Today in Hip Hop History: Slick Rick Dropped His Last Album ‘The Art of Storytelling’ 24 Years Ago

slick rick

On this day in Hip Hop history, Slick Rick released his final studio LP, The Art of Storytelling.

Produced mainly by DJ Clark Kent and Kid Capri, this album featured guest verses from Redman, Rev Run, Outkast, Nas, Raekwon, and Snoop Dogg.

Critically the album has been hailed as the only proper sequel to his breakthrough debut album, The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick. Due to continuous run-ins with the law, the public could never fully experience Slick Rick as an artist. For the same reason, the world will never know what his outstanding ability and outspoken persona could have done for Hip Hop culture. What is apparent is that when the master storyteller has the time, he can pen and deliver a masterpiece.

The Art of Storytelling was Slick Rick’s most commercially successful album, peaking at #8 on the Billboard 200 chart and #1 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop charts. The album even went gold during its first week of sales. True to the title, the album contains narratives that could only be crafted by the pen that scribed the famous “Children’s Story.” And although he has not strayed away from his signature rhetoric, The Art of Storytelling shows improvement and Slick Rick’s ability to stay relevant as far as his style blending with the famous sound of the time. This album deserves all accolades and is a proper farewell to Slick Rick as an album rapper.

large run dmc

In its 50th year, Hip-Hop will soon see the last-ever performance by Run-DMC. According to Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, in conversation with Rock The Bells, the group will deliver their last-ever performance at Madison Square Garden this Spring.

“Run-DMC is over,” DMC said. “The only way Run-DMC gets back together is if The Beatles get back together. Can that happen?”

He added, “The final show that we are ever going to do is going to be at Madison Square Garden in April.”

The concert will be featured in the last episode of a forthcoming Run-DMC documentary, citing, “we done did what we could do.”

Rev Run Says Kobe Bryant and Run-D.M.C. recorded a Song Together

Many stories have been told about the life of Kobe Bryant over the past week, but not many have come from his rap days. Rev Run now reveals The Black Mamba had once recorded a song with Run-D.M.C.

To give you an idea of when this went down, Kobe was still an adidas athlete and he would meet the iconic rap group and the magic would happen.

“We met at the studio [in L.A.], because Kobe at the time had a relationship with Adidas, and we had that big record, ‘My Adidas.’ So we hung out all night and discussed options of how we should make the record. He liked to rap, we knew he was a good basketball player that wanted to rap with us, and we had a great night, took pictures,” Rev said to Yahoo Entertainment. “He was excited to meet us, and we were excited to meet him. It was just beautiful hanging with Kobe — and starting to record a record that we never finished.”

Unfortunately, we will never hear the song because Rev Run has no clue where it was. “Maybe it’s in the archives of some studio, or a demo that we made in our house that we was going to give to them to download their vocals,” Run added.

If you are a holder of that track, please show yourself.

Rev Run Says He Was Zooted When He Wrote “Christmas In Hollis”

The inspiration for a song can happen at any time, but few would expect that one of Hip-Hop’s favorite Christmas-related jams was written while the author was on drugs. Rev. Run of Run-DMC says that while he was high and eating breakfast, he came up with the lyrics for “Christmas In Hollis.”

Page Six reports:

He told us of the 30-year-old track, “I was in my new house that I just purchased in Hollis [Queens]. I was by myself. And I look down at my plate — it was eggs, jelly and toast. I just finished my breakfast and I wrote the rap.”

“‘It was December 24th on Hollis Ave in the dark/ When I see a man chilling with his dog in the park/I approached very slowly with my heart full of fear/ Looked at his dog, oh my god, an ill reindeer.’”

Added Rev Run, “I look down [at the lyrics] and I thought, ‘Wow this is crazy.’ I wrote that in like one minute.”

The tune appeared in 1987 on “A Very Special Christmas,” the charity compilation album benefiting the Special Olympics with tracks by Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Whitney Houston and others.

Run is currently promoting StubHub’s holiday-themed page, in conjunction with West Coast MC Murs. Learn more here.
