Rhymefest Drops New Project 'James & Nikki: A Conversation'

Grammy-winning hip-hop artist and humanitarian Rhymefest has unveiled his latest music project, “James & Nikki: A Conversation,” in honor of Black History Month. Developed in partnership with Golden State Entertainment (GSE), the project pays homage to the historic 1971 dialogue between literary giants James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni.

“James & Nikki: A Conversation” features six talented female hip-hop artists engaging in dialogue with Rhymefest, including Brittney Carter, Helixx C. Armageddon, Teefa, Freddie Old Soul, EP Da Hellcat, and C-Red. Drawing inspiration from Baldwin and Giovanni’s conversation, the project aims to spark meaningful discourse and celebrate the voices of Black women in hip-hop.

This release marks Rhymefest’s inaugural project since signing with GSE in 2022 under a multi-project deal. GSE, the music, entertainment, and content arm of the Golden State Warriors, is dedicated to producing original content that transcends traditional boundaries and shares compelling narratives rooted in sports and entertainment culture.

Two-time Grammy Award-winning hip-hop artist Rhymefest has unveiled “Creator,” a preview of his upcoming project, James & Nikki: A Conversation, slated for release on Feb. 9 in honor of Black History Month. Rhymefest, associated with Golden State Entertainment (GSE), the entertainment vertical under the Golden State Warriors, joined the team in 2022 on a multi-project deal.

“James & Nikki: A Conversation, uses fertile soil of our past to seed current conversations for our future,” said Rhymefest.

“Creator” marks Rhymefest’s first release with GSE and sets the stage for James & Nikki: A Conversation. The project draws inspiration from the historic 1971 discussion between literary icons James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni. Featuring clips from the original conversation, the initiative will showcase six women hip-hop artists engaging in dialogues with Rhymefest.

As an accomplished songwriter, Rhymefest earned a Grammy for co-writing “Jesus Walks” in 2005 and received nominations for “New Slaves” in 2013. He co-wrote the Oscar-winning song “Glory” and has been recognized for multiple hit singles, including “Brand New” in 2006. Rhymefest, who made his film debut in The Public and featured prominently in the Kanye West documentary Jeen-Yuhs, recently completed a Pritzker fellowship at the University of Chicago: Institute of Politics.

“Golden State Entertainment is committed to fostering collaborations with a diverse and passionate roster of artists, championing their culturally significant work,” said Golden State Entertainment Chief Business Officer, David Kelly. “Rhymefest is a great example of that vision: he’s a distinguished lyricist, activist, and teacher who has creatively reimagined an important moment in Black history for a modern audience.”

Rhymefest will perform at Thrive City’s Black History Month celebration on Feb. 19 and be honored as the Impact Warrior during the Golden State Warriors’ game against the Charlotte Hornets on Feb. 23, recognizing his community contributions.

Rule #4080: Common Snubbed Rhymefest After Grammy Win For ‘Glory’?

'The Public' New York Premiere

Entertainment can be a tricky business as not everyone you work with is your friend. Rhymefest was reminded of this reality yet again.

As spotted on HipHopDX, the Chicago MC is on a campaign run to promote his upcoming film The Public. During an interview with the Associated Press, he spoke about co-writing the song “Glory” for the hit film Selma. The stand out soundtrack selection garnered him and Common a Grammy Award. But that was back in 2014 and apparently, things have gone between thinned out between the two.

“Of course not. That’s Hollywood. No… Other people are protecting their interests. I get it, but if they only knew. If you only knew how much love could grow if you give me a little authenticity? But that’s fine. I’m doing films. I’ll see you in a minute. Who knows what the universe has in store” he rationalized.

But to hear him tell it Fest holds no grudges against Lonnie. “It’s not that we don’t speak because anybody’s angry at anybody, it’s just, after that, it was just, you know, you just don’t speak. I love Common. I respect him as an artist. I think he’s dope as hell. In fact, he’s one of my heroes.”

Regardless of the distance between Che is grateful for the overall experience. “You can’t go around feeling cheated or you can’t move forward. So, I don’t feel cheated. Also, it was an opportunity for me. I did get a Grammy. I did get a Soul Train Award. I did get a plaque. I was part of a great thing that happened, and guess what? More than me, the world needed ‘Glory.’”

Most recently Rhymefest made up with longtime collaborator Kanye West.

The Public will be in theaters starting today; it stars Emilio Estevez, Alec Baldwin, and Christian Slater. You can find the trailer below.

Kanye West Squashes Beef With Rhymefest, On ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ [Video]

Kanye West 28th Birthday Party Presented by Urban Concepts

Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty

Watching anything Keeping Up With The Kardashians goes against our way of Hip-Hop life, but here we are. Let the record show it’s only because Kanye West is seen discussing his feud with former collaborator and Chicago MC Rhymefest in a new trailer.

The video starts off with Yeezy saying he only did the interview because of The Incredibles and how he relates to them, including how the wife has a big butt. Seriously.

Anyway, we only came here for the Rhymefest chatter, who West infamously fell out with, since Yeezy is barely in the trailer. In the clip, Yeezy explains how someone in his circle pissed off Rhymefest, who then lashed out online. Kim Kardashian clapped back, and it all went to hell after that.

But it seems like the Yeezy and Fest after back on good terms with the former saying “We are love” at the conclusion of the clip.

The Rhymefest discussion, which includes a sit down with the rapper and activist, starts at 1:53, already cued up below. It must be noted that the meeting went down in Kim’s office, who plays somewhat salty (because she’s protective of Yeezy) moderator.

Kanye West Admits To Using Ghostwriters

For those Yeezy fans who may have thought different, it’s true. Kanye West does NOT write all of his rhymes.

Among all of the other controversial tweets that Ye sent out this week, one that may have slipped under the radar was the one where the Chi-Town emcee admitted that “Violent Crimes” on this year’s Ye album was written by one of his trusty penmen.

Even though it’s a well known fact that West employed RhymeFest to write his epic “Jesus Walks” hit ,but now Yandhi has no problem admitting it.

With CyHi(CyHi da Prynce), Cons(Consequence) and Pardi(Pardison Fontaine) scribing Kanye’s darts, he has a lot more time on his hands to piss people off in the political arena with his pro-MAGA views in alliance with President Trump.
