National Museum Of African American Music Celebrates One Year

National Museum Of African American Music

The National Museum of African American Music in Nashville has been open for just over a year and they’re celebrating. 

According to museum officials, there have been 110-thousand visitors from countries all over the world.  The goal is to highlight the contributions Black artists have made to music and culture.  Over the past year guests have been able to use their interactive technology to learn stories behind musical genres ranging from classical to jazz to Hip Hop.

“It has really been gratifying to see people are coming, and they are having a good time,” said Henry Beecher Hicks, III, President and CEO of NMAAM. “They are enjoying it. They are laughing, playing music, and learning something too.”

In the video below, Hicks, is thankful for the museums visitors, including many notable recording artists like Quincy Jones, Earth Wind & Fire, H.E.R., Bobby Brown, and more.

As we continue in Black History Month, the museum is offering free admission day today. 

On Friday a panel discussion called “Everybody vs. Racism” is scheduled to address the impact of racism. Including outlining the best practices to break down barriers and identify solutions to eradicate historical inequities.

National Museum of African American Music Hosts ‘Hip-Hop Scholars’ to Discuss the Genre’s Journey

The National Museum of African American Music is set to open in the summer of 2020 and will be the only museum dedicated to the music traditions and influence of African Americans throughout history.

To ensure Hip-Hop is represented adequately in the museum, NMAAM hosted “Hip-Hop Scholars,” bringing in key contributors and historians, industry executives and culture creators to discuss the state of Hip-Hop, its influence on global culture and how the museum plans to celebrate Hip-Hop when doors open.

The event was hosted by Datwon Thomas and Shaheem Reid and give a glimpse into NMAAM’s origin and a gallery of content, presented by NMAAM President, H. Beecher Hicks III, and Senior Curatorial Director, Dr. Dina Bennett. During the dinner, the discussion was shared on the state of Black music and the future of Hip-Hop in America and globally.

On October 23, the National Museum of African American Music gathered a collection of Hip-Hop historians/ academics, music industry executives and culture creators to facilitate dialogue about the state of hip hop, its influence on American and global culture and how the museum plans to celebrate it when doors officially open next summer.

NMAAM’s Senior Curator, Dr. Dina Bennett, discusses the museum’s plans for the Rap & Hip-Hop inspired gallery entitled “The Message”, named after the famous 1982 hit song by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
