High-Key Details

Today marks the five-year anniversary of Bland’s death. She found herself behind bars in Texas after a traffic violation ultimately turned into a police brutality attack when the officer forced Sandra out of her vehicle.

Five years ago, 28-year-old Sandra Bland died by what was officially ruled a suicide, in a Waller County jail cell. Bland, a Black woman, was about to start a job at Prairie View A&M University. But on July 13, 2015, a Texas state trooper pulled her over for failing to use her turn signal. Such a stop would have normally resulted in a warning or a ticket. But it quickly escalated when trooper Brian Encinia, who is white, demanded Bland step out of the vehicle after she refused to put out a cigarette. She was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a public servant. Three days later, she was dead. The trooper was eventually fired for his actions during the traffic stop. (Texas Public Radio)

Wait, There’s More

Texas’ Rep. Garnet Coleman and Sen. John Whitmire have a new bill in the works set to put up more restrictions on law enforcement’s interactions with civilians. It will also aim to stop police brutality for good.

The 2021 bill will include measures such as ending the use of chokeholds, requiring a duty to intervene, investigating complaints of racial profiling, increasing standards of stop-and-search of vehicles and banning law enforcement from using minor traffic violations to look into other suspicions. Presidential Candidate Julian Castro Brings Up Tamir Rice and Eric Gardner in Democratic Debate

NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo hosted the first democratic debate with between ten of the candidates running for the top office of the nation, President of The United States. It aired on those channels, as well as livestreamed on NBCNews.com and on social media platforms. On this panel was New Jersey senator Cory Booker,  former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke, Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren, San Antonio mayor Julian Castro; New York City mayor Bill de Blasio; Maryland politician John Delaney; Congressman Tulsi Gabbard, Washington governor Jay Inslee, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar and Ohio congressman Tim Ryan.

When the question was asked regarding an Economic Justice agenda needed for Latino voters to stand with the democratic party, Castro’s answered spoke most passionately with his political alignment with the Black Lives Matter movement, Black and Brown trauma and domestic terrorism perpetrated against Black and Brown people.

He said, “I also think we have to recognize racial and social justice. I was in Charleston not to long ago and I remember that Dylan Roof went to the Mother Emmanuel AME Church and he murdered nine people who were worshiping, and then he was apprehended by police without incident. But what about Eric Gardner and Tamir Rice and Laquan McDonald and Sandra Bland and Pamela Turner and Antonio Arce.  I am proud that I am the only candidate so far that has put forth legislation that will reform our policing system in America that will insure that no matter what the color of your skin is you are treated the same (including Latinos who are mistreated too often by police).”

This came right after, Mayor Bill DeBlasio invoke the image of him raising a Black son who has had his own issues with police based on race.

This is not the first time that the Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary has spoken out about this.  Last week at the South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn Fish Fry in Columbia, Castro noted when talking about the aforementioned 2015 church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina and how gently Roof was treated, “What about Eric Gardner? And what about Stephon Clark?” Listing other Black Americans killed by police. “We’re going to be fearless to make sure this country works for everyone.”

The next debate will be held on Thursday on the same networks and will feature 10 more Democratic candidates, including prominent figures Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

Sandra Bland’s Cell Phone Footage of her 2015 Arrest Before her Death Surfaces

Sandra Bland‘s family is calling for a renewed investigation into her arrest and death after a 39-second video from her phone surfaced showing the state trooper aggressively threatening her with a stun gun.

The 28-year-old activist was taken into custody in Texas for a traffic violation and was found hanging in her cell three days later. Her death was ruled a suicide, however, the public believed it was a homicide. The fact that the police were aware of the existence of the cell phone footage and didn’t make it known to the public opens old wounds in the Sandra Bland case.

The video below was unearthed during a investigative report by Dallas television station WFAA that included interviews with Ms. Bland’s family and supporters, who accused officials of concealing vital information that can help their case.

The Texas Department of Public Safety claim the cellphone footage was referred to “multiple times” in the report, however, the only footage that public has seen is the footage from the dash cam.

“What the video shows is that Encinia had no reason to be in fear of his safety,” Cannon Lambert, who represented the family in a $1.9 million legal settlement, said in a telephone interview. “The video shows that he wasn’t in fear of his safety. You could see that it was a cellphone, He was looking right at it.”

Unreleased Footage Of Sandra Bland Recording 2015 Traffic Stop Surfaces [Video]

Newsworthy

The 2015 traffic stop and arrest of the late Sandra Bland continue to be shrouded in mystery. Thanks to previously unreleased footage, onlookers now have a glimpse of what Bland saw that day after a recording of her arrest she made went public.

WFAA exclusively reports:

The new video — released as part of a WFAA exclusive in partnership with the Investigative Network — fuels the Bland family’s suspicions that Texas officials withheld evidence in her controversial arrest and, later, her death.

Until now, the trooper’s dashcam footage was believed to be the only full recording of the July 2015 traffic stop, which ended in Bland’s arrest. The trooper claimed he feared for his safety during the stop.

The 39-second cellphone video shot by Bland remained in the hands of investigators until the Investigative Network obtained the video once the criminal investigation closed.

The family is demanding a criminal investigation be reopened as a result of this new footage as they too are just seeing it themselves. Bland’s sister was reported by WFAA as accusing the Waller County authorities of pulling wool over the public’s eyes.

“We also know they have an extremely, extremely good cover-up system,” Shante Needham said.

The new footage can be viewed below.
