Kenya Barris On Vince Staples: “He’s Like A Hood Savant!”

Interscope Records and Kenya Barris’ Khalabo Ink Society Announce Khalabo Music Record Label

If Kenya Barris is involved, you know something special is at hand.

Barris is a well-respected writer, producer, director, and actor, best known for creating the ABC sitcom black-ish. The award-winning show went on to create two successful spinoffs, grown-ish and mixed-ish, with Barris making his acting debut in #BlackAF on Netflix.

Now, things come full circle as Barris works on yet another incredible show on Netflix, this time for Vince Staples on The Vince Staples Show. Premiering on February 15th, the new comedy series brings you into the life of Vince Staples, accompanying him on his many adventures. Whether it’s hanging with the homies, going to a theme park, or even moments of almost getting shot, there’s never a dull moment when it comes to Vince Staples.

The Source had the pleasure of chatting with Kenya Barris at the red carpet premiere and screening of The Vince Staples Show at Netflix Tudum Theater in Los Angeles, California.

What was the moment you fell in love w/ Hip-Hop?

I’ma say Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five was the first album that happened. But Jay Z was the person who pushed me over. [laughs]

Favorite Jay Z song?

The Reasonable Doubt album. The whole album, you can play it through.

What do you like about Vince Staples?

I was a big fan of Vince. My kids love him, I love him. He’s like a hood savant. He literally is. He comes in and nobody thinks like him. He says stuff that makes you feel like people have to hear what you have to say.

Vince is known to push boundaries. Was there anything that went too far or anything you had to cut?

Everything. [laughs] Everything. lt lived and died in the edit room. Vince pushed us as much as we could in every way.

Kenya Barris is entering a joint venture record label deal with Interscope Records for his Khalabo Ink Society.

The new partnership will bring Barris’ Khalabo Music Record Label into the Interscope family, expanding the efforts of the brand into music.

“At Interscope we are interested in teaming up with creators who move culture and Kenya has created a body of work that is virtually unparalleled in that regard,” said Steve Berman, Vice Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records. “We are thrilled that he has chosen to partner with us on the musical expression of his vision through his Khalabo Music label and are excited to collaborate with him and his team to introduce new artists and soundtrack projects to the world.”

Kenya Barris Files Restraining Order Against His Sister Fearing She’s Going To Harm His Children

Kenya Barris Files Restraining Order Against His Sister Fearing She's Going To Harm His Children

Kenya Barris filed a temporary restraining order against his sister out of fear that she might retaliate against his kids after multiple alleged failed attempts to piggyback off his success.

The Black-ish creator documented years of alleged instances in which Colette “piggybacked on his name and their familial relationship to hook herself up with opportunities in Hollywood.” Hollywood executives felt pressured to fulfill her demands because of pending projects he has with them.

Kenya says Colette wrote him a legal letter demanding him to give her $4 million to bring her 2016 novel, Claretta Street, to the big screen.

The Girls Trip writer also claims that she demanded that he financially aids her and her extended family.

Kenya Barris is “asking a judge to enforce a court-ordered shield of protection so she has to stay away from him and his family and cease communication.”

Kenya Barris and Pharrell in Talks With Netflix to Make A Feature-Length Musical About Juneteenth

Pharrell Williams & Kenya Barris Collab On Juneteenth Musical

As more companies are beginning to recognize Juneteenth, Netflix is reportedly in talks with Kenya Barris and Pharrell Williams about making a feature-length musical about Juneteenth.

According to Deadline, the streaming company, Barris and Williams are in the early stages of working up a plan for the project, and it will be separate from the live musical they announced back in 2018.

Williams is set to produce the project with his partner Mimi Valdes with Barris who will produce the project through his production company Khalabo Ink Society.

News of this comes after Pharrell announced that his home state of Virginia will recognize Juneteenth as a paid state holiday. In his speech, Williams stated how Virginia is the location where enslaved Africans first arrived when they were stolen from their homeland 400 years ago.

Virginia is the second state, next to Texas, to officially recognize Juneteenth as a paid holiday. New York City mayor, Bill de Blasio recently stated that the city of New York will recognize Juneteenth as a paid holiday beginning in 2021.

Kid Cudi Preps For a New Album & Netflix Animated Series Both Named ‘Entergalactic’

The acting bug has a firm grip on Kid Cudi, and it doesn’t seem like it’ll be going away anytime soon. Not only has the Cleveland-bred rap star announced that a new album is on the way, he’s also already given the project a name and confirmed that a companion TV show in partnership with Netflix will also be part of the LP rollout.

Entergalactic is the title for both the upcoming album and the show, which is being described as an “adult animated series.” The latter will see Cudi working alongside Kenya Barris (Black-ish), who will serve as one of the series’ executive producers. Also in the EP role will be Ian Edelman, who worked with Cudi on HBO’s cult classic How to Make It in America, and the Demon Slayin’ MC himself will write, executive produce and of course star as the main character.

As The Hollywood Reporter describes it, Entergalactic will showcase music from the new album of the same name, and the plot focuses on a young man (more than likely played by Kid Cudi) on his journey to discover love. This will be the third acting role so far on Mr. Mescudi’s plate, following the Bill & Ted: Face the Music “threequel” that was announced last month and a return to HBO for a Luca Guadagnino-led series titled We Are Who We Are. Let’s go, future EGOT!

Entergalactic‘, the new album and Netflix series by Kid Cudi, are both expected to debut in 2020. Oh, and in case you were wondering:
