Today in Hip-Hop History: The Clipse’s Debut LP ‘Lord Willin’ Turns 20 Years Old!

Screen Shot 2022 08 21 at 8.18.34 PM

Two decades ago today, Terrence and Gene Thorton aka Pusha T and Malice put out Lord Willin’, The Clipse’s debut album that helped them solidify their spots within honorable mention of some of the best lyricists in the game.

Produced exclusively by the Neptunes on Pharrell Williams’ Star Trak imprint, the album displayed The Clipse’s microphone prowess, which helps the squares navigate through their cocaine-flooded street slang. Along with artists like Timbaland and Magoo, Missy Elliot, and Pharrell, The Clipse was an intricate part of establishing VA as one of the East Coast’s strongholds in Hip Hop, which made room for artists like Chris Brown and Wale to add on to the legacy.

Some of the most memorable gems from the Twin Thorton’s first album include “Cot Damn” featuring their Re-Up Gang affiliates Ab-Liva and Philly’s Roscoe P. Coldchain, “When The Last Time” with their Star Trak team members Kelis and Pharrell, and the infamous “Grindin’” with remixes featuring Noreaga, and another infamous duo, Lil Wayne and Birdman.

Salute to Pusha, No Malice, Pharrell, and the rest of the Star Trak team for pushing out this timeless classic!

Former Clipse Manager Claims 95% of Group’s Drug Lyrics Were Based on His Life

The Clipse aren’t the first rap group to rap about pushing weight, but they did it in an innovative way that changed the game forever.

Pusha-T has pretty much been rapping about the same content for the last two decades and has been criticized for not switching it up or living his raps.

The group’s former manager, Anthony “Geezy” Gonzalez, did an interview with Vlad TV and claimed that the Clipse was rapping about things that he did.

Geezy said they would turn their conversations into glorified bars and the rest is history.

“They never had to ask me about no idea off of what they have seen,” Gonzalez said. “But, I remember a couple of times it was a rap back in the day and me and him were sitting there talking and I said to him, I made a statement, for every car I got add nine O’s. It was me just talking in general when I said that and he looked at me but he ain’t say nothing. Then I heard him say it in a rhyme, ‘For every car I got add nine O’s.’ When I heard it, I was like, man I said that to him. He was good when it came to that type of stuff.”

Drake will definitely be happy to catch wind of this interview. Do you think Push will respond? Check out the full interview below:

Pusha-T Shuts Down Rumors of a Clipse Project in 2020

Sometimes you can’t believe everything you read on the Internet.

An Instagram account titled ReUp Gang Records gave Clipse fans hope that the duo will be joining forces again for the new decade.

A throwback photo of Pusha-T and his brother, No Malice, was uploaded to the IG account and the caption read: “NEW YEAR. NEW CLIPSE ALBUM. 2020 PYREX VISION.”

Fans began raving in the comments but Push quickly butted in shut that down. “Wishful thinking,” Push stated. “But see y’all at Something In The Water for sure.”

Pharrell is throwing his second annual Something in the Water festival at their hometown in Virginia so there’s a possibility that they may share a stage this year to perform some classics.

Clipse haven’t dropped an album since 2009’s Til The Casket Drops. The brothers briefly reunited for Kanye West’s Jesus is King album, and performed at a Sunday Service, but this doesn’t mean they’ll be getting back together to do a full-blown project.

Pusha-T has expressed his interest in getting back in the studio with his brother, but No Malice has dedicated his life to Christianity and quit Hip Hop. “I came to him and I was like, ‘Man, I got these ideas,’” he told CNN of the moment the Clipse was no more. “‘I got these beats I want you to check out.’ He was like, ‘I’m not doing another Clipse album right now.’ Wow. Now that was hard. That was hard.”

Pusha T Talks Clipse Reunion, “I’m Happier Than—I Can’t Even Express It!”

Pusha T was just as surprised as the fans were when his older twin brother No Malice agreed to reunite their legendary group for an appearance on Kanye West’s latest album, Jesus is King.

During an interview with Vulture, Pusha T states that he wasn’t so sure initially that the collaboration would happen, but after the process was over it showed them how much they truly missed rapping by each other’s side.

“I’m the younger brother, man. I mean, I’m happier than — I can’t even express it,” Pusha said. “I can’t speak for him, but I do think a lot of it had to do with feeling like he should be more present in everything that I had going on musically in the past couple of years,” he said. “There’s nothing like having a true warrior by your side.”

Despite the nostalgia, Pusha T feels that it was the subject matter of Kanye’s album that truly helped the two reunite and although it long overdue, King Push stated that it may not happen again.

“The whole theme of the Jesus Is King album totally speaks to where my brother is,” Pusha T continued. “Him and Kanye definitely bonded, probably way more than me and Ye bonded in the creation of this.”

Although Kanye is credited for the reunion, Yeezy revealed that it was No Malice who encouraged him to release a Gospel album during a visit on Ye’s Wyoming ranch five months ago.

“Everybody’s saying that’s the only one [album] that No Malice would rap on. It was just beautiful. They were out here [in Wyoming] working on the album just five months ago,” Kanye said during his interview with Zane Lowe Thursday, But Pusha T said that when he was told the subject matter, he almost backed out until No Malice decided to help.

“I remember sayin’ I wasn’t even gonna rap. I didn’t know how to rap for God,” Pusha T continued. “So I remember No Malice being like, “I’ma write you a rap for this. You gon’ rap on this. This is such a win for the kingdom.”

The collaboration was so well received that the duo performed their song, “Use This Gospel”, alongside Kenny G at this week’s Sunday Service in Los Angeles. The latest installment was held on Sunday (Oct. 27) at the legendary Forum.
