Buju Banton Says Dancehall/Reggae Doesn’t Have Mainstream Appeal Because the Artists Don’t ‘Lie’

Buju Banton made an appearance on the inaugural episode of Apple Music’s Shabbaaaaa Sound Radio with Drewbyrd, Sean G, and Shacia Payne.

Although DJ Kool Herc took elements of Reggae and incorporated into Hip Hop, the mother-genre doesn’t get mainstream recognition and the Dancehall icon says it’s because of the authenticity.

“We don’t want to tell the people a lie. We have to tell the people the truth, and that is reggae music,” Buju said at the interview’s 6:49 minute mark. “That’s why we don’t get the mainstream appeal and the mainstream behind us, because our music is a music aimed at uplifting something inside of you, not outside of you. Realize what even [Bob Marley] was telling them, what [Peter Tosh] was telling them.”

Buju went on to say mainstream gatekeepers have purposely kept the spiritual disconnection between the genres. “And they have taken away the connection that we have to the higher power,” he continued. “They’re trying to block it. We have to reconnect. And when we reconnect, everything becomes seamless.”

Buju Banton hasn’t made a mainstream breakthrough since his release from prison, but other artists have been gravitating towards him. He made an appearance on DVSN’s A Muse in Her Feelings on a record called, “A Dangerous City” featuring Ty Dolla Sign. He also joined forces with Tory Lanez for the “Trust” remix.

Angela Lansbury Hilariously Reacts To Hearing Reggae Song “Murder She Wrote” For 1st Time, Ever

Angela Landsbury Reacts To Hearing Reggae Song "Murder She Wrote"

Angela Lansbury, star of the iconic CBS show Murder She Wrote might have become a reggae fan. The legendary actress heard Chaka Demus and Pliers’ classic reggae track of the same name, for the first time, and her reaction was priceless.

Lansbury stopped by the CBC radio show where she heard “Murder She Wrote”—and we must stress this—for the first time despite its initial release in 1992. She didn’t know exactly who made the song, but she totally loved it. After CBC’s host Tom Power played Landsbury the record, he asked her if she has “heard the record before?” She replied no and thought the idea of a song being named “Murder She Wrote” was “very funny.”

When the 93-year-old actress asked who are they? Power explained, “they’re sort of like legends in reggae music.” Lansbury excitedly responded that she was “thrilled to be part of Reggae. Of course.” Power followed that up with “you made it in, and you didn’t even know it.” Lansbury adorable closed the segment stating, “Wow, that’s great!”

It looks like Angela will be updating her playlist with some Reggae ASAP. You can hear her reaction in the Instagram clip below.

Buju Banton Removes Homophobic Song From His Discography

Iconic reggae Buju Banton was released from jail after serving seven years of a 10-year prison sentence. While his music is loved by the many, Banton gained a reputation for having homophobic lyrics throughout his catalog. Addressing this in at least one instance, Banton decided to ban one of his songs. It’s being reported by UrbanIslandz.com that his 1992 dancehall hit, “Boom Bye Bye,” will be excluded from his discography. The song has been removed from streaming services such as Tidal, Apple Music and Spotify.

While Banton hasn’t performed the song since 2007, the anti-LGBT themes and sentiment song has proved to be controversial because of the language. On the track, he raps “boom bye, bye inna batty bwoy head,” which translates to putting a bullet through a gay man’s head. The song has been criticized for its apparent advocacy of targeting a specific group.

“In recent days there has been a great deal of press coverage about the song ‘Boom Bye Bye’ from my past which I long ago stopped performing and removed from any platform that I control or have influence over,” Banton told the Caribbean-focused news outlet.

“I recognize that the song has caused much pain to listeners, as well as to my fans, my family and myself. After all the adversity we’ve been through I am determined to put this song in the past and continue moving forward as an artist and as a man,” he continued. “I affirm once and for all that everyone has the right to live as they so choose. In the words of the great Dennis Brown, ‘Love and hate can never be friends.’ I welcome everyone to my shows in a spirit of peace and love. Please come join me in that same spirit.”

The song was written when Banton was a teen about a pedophile who had molested a young boy.

According to IamJamaican, the Grammy Award-winning artist is scheduled for release on December 8, 2018. Banton’s 10-year prison sentence was reduced by two months in January 2016. Florida’s US Attorney Office announced an agreement to waive the appeals of his prior convictions. In 2011, the “Boom Bye Bye” artist was convicted on cocaine distribution and conspiracy charges. In exchange for waiving the appeals, the prosecutors agreed to drop a firearms charge against Banton. The Jamaican artist was initially scheduled to be released in February 2019. He was arrested in 2009 and convicted in 2011.

Back in 2017, Sean Paul posted a video after visiting Banton.

The reggae legend’s team recently announced the “Long Walk To Freedom” world tour for Summer 2019. This news alone began to stir up a lot of buzz. Now that Banton’s release is less than one month away, Jamaica can rejoice once the Bad Mon comes home. According to Buju’s close friend and former manager, Donovan Germain, his first show will be in Jamaica. Although no dates have yet to be announced, fans everywhere have anticipated the long-awaited return of Buju Banton. Therefore, the celebration will be massive.
