Deuce Ellis – “RZA’s Keyboard” Ft. Rome Streetz & Popa Wu

Buffalo born, Brooklyn raised MC/producer Deuce Ellis is about to drop his second offering of 2020. At the end of May he gave listeners “Camo Ellis,” a well-received instrumental EP that he co-produced with longtime friend Camoflauge Monk. However, what he’s serving up fans on Friday the 13th in November is his opus, “Midnight Ouroboros.” This 10-track LP features Deuce on production and mic duties with some assistance from some of the game’s most sought after artists. On the emcee tip, he invited along Rome Streetz, Estee Nack, Hus Kingpin, G4Jag, Napoleon Da Legend, Billie Essco, Ty Farris, Jae Skeese, and Lxve The Genius. While on the boards he collaborated with Camo Monk on three joints once again, and did one with another Buffalo beatmaker, CeeGee.

Now, to spark off this high profile affair Deuce is unleashing the lead single titled “RZA’s Keyboard” featuring Rome Streetz and Popa Wu (RIP). As the name suggests, the beat was concocted on RZA’s old keyboard, which was given to Deuce by his mentor Popa Wu. Deuce also recorded The Clan elder dropping mad knowledge, which he uses a snippet of on this special cut to tribute the late great.

Wu Tang Clan Advisor, OG Popa Wu Passes Away At Age 63

It has been confirmed through several reports that Freedum “Popa Wu” Allah passed away this morning in his home in Brooklyn, New York. He was 63 years old.

Popa Wu, who was most affectionately known as “Freedum” to his loved ones, was best known to the world as the Wu Tang Clan’s consigliere of righteousness, appearing on several Clan projects including “All That I Got Is You” featuring Mary J. Blige from Ghostface Killah’s Ironman album, Raekwon’s classic Only Built For Cuban Linx LP and opened up the WTC’s classic double CD Wu Tang Forever on “Wu-Revolution”. Given the name “Popa Wu” by Method Man, Freedum also appeared in the new Hulu series’ first episode of Wu Tang: An American Saga.

Being an older cousin to founding members RZA, GZA and the late ODB, Freedum was very instrumental to the structure of the Wu Tang Clan in its early developmental stages. The elder of the Cuffie crew aided in guiding the founders towards the teachings of the Five Percent Nation, a culture that Freedum adopted as a teenager in the mid 60s. These teachings are the principle aspect of the content of Wu Tang’s music.

Several Clan members and the Hip Hop community poured their love and condolences into social media posts showing their respect for the God.

As the news of Freedom “Popa Wu” Allah‘s passing continues to send shockwaves throughout the industry, many who knew and loved the wise spiritual guide of The Wu-Tang Clan. Taking to Twitter and Instagram, Popa Wu’s loved ones are joined in mourning after losing one of the most memorable voices of the culture.

Earlier, we reported on the news that Popa Wu transitioned with details scant at the time. Since our published work from earlier Monday (December 16), we’ve learned Popa Wu was 63 years of age and that there was an alternative spelling of his attribute (name) listed as “Freedum.”

U-God was among the first Wu-Tang Clan members to pay their respects for their fallen comrade, and other members such as GZA sharing a video clip of Popa Wu “building” (teaching Five Percent Nation lessons) in the Hulu series Wu-Tang: An American Saga. and Method Man reposted an older photo of the pair. Ghostface Killah, Cappadonna, and Raekwon also gave tribute on their respective social media pages.

Others such as R.A. The Rugged Man, Five Steez, and Justis Hype also shared kind words for Popa Wu, and it was Hype who reminded many that Popa Wu was far more than just a Wu-Tang Clan affiliate. He also operated a record label out of Brooklyn, and he also was an adviser to many up and coming rappers and producers all hoping to soak up his wisdom and outlook on life.

A common refrain among those who met Popa Wu in passing is that he imparted the same bristling gems of advice to them as he did across several Wu-Tang Clan tracks. We’ve collected some of those responses in the gallery below.

Peace to the God Freedom “Popa Wu” Allah. Rest Powerfully.

Fans of the Wu-Tang Clan are gathered in mourning after news that Popa Wu, a common fixture on many of the Clan’s releases, has died. Popa Wu’s distinctive voice and his passionate Five Percent teachings were always a standout moment.

Also known as Freedom Allah, Popa Wu was a certified triple OG with knowledge of self. Most fans heard Popa Wu for the first time on Raekwon’s “North Star” bonus track from the Only Built For Cuban Linx in 1995, a moment that became a signature style for the true and living G-O-D.

Popa Wu also lent his jewels to tracks such as Ghostface Killah’s “Black Jesus” and “All That I Got Is You.” Popa Wu also released an album, Visions In The 10th Chamber, in 2000 featuring a number of Clan affiliates. He was also active on social media, most especially on Instagram.

TOMORROW! “Allah , Justice & The Five Percenters Square” Street Sign Unveiling In Harlem

Much anticipation has been brewing since last May when the campaign to co-name the northwest corner of 126th Street & Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. in Harlem as “Allah, Justice & The Five Percenters Square” began. This Saturday afternoon that vision finally comes to fruition when the unveiling ceremony is conducted at the very same location.

A number of prominent people are set to speak, which are primarily some founding members of the Five Percent Nation, including Rasul-Rafiq, Omala Earth, First Born ABG and others who were present from 1964 to 1969; the formative years of the Black cultural phenomenon known as Allah’s 5%. They’ll discuss Allah and Justice’s social influences regarding inner-city youth during that era.

Allah, who is the founder of the 5% Nation, and his “main man” Justice will have their physical family members present at the unveiling namely Kenya Smith, Clarence Smith Jr. & Elijah Howell, who is Old Man Justice’s son. They all will speak from the relatives’ perspective.

Urban music legends DJ Marley Marl, DJ Kool Herc, Popa Wu, Rakim Allah, Brand Nubian, dead prez, The Force MDs, TaharQa Aleem and several others are confirmed and will speak about the Five Percenters’ contributions to the Hip-Hop culture.

Also confirmed to attend are Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Mayor Lindsay aide Sid Davidoff and others.

After the actual unveiling of the sign, a reception will be conducted at Allah School In Mecca, located at 2122 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd., where more official history about the Nation will be discussed by other original Gods & Earths, as well as some highly influential Hip-Hop artists.

A segment of the program is devoted to some of the younger Five Percenters, who will be heavily influenced as they mature into adulthood. Afterwards, some of the elder Gods & Earths will receive commemorative rewards for their decades-long contributions.

“Allah and Justice’s influence is undeniable, it has effected every segment of society,”

contends Mal’akiy 17 Allah, a.k.a. KOS 5 Allah, who’s spearheading this campaign. “Our impact has been so profound that it’s still being felt globally more than five decades later.”

Preparations are being made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Allah The Father’s assassination, which will be recognized June 7th -9th @ the Allah School In Mecca during the Annual Science Fair And Educational Show & Prove.
