Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand Announces 2023 Community Grant Application

Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand Announces 2023 Community Grant Application

In order to give grassroots non-profit organizations new opportunities to make an impact where it matters most in their communities and cities, Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand have opened their third application cycle for Community Grants as part of a joint, 10-year, $100M commitment to the Black community.

The BCC Community Grant commitment is concentrated on funding and supporting groups and people working to ensure racial equality, social justice, and wider access to opportunities for education. Each Black Community Commitment (BCC) grantee organization will be chosen based on how well it aligns with one of the following four major pillars: Economic Justice, Education, Narrative Change, and Social Justice.

“By continuing to deliver on our commitment to the Black community, we can challenge the legacy of racism across this country,” said Jordan. “Through our Community Grants program, we’re focused on identifying and uplifting organizations that are committed to making real change at the local level.”

In order to encourage a wide range of community organizations to apply for these contributions, eligibility requirements were purposefully made straightforward. Application requirements include:

  • Be a U.S.-based non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status that has been established in 2019 or prior
  • Have an annual operating budget between $100,000 to $3 million
  • Organizations must have a mission that aligns with at least one of our four key pillars: Economic Justice, Education, Narrative Change, and Social Justice

The core of Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand’s 10-year, $100 million Black Community Commitment is leading significant change that has a direct influence on the battle against systemic racism. Since the BCC’s announcement in June 2020, we have concentrated on two things: action and impact.

“We are committed to supporting the Black community and deepening our connections,” said Craig Williams, President of Jordan Brand. “We want to advance the work of these incredible grassroots organizations that treat their communities like family. I’m proud that we have another opportunity to welcome them into our own Jordan Family.”

Michael Jordan Gifts $1 Million to Morehouse to Advance Journalism & Sports

Michael Jordan Donates $10 Million to Develop Two Health Clinics in His Hometown

Michael Jordan recently donated $1 million to Morehouse College. The NBA team owner’s Jordan brand and Nike’s donation will seek to advance and support journalism and sports at the HBCU. The school’s journalism program originally launched following a donation from Oscar-winning filmmaker, Spike Lee.

The HBCU’s VP for institutional advancement released a statement thanking His Airness for the donation.

“Morehouse is grateful to Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand for an investment in the education of talented men of color who will ensure there is equity, balance, and truth in the way sports stories are framed and the way the Black experience is contextualized within American history,” said Monique Dozier.

Jordan’s philanthropic efforts continue to be something he takes pride in. The NBA legend previously pledged $10 million dollars to several causes through his Black Community Commitment program. Now that pledge has begun to unfold. He previously donated to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Ida B. Wells Society, and more.

“Education is crucial for understanding the Black experience today,” says Jordan. “We want to help people understand the truth of our past and help tell the stories that will shape our future.”

Michael Jordan, Jordan Brand Pledge to Donate Millions to Groups Fighting Voter Suppression

Michael Jordan, Jordan Brand Pledge to Donate Millions to Groups Fighting Voter Suppression

Michael Jordan and his Jordan Brand made a commitment to contribute to the fight for social justice, and they’re donating millions to combat voter suppression in their latest initiative.

The Nike-owned brand announced their $2.5 million donation to three organizations to “support reformative practices that drive real change in the Black community.”

“There is a long history of oppression against Black Americans that holds us back from full participation in American society. We understand that one of the main ways we can change systemic racism is at the polls,” Jordan said in a statement announcing the donation. “We know it will take time for us to create the change we want to see, but we are working quickly to take action for the Black community’s voice to be heard.”

$1 million each were awarded to NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Formerly Incarcerated & Convicted People and Families Movement, meanwhile, Black Voters Matter received $500,000.

In June, MJ and his brand announced their 10-year plan to donate $100 million to directly impact the fight against systematic oppression and racism.

“The $100 million commitment was just the start. We are moving from commitment to action. Our initial partners can directly impact the social and political well-being of the Black community,” Jordan Brand President, Craig Williams said in a statement. “We will have a disciplined focus on social justice, economic justice and education, as the most effective ways for us to eliminate the systemic racism that remains in society.”

Michael Jordan’s Jordan Brand Pledges $100 Million Towards Racial Equality

Michael Jordan's Jordan Brand Pledges $100 Million Towards Racial Equality

Michael Jordan’s Jordan Brand will donate $100 million over the next 10 years “to organizations dedicated to ensuring racial equality, social justice, and greater access to education.”

In a joint statement made on Twitter, the basketball legend and the company stated “The Jordan Brand is us, the Black Community. Until the ingrained racism that allows our country’s institutions to fail is completely eradicated, we will remain committed to protecting and improving the lives of Black people.”

This generous donation comes about a week after the death of George Floyd in Minnesota. Floyd was murdered on May 25th after video footage went viral on social media showing Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin with his knee on Floyd’s neck while he was unarmed and handcuffed, along with three other officers standing by watching while crying out “I can’t breathe.”

The money will fund the Jordan Wings Program, which provides educational and mentorship opportunities and scholarships for young Black children who face “the obstacles of systemic racism.”

MJ and the sneaker company also pledged to each provide $50 million towards the $100 million donations, according to sports reporter Matthew Kish, in addition to the $40 million Nike pledged.

In a personal statement made by Michael Jordan on May 31st, he stated “I am deeply saddened, truly, pained and plain angry. I see and feel everyone’s pain, outrage and frustration. I stand with those who are calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of color in our country.”

“Everyone one of us needs to be part of the solution, and we must work together to ensure justice for all.”

Teyana Taylor stays leveling up. The Harlem singer has linked up with Jordan Brand to headline its new Flight Utility apparel campaign.

The capsule collection is inspired by Jordan Brand’s first apparel line and looks to the “future in fearless style” as inspiration. The main item in the collection is a Flight Suit that is complemented by a bomber jacker, utility pant, a hoodie and body suit.

While Taylor gets ogled for her insanely slim frame, the collection is designed to fit a wide range of body types and will also be available in plus sizing.

“Our passionate female audience is asking us for more, and this capsule collection celebrates a higher standard, a competitive spirit and fearless mindset for anyone who has the confidence to fly higher and break boundaries,” says Andrea Perez, GM of Jordan Women’s via a statement. “Jordan Women’s grew triple digits last fiscal year and there is strong excitement from our consumers and key accounts for us to keep reaching new audiences through our Women’s footwear and apparel.”

Coinciding with the collection’s drop is a new colorway of the women’s Jordan Max 200 XX and a women’s ’98 Air Jordan OG. The latter took aesthetic cues from the Air Jordan XIII and had dudes trying to squeeze their feet into the sneakers. Both shoes are available at Jordan.com right now.

The Jordan Women’s Flight Utility Apparel capsule will be available on February 1 at select retail stores and will be available on February 14 on Jordan.com. That’s Valentine’s Day, so get your chips up so your significant other doesn’t give you the side eye.

Check out photos of the collection in the gallery.
