G-Eazy and Juicy J were named in a recently filed lawsuit that alleges the pair ripped off the original work of two Memphis artists for the Bay Area star’s “No Limit” hit single from 2017. DJ Squeeky and Gaylon Love say they own the rights to the track sampled for “No Limit” with the pair specifically naming the Three Six Mafia group member in the matter.

As reported by TMZ, Squeeky and Love say their 1993 song “Lookin 4 Da Chewin” was used on the original drop for “No Limit” which also featured Cardi B and A$AP Rocky. The song has sold over 5 million copies according to the RIAA and a remix was also released featuring French Montana, Belly, and the aforementioned Juicy J.

The outlet says that Squeeky and Love are aiming their legal angst at G-Eazy as it was a single from his 2017 album The Beautiful and Damned, and at Juicy because as a Memphis native familiar with their work, he should have taken steps to break bread properly with the home team as told to TMZ by the lawyer for the plaintiffs. There’s also a possibility other people may be named in the lawsuit considering it’s one of the biggest songs in G-Eazy’s discography.

Other members of the Three Six Mafia have also been hit with recent lawsuits with Juicy J’s bandmate DJ Paul named in a new case along with Juicy J in separate matters. Hip-Hop Wired recently spoke with DJ Paul regarding his Trippie Redd collaboration “Death” and informed us that he cleared the sample, a Three Six Mafia track titled “HIt A Muthaf*cka,” back in 1997.

A soul singer from the ’60s is angling for a big payday after bringing a lawsuit against Virginia producer Timbaland for sampling one of his tracks for a pair of songs. Ernie Hines filed a $2 million lawsuit against Timbaland, who used the original recording to create songs for Jay-Z and Ginuwine separately.

The Blast reports:

81-year-old Ernie Hines filed a lawsuit, obtained by The Blast, against Jay-Z, Timbaland, Roc-A-Fella Records, Def Jam Recordings, Universal Music Group and Sony Music.

Hines, a soul musician from Jackson, Mississippi, says he’s the co-author and composer of the 1969 song, “Help Me,” which was sampled on both Jay-Z’s “Paper Chase” from the Hard Knock Life album, and Ginuwine’s 1999 song, “Toe 2 Toe.”

Timbaland produced both tracks, and the document notes that “Toe 2 Toe” has sold over “2 million copies.”

Hines’ attorney, Christopher Brown, writes that his client is a “senior citizen, does not listen to rap music and was unaware” that the songs contained his music and composition.

Thus far, it appears that Timbaland has not publicly responded to Hines’ lawsuit claims.

Nicki Minaj found herself in the crosshairs of singer and songwriter Tracy Chapman after an unreleased track was leaked to the public. Minaj has fired back at Chapman, saying that while she did use the sample, the song was never sold and thus she doesn’t have to pay up.

The Blast reports:

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Minaj is denying all allegations of wrongdoing in the case brought by Chapman claiming Nicki sampled her song “Baby Can I Hold You” on a track with Nas titled “Sorry.”

Minaj admits her team made several requests to Chapman to use her music and says those requests were denied. She also says she did record the song before getting permission.

In the court docs, Minaj says she did want to put “Sorry” on her album “Queen” but left it off due to not having clearance.

The outlet adds that Funkmaster Flex leaked the song to the public thus landing it on Chapman’s radar. The singer is seeking damages and an injunction against Minaj from using any of her original music.

Juice WRLD has a smash hit with his song “Lucid Dreams” which borrows musical elements from rocker Sting’s 1993 track “Shape Of My Heart.” It appears that Sting allegedly threatened legal action over the song despite giving his earlier blessings, but Juice WLRD isn’t too stressed.

In a series of now-deleted tweets, the track’s producer, Nick Mira, fired off some missives towards Sting, including a not-so-polite “F*ck You” stance.

“F*ck @OfficialSting and his WHOLE team,” Mira tweeted over the weekend. “After taking 85% of Lucid Dreams (for interpolating Shape of My Heart, NOT EVEN sampling) he threatened to take us to court for trying to get any %. Sting ALSO flexed stealing our money and said it put his grandkids through college.”

Juice WRLD responded via Twitter with, “Lost millions made millions…the song impacted to many ppl in a good way for me to be upset over it. There’s always more money to be made and I will make it so.”

Check out the song in question, “Lucid Dreams” from Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance project below.
