start in music as a keyboardist for The Roots before going on to produce for the likes of 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Beyoncé, Pink, and many others, was originally slated to lock in with T-Pain but a last-minute switcheroo took place thus bringing Mannie Fresh into the mix.

Fresh, who was a longtime in-house producer for New Orleans label Cash Money Records, hyped up the battle in a humorous way via social media, which was organized by Timbaland. The Wednesday night battle featured Storch essentially playing the many hits he’s contributed to with Fresh cleverly adding skits to his set while mostly relying on his original compositions.

The hype leading up to this battle was immense, even more so when T-Pain was initially announced then eventually replaced. As some thought,  Fresh would employ the tactic of playing many of his big hits crafted over the past two decades. Storch stuck with the same format and many folks crowned him the winner although it has to be noted that Fresh was behind the full productions of his offerings in the battle.

As it stands, the Twitter reaction to the Scott Storch and Mannie Fresh battle are still pouring in and we’ve collected some of the best below.

Swizz Beatz Announces T-Pain vs Lil Jon Battle on April 5

Swizz Beatz is continuing the series of artists going head to head with their 20 biggest hits. Next on the list, T-Pain and Lil Jon. The battle will take place on Instagram Live Saturday, April 4th.

Lil Jon was the voice of Atlanta in the early to mid-2000s dropping classic records like “Yeah” performed by Usher, “Snap Ya Fingaz” with E-40 and Sean Paul from the Youngbloodz and so much more (I don’t want to spoil the contest running of tracks.)

In the other corner, T-Pain was the face of auto-tune, a vocal effect still used today, dropping classics like “Buy U a Drank” and “Kiss Kiss” with Chris Brown.

On Wednesday, Scott Storch and Mannie Fresh went head to head in a producer battle that peaked at 202,000 people watching live with Swizz Beats keeping score.

Swizzy had Storch winning in a close battle, but the live comments told a different story with Scott Storch winning by a landslide. Mannie’s archives included tracks like “Back That Azz Up,” “Go DJ,” and Young Jeezy’s “And Then What.”

Scott Storch showed his versatility going from 50 Cent “Just a little bit” to Beyoncé’s “Naughty Girl” and threw in Chris Brown’s first hit “Run it” featuring Juelz Santana.

Scott Storch VS. T-Pain Was A Thing, Twitter Said T-Pizzle Doesn’t Stand A Chance

Premiere Of Columbia Pictures' "Bad Boys For Life" - Arrivals

Another day under coronavirus lockdown, another Instagram Live battle. Last night (Mar.31) Scott Storch and T-Pain announced they will be the latest to put their catalog of hits up against each other. After Twitter was left utterly confused, so Mannie Fresh stepped up.

We already experienced the “battle” between Sean Garrett and The-Dream, the well-organized situation between Ne-Yo and Jonhtá Austin, and now it was T-Pain and Scott Storch’s turn. The battle was initially put together by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, who got all of this started when they decided to beat battle out of the blue last month.

The battle was supposed to go down tonight, 8PM, and would consist of 20 rounds allowing each artist to flex their biggest hits. While everyone is looking forward to the battle, a lot of people are already declaring Scott Storch, the winner, and that is quite understandable because the man has hit records for days.

Should we count out T-Pain, though? If you checked social media, the consensus is the “Sprung” rapper/singer is in over his head here. Well, it would seem that the reactions forced a change, and now it’s going to be Mannie Fresh VS. Scott Storch and now that makes much more sense to music heads.

Still, the jokes the flew to the initial battle were quite hilarious. You can peep all of the reactions to the Scott Storch VS. T-Pain in the gallery below.

Nas Hits Studio W/ Fire Producer: “Incredible Reunion Working W/ The Legend Himself”

Nas

New York rapper Nas might just have some fire tunes in the stash. The hip-hop veteran recently linked up with hitmaker Scott Storch for a low-key studio session.

This past weekend, Scotty went to Instagram to share an in-studio shot alongside Nasir Jones.

Back in September, Mr. Jones spoke up on the impact his Lost Tapes LP had on rap culture and dished on a few of his fave songs.

Last summer, NBA superstar LeBron James turned up to NasThe Lost Tapes 2 album.

NasThe Lost Tapes 2 is jam-packed with major production.

Nas released his The Lost Tapes 2 album this week via Mass Appeal/Def Jam featuring songs that did not make the cut on his past few LPs. It features production from RZA, Pharrell, Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, No I.D., Pete Rock, Hit-Boy and more. The New York legend’s album is on pace to do 17-20k copies (5-7k pure sales) which is much lower than we anticipated. (Hip Hop-N-More)
