The prestigious HBCU Morehouse College has canceled a basketball tournament for the DONDA Doves VS. The Skill Factory, after comments made by Ye previously known as Kanye West, were deemed anti-semitic.

DONDA Academy was set to have their first game against The Skill Factory hosted by Morehouse but the HBCU described the comments made by the “Jesus Walks” rapper as decisive and unproductive leading them to cancel hosting the students.

Ye has been under fire and lost multiple brand deals and revenue over his antisemitic statements. The school canceled with a statement on social media saying it doesn’t support the Academy founder’s comments leaving the kids without a location for their first game.

“Throughout its history, Morehouse College, perhaps more than any other institution, has stood for social discourse which advances equity and healing, particularly in areas involving race, culture, and socio-economic disparities,” the HBCU tweeted. “We therefore cannot condone, in perception or implication, the recent divisive and unproductive statements by Ye.”

According to reports Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown and Ye were both set to attend the game. Brown took to social media to express his frustration with the students’ game being canceled.

Michael Jordan Gifts $1 Million to Morehouse to Advance Journalism & Sports

Michael Jordan Donates $10 Million to Develop Two Health Clinics in His Hometown

Michael Jordan recently donated $1 million to Morehouse College. The NBA team owner’s Jordan brand and Nike’s donation will seek to advance and support journalism and sports at the HBCU. The school’s journalism program originally launched following a donation from Oscar-winning filmmaker, Spike Lee.

The HBCU’s VP for institutional advancement released a statement thanking His Airness for the donation.

“Morehouse is grateful to Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand for an investment in the education of talented men of color who will ensure there is equity, balance, and truth in the way sports stories are framed and the way the Black experience is contextualized within American history,” said Monique Dozier.

Jordan’s philanthropic efforts continue to be something he takes pride in. The NBA legend previously pledged $10 million dollars to several causes through his Black Community Commitment program. Now that pledge has begun to unfold. He previously donated to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Ida B. Wells Society, and more.

“Education is crucial for understanding the Black experience today,” says Jordan. “We want to help people understand the truth of our past and help tell the stories that will shape our future.”

Netflix CEO Pledges $120 Million to HBCUs and United Negro College Fund

Netflix CEO Pledges $120 Million to HBCUs and United Negro College Fund

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and his wife Patty Quillin pledged to donate $120 million to Spelman and Morehouse College, and the United Negro College Fund.

“There are many good places to donate, but the [historically Black colleges and universities] are 150 years old, incredibly resilient, producing an amazing number of Black graduates,” Hastings said during an interview with CNBC on Monday. “We want to help draw attention to the HBCUs, to them being part of the solution for America, and for black children to aspire to.”

The donation comes after the growing outrage for racial equality since the death of George Floyd. On top of that, Black communities have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. “The amount of tragedy really did get us to focus and say, ‘let’s do something now that will be supportive of these great institutions and give people some sense of hope,’” Hastings continued. “This moment is not the first time that racism has reared its, you know, terribly ugly head.”

Deval Patrick Cancels Morehouse College Campaign Stop After Only 2 People Showed Up

Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick was a late entry into the Democratic Party presidential race and is playing catch up as the elections are a year out. But his campaign hopes might be dashed early after a planned stop at Morehouse College was cancelled due to only two people showing up.

CNN reporter Annie Grayer is covering the 2020 elections for the outlet, sharing via her Twitter account the empty room where Patrick was slated to speak Wednesday night (November 20). Grayer wrote in the caption of the tweet showing the photo that, “Patrick cancelled the event when he arrived and learned that he would not have an audience.”

In stark contrast, Grayer was on the campus grounds of Morehouse Thursday to attend Sen. Bernie Sanders’ event at the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel that appeared to be well attended and organized to maximize Sanders’ visibility.

The organizers of the event did state that they announced the event on short notice, perhaps lending to the lack of attendees.

Oprah Winfrey is no stranger to philanthropic efforts having donated to several causes using her massive wealth in the past. In a surprise move, the media mogul gifted Morehouse College with a surprise $13 million donation, adding to the millions she gave to the institution 30 years ago.

As reported by Morehouse’s press team, Winfrey made the donation this past Monday to bolster the Oprah Winfrey Scholarship program. In 1989, the scholarship program was born with a $12 million donation, with the program putting nearly 600 students through college since its inception.

The $25 million endowment is the largest in Morehouse’s history and comes just as the school announced recent budget cuts. Of the many beneficiaries of the scholarship, Randall Woodfin, currently the mayor of Birmingham, Ala. and the youngest person to hold that role when he was elected in 2017 at 36.

Black Billionaire Pledges To Pay Off Student Loans For Morehouse College Graduating Class

On Sunday (May 19), the graduating class of Morehouse College got quite a surprise when billionaire investor Robert F. Smith spoke during the commencement and said he’s paying off their student loans. Smith, who is the richest Black person in America, yes, even richer than Oprah Winfrey, has pledged much of his significant wealth similarily in the past.

WXIA reports:

Graduation keynote speaker Robert F. Smith, philanthropist and investor, speaking to the graduating class of Morehouse men of 2019, proudly announced Sunday morning that he was going to eliminate all of their student loan debt.

“My family is going to create a grant to eliminate your student loans,” Smith said to the graduating seniors. “You great Morehouse men are bound only by the limits of your own conviction and creativity.”

A Morehouse official told 11Alive News the gift was worth about $40 million.

“When Dr. King said that the ‘arc of the moral universe bends toward justice,’ he wasn’t saying it bends on its own accord. It bends because we choose to put our shoulders into it together and push,” Smith said during the speech.

How amazing was that?

Billionaire Robert F. Smith Pledges to Pay Morehouse Graduates’ Student Loans

The 396 men who graduated from Morehouse College over the weekend have a lot to be happy about thanks to Robert F. Smith.

Smith, the billionaire investor who founded Vista Equity Partners and became the richest black man in America, announced that he’ll be paying off the student debt for the entire graduating class during his commencement speech. This is a great burden lifted off the shoulders of these young men, who can start their next chapter debt-free.

“This is my class, 2019,” he said, personally claiming the graduating seniors as his own. “And my family is making a grant to eliminate their student loans.”

It took a moment for the news to sink in, but the crowd, consisting mainly of Black men, erupted once everything completely processed. “We’re all in robes, hot, the sun was beaming on us,” said Ernest Holmes, who said he had about $10,000 in loans that his parents were going to tackle. “We’re holding our papers up, trying to block the sun out of our eyes. Everyone jumped up, cheered. People were crying. It was just the most amazing thing.”

“Let’s make sure every class has the same opportunity going forward, because we are enough to take care of our own community,” Smith said. “We are enough to ensure we have all of the opportunities of the American dream, and we will show it to each other through our actions and through our words and through our deeds.”

Robert F. Smith’s donation comes at a time where there are growing calls to tackle the mounting burden of student loan debt. A few presidential candidates have made debt cancellation a key component of their campaigns. Some states and institutions are moving to make college tuition-free.
